I think its fairly accurate. In high school, I took a psychiatry class in which we where given a similar IQ test. Even though it was only 30-40 questions, our teacher swore it was a very accurate test....

Before their left turn, they should be 12 miles apart...but I have no idea what the distance would be after going 8 more miles in another direction. I think I guessed 26.

part of the test is how you answer the questions, there are few "right and wrong" answers more like if you answer one question this way it will make the other question more or less important.... oh and 70 is about as low as you can go with a test like that one much lower than 80 is quite retarded

Two cars start off at the same point on a straight highway facing opposite directions. Each car drives for 6 miles, takes a left turn and drives for 8 miles. How far apart are the two cars?

a. 2 miles
b. 11 miles
c. 14 miles
d. 20 miles
e. 26 miles

Math was my weakest subject ... I said two subtracting 8 from 6. That's because I read the question wrong. Now I'm thinking it would be 14 ...

They went 6 miles in opposite directions and then turned left for 8 miles. The 8 miles would still be in opposite directions. 8+6 = 14

That's actually not quite right anyway. He's off by a factor of 2.

It's actually (6+6)^2 + (8+8)^2 = d^2

So we get 144+256=d^2

which is d= (400)^(1/2)

so d=20 miles.

You could also just know that there are 3/4/5 triples, and that goes for all multiples of 3, 4, or 5. So knowing that we have 12 and 16, which are multiples of 3 and 4 and comprise 2 adjacent sides of a right triangle, we can multiply 5 by 4 and get 20 for the hypotenuse.
