I've been trying to read up on how to make a small herb garden since pre-bought herbs go bad quickly, are expensive, and the dried crap isn't half as good. Any suggestions?

I have a small herb garden located in one section of my landscaping beds, right next to the steps of my back deck. If you don't want to go big, just get several clay pots and do an herb in each one.

Pick whatever you think you'll use the most. Go to a good garden center, and get pregrown plants, then you have some you can start hitting now, and also have an established root structure.

I've got a three year old rosemary plant that I trim back each winter, so you can have some last forever, and others that have to be replanted every spring...of course geography/latitude has a lot to do with that.

Cilantro and basil... easy to grow, and there's nothing better than fresh cilantro and basil. Stagger the plantings, so you'll have fresh batches all summer long.

Cilantro for your Mexican food and guacamole, and basil for your tomatoes and fresh mozzarella... among other things.

Mint for your Mojitos...

Watch out if you grow any kind of mint... that shit goes hog wild. It'll take over your garden if you don't keep an eye on it. I had a batch that dug under my fence, traveled over ten feet, and invaded my next door neighbor's garden.

When I moved in here three years ago, the entire back corner of the yard was overrun with mint...one good soaking with Roundup...BUH-BYE!!!
