I'm going to have to pick up the podcast for the O&A segment. I really wish they'd end up on XM. I think I'm going to have to pretend to be sick on Friday so I can listen to their last show. Sad day

I think it's gonna be another emotional one like the 1 or 2 hours Don did after Freda died. It's sad to lose a show that did real radio, even if it was decent at best.

That Freda show was brutal to listen to. I don't know how he kept it together. There's no way I could have listened to that show at work like I usually do. Sitting at my desk with tears in my eyes.
I was really hoping for one more absinthe show like they promised. Maybe they'll crack a bottle in the last couple of breaks.

They were one of the first talk shows I listened to when they were syndicated here. I have to admit it is sad that it is over. But I do wish Don the best.

I heard them in the hick town I lived in during the early 90s. And they were the best radio I ever heard at that time. That's hard to say now but true then. And I haven't heard them since the mid 90s, either.

This is the link to the segment w/ O&A. Fezzie opens the segment flirting with Buzz Burbank. Very funny segment. It would certainly be nice to hear that group of shows on XM. O&A, R&F, and D&M. I've got an absinthe show with Fez joining in on the festivities if anyone wants me to upload it. It's very funny.
Edit: The link above plays directly in the thread. If you want to download it, go here (http://www.wjfk.com/pages/1465722.php) and get segment 7 from 4/9/08. Click the middle button

Don and Mike were the first show that introduced me to the idea that radio was more then just a way of listening to music... they taught me about what real life (outside the boundaries of a repressive state like Iowa) was like, what good comedy was, and what the big ol' bad ol' world could do to an innocent person.
They helped intoduce me to Hoo-Hoo (who (by that time) was way past his prime), they started the rumor about O&A coming to WNEW back when they got fired for the Mayor's prank (hell, I still think they'd be friends if it weren't for Jeremy "The Gay Gerbil" Coleman pitting the shows against each other), and they even intro'd me to Ron & Fez (who I didn't understand at first but grew to enjoy).
Friday will be a sad day for me... another radio legend retires into the ether... hopefully he finds the peace he wants in his life (Lord knows he deserves it... the personal _HELL_ from not only the death of his wife Freda, but that of his biological father and his father-in-law (who he said was his true real father) he's gone thru is even then I could survive.)
Like him or hate him... Don has helped shape talk radio into what it is today. If it weren't for him and others paving the way, we wouldn't enjoy the type of radio we get on a daily basis.
Yeah, so I'm a bit emotional... i'm a D&M faggot fan, sue me.

What became of his son Bart? He was a kid last I heard, must be in his mid 20s now.

Don & Mike introduced me to listening to ONA. Even though some people won't admit it the D&M show and O&A were very similar.
O&A just took the humor to a higher, and more honest level.
IMO I bet if D&M had the chance before Freda passed, before 911 happened, and before the S4S and Janet Jackson to go uncensored we would have seen radio rivaling O&A.
I think after each of these incidents D&M chose to travel the path less risky. IMO this is what led their show to become stale and basically hacky.
I was a huge fan back in the early to late 90's. Some of their Las Vegas Style live shows were fucking outrageous. And the bits they did back in the day still hold up today. Don could rip apart an asshole caller, and he didn't take the easy way out like Hoo Hoo and the rest by hanging up on them. The only other radio people I have seen do this are O&A of course.
Good luck D&M. Even though I had outgrown your show I have great memories of it and I will be listening friday to your last show.

Wait... the D&M show is over? What happened? Did Don run over another one of his dogs?

I have never listened to radio for music. It's always been about talk shows for me. The 2000/2001 WNEW lineup - despite its horrendous ratings outside of O&A - as some of the most entertaining radio I have ever listened to.
SportsGuys 5-9
Radio Chick 9-12
RonAndFez.Com 12-3
Gregg 'n' Tony 3-7
Don and Mike 7-11

I listened to D&M in 1993-94, when I was going to college in Reno, and they were the best thing on the radio up there. They really helped me through some hard times back then. Ten years later, they were pretty bad — Rob calling out inanities off-mike, Mike doing easy, irrelevant celebrity impressions, WAYYYYY too much Freda (RIP), and as many days off as Hoo Hoo.
That said, I really do wish Don all the best after he calls it quits. I hope he finds happiness. But I wouldn't be surprised if he returns to the airwaves.

I agree. That was a great lineup, and I rarely changed my dial. They used to juggle D&M and R&F around too as I remember. I remember R&F killing in the evenings, and struggling a bit at lunchtime because their style needed the listener interaction.
I haven't listened to D&M much since those days, but I have a lot of respect for them. It takes balls to go on the air after his wife died and talk about it. That's a a brutal honesty that few in entertainment have these days.
