I saw this Bloomberg news blurb (http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conews&tkr=AAPL:US) posted on Macrumors (http://www.macrumors.com). Apple Computer May Sell Movies Online, Berliner Zeitung Says
July 14, 2003 17:59 EDT -- Apple Computer Inc., maker of the iMac personal computer, may start to sell movies online after the success of its iTunes music technology, Berliner Zeitung said, citing Pascal Cagni, the company's Vice President, Europe.Interesting, and I can sort of see it happening. They've been working on video technologies like Pixlet, the new professional QuickTime video codec in MacOS 10.3 (http://www.apple.com/macosx/panther). It allows playback of ultra-high quality studio-grade video on a desktop for the first time in history, without visual artifacts. It's super-nice!
I would rather buy a DVD. More portable and it takes up no space on my Hard drive.
The same people with the high speed internet connections can also get the movies...

Are they going to sell PORN?
I love Steve Jobs taking on the RIAA and now the movie industry, the way I felt it have been done all along. It proves people will pay a subscription to download stuff they want. Itunes and when this service takes off it makes the RIAA and the movie industry, look like the greedy pigs that they are. Sueing 12 year old kids for downloading what crap.

Personally, I'd like to see it happen, and work. I've been using Pixlet for a couple weeks now. It's really nice being able to work with HD content and send it off to my partners. Apple could probably scale it down a bit and still beat MPEG-2. We'll see what happens. The iTunes Music Store has been very successful, BTW. They're making some policy changes for some artists and independent labels. It should get interesting with iTMS 2.0.Pixlet is the first studio-grade codec for filmmakers. Pixlet provides 20-25:1 compression, allowing a 75MB/sec series of frames to be delivered in a 3MB/sec movie, similar to DV data rates. Or a series of frames that are over 6GB in size can be contained within a 250MB movie. Pixlet lets high-end digital film frames play in real time with any Panther Mac, without investing in costly, proprietary playback hardware.

120 GB hard drives are around 100 bucks now. You can get a 60 gig drives for probably 80 bucks retail, cheaper online.
DVD+R burners are around 150 on the cheap end NEC. 200 for a Plextor both are 4X burners.
The media is still a little bit expensive per disc price.
