Asking this question. Which wars would you (or have you) be willing up to join up and fight in? No need to fear a draft, it's your own personal choice. And I'm not including piddly-wars like the Spanish-America War.

For sure the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Probably WWII, but other than that I'm not sure of any that I'd actually enlist for.

What no Race War choice?? I am calling Shenanigans.
It is interesting, to see that so many people are chosing the Revoloutionary/Civil/WWII Wars. Because the casualties in each of those wars were astronomically higher than our more recent wars.
I chose Gulf I & Iraq/Afghan War. If I had to fight, I'd want the odds in my favor for me having a chance to come home in one piece.

1. Which side?
2. Depends on what I had going on. I'd go now if it wouldn't totally screw up my life and family.
Only (as of this post) 3 voting for the War of 1812?
You guys do realize we were invaded in that war, right? Enemy soldiers on US soil and all that?
If drafted for any of those wars, I would have served. But I'm one of those assholes who doesn't volunteer for shit. Big Brother program, Cub Scouts, after school programs, I fucking skipped all of it. I was in band in grade school and college, and that's just because the teachers came to ME when they got a brand new baritone and they wanted a "responsible" kid to play their new expensive instrument.
I am, on a personal level, a complete victim of inertia. If someone makes me do something, I do it without complaint. But if given the choice, I tend to stick to whatever I was doing before.

The Revolution or any war where we were invaded. Fuck fighting for any other country or people, sorry Jews, but until Hitler landed on American soil he could have done whatever he wanted as far as I'm concerned. The only way I'm getting shot or blown to smithereens is if my family and friends and, most importantly, my own ass is in jeopardy. The rest of this world can go screw.

I'm a conscientious objector in the war on drugs. I don't take 'em, but I don't care if others do.
But if there's another Alcoholocaust like back in the 20's, I'll be the Osama Booze Laden of the opposition.

if i HAD to goto one...no doubt gulfwar...that was just a slaughter fest that was meant to test our new toys.....i mean we killed lik 15,000 nd lost only like 70 ppl.
But obviously the most bad ass one is WW2. Thats the one that you want to say you were in. If you go around saying you were in Korea most people would be lik ...uhh? Korean war? what?

If I had to choose one over the others, I guess Revolutionary War but I picked none. I'd much rather be John Adams or Ben Franklin's lackey over in France. Or in one of those farms that didn't even know a war took place.

Are we fighting in some romantic Hollywood version of what these wars were all about, or are we fighting the real deal?
Because in reality... you had a much better chance of dying from the "the bloody flux" (aka dysentery, aka the flaming shits)... in The Rev and The Civil, than you did by catching a bullet in some heroic charge across a battlefield.

I voted for everything except Vietnam and Iraq. I don't agree with Iraq and Afghanistan on the same vote. Obviously a soldier today doesn't get a choice of where he/she is sent, but I believe in the cause in Afghanistan.

I can't watch the opening scene in Glory and a scene in epsidoe 3(?) of John Adams, because of the sawing off of limbs. So I'm aware of the risk I would be taking in those wars. I think the ideals of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War are worth the risk.

Holy crap... that sawing off limbs crap... that's gotta hurt like the dickens.
That's what I'm talking about. I mean... I'm a patriotic cat, and I consider myself a pretty brave guy and all, but day-um... sawing off my fucking limb with nothing but a swig of rum to 'take the edge off'? No, no, no... I just can't have that. If that's the case, I'm going to do like Junior... put some skeeter repellent on my feet, and you done got your last click out of Three Hole Puncher.

Hey, they weren't THAT bad.
Actually, I think the use of the Minié ball for the rifle-muskets was pretty fucking clever.
On the flipside, getting hit by a slow-moving, solid lead, .58 calibre bullet SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED. I took Dr. James I. Robertson's undergrad Civil War history classes at Virgina Tech (he's an incredibly prominent Civil War historian). The class where he specifically detailed what that lead brick did to to the human body when it hit had turned half the guys and all the chicks in the classroom green.
Ugh.

The only thing on your side in the Civil War was black powder and inaccuracy
But yeah, when you have huge calibers like that, even with black powder, you have a lot of kenetic energy.
Hell, even a percussion Hawken rifle is something to stay away from. It's terribly powerful.

The Walker Colt is still one of the most powerful handguns EVER.
The Rev and Civil wars sucked cock, the strategy being stand in one spot and shoot at each other.Huge body counts in both wars. My Grandpa was at Pearl Harbor (was already a Gunny in the Marines with 25 years in) and fought in the Pacific Theater. Not sure about fighting off human wave attacks against the Japs,or clearing caves and tunnels with a flamethrower.Fighter pilot against the Nazi's maybe? In a P-51,of course,or maybe a P-38,my favorite,. Korea is out, fucking cold as shit, crazy fucking chinks and gooks, and nobody remembers it. Vietnam,no good. R.O.E.=complete stupidity.

Since we're going back in time can we take modern weaponry with us? I always wondered how many old timey people I could kill with a 50 cal machine gun.
I'd have to go with the Revolutionary, 1812, and WW2, and I'd also throw in the first gulf war for the fun factor.

No way. Washington would thank me. They'd call me Future Man and I'd be a hero. When I was finished single handedly winning the war I'd regale them with stories about the moon landing and microwaved burritos.

I'd be the hero of course. But Washington would get the Future Man seal of approval. I'd get bored without electricity so I wouldn't stay long enough to be president. I'd just give him a few notes about how that whole constitution thing worked out, load up a wheel barrow full of expensive antiques, get some things signed by the founding fathers, then I'd step back into my time machine to sell my mint condition stuff off to the highest bidder. Of course, since I'd be the war hero I could probably sell my own signature...The Plunkies Monument better be huge...And I demand a fancier spot than stupid Roosevelt on Mount Rushmore or I'm gonna be pissed. I don't think that's too much to ask.

My Grandfather fought in WWII. A good friend of mine fought in Vietnam and same with my Uncle. My history teacher that i had a couple of years ago spent 21 years in the Navy. One of my friends is entering the Marines next year. Most recently a family friend just got home from Iraq 2 weeks ago. He is an Army Ranger, he spent 15 months over in Iraq.
I would like to fight in none of the "modern wars." i would only if called upon. But if i had to choose
i would fight in either the Revolutionary War, Civil War and then WWII.
