He lives in the building behind mine, so I don't know him, but I took this photo the other day from my balcony right after a flatbed truck delivered this fun and cool-looking toy. He keeps it in the parking lot under a tarp, and I see that it's gone some of the time, but I haven't actually seen him drive it away so I have no clue where the hell he drives it. Anyone know what it is and what it's purpose is?

That sir is a Max ATV that is meant for swamps and flooded timber areas.

It of course has six wheels and its body is basically like a boat to float over water. So, you just float across lakes and flooded areas and the wheels will move you forward.

Hah, we had a neurosurgeon neighbor growing up that had one of those. He used to drive it from his garage into the local lake. They've been around awhile since this was back in the 80s.

I remember them from the 70's.That fucking show I used to watch when I was little, can't remember the name, live action,3 guys in costumes like a dog,a monkey? Something like that. They use to drive around in those things at the beginning of each show. This would have been 71? I was 6.

Ahhhh, very cool! I have to talk to this guy next time I see him out in the parking lot and find out where he takes this thing. I know there's areas very close to my apt. where people ride quads and dirtbikes, but I'm not exactly sure where. Furthermore, I can't think of what use this guy would have for such a versatile ATV around here, but I guess there's a reason because it's not a cheap toy. Evidently he has a few options added to the model in the link below since it has roll bars and a pretty good sized winch on the front. (1,000lbs towing capacity - impressive!)

EDIT - There is a huge park near where I live with a lake. Perhaps he takes it there, but I'm unsure of what's allowed on the lake even after much searching.

It's brand new, and as stated in my previous posts, I don't know where he takes it. I am going to find out.

As far as the other past few replies go...it's internet madness. MADNESS!

I still don't see the point in owning those things outside of swamp land. I prefer being able to fly down dirt roads on an ATV at 50-60mph instead of putzing around at 20mph in a big bulky motherfucker that weighs twice as much as a four-wheeler.

The one used in the Bannana Spits was an Amphicat. They were made 1965 - 1975

Maybe the guy lives alone and doesn't need a whole house. Home ownership isn't for everyone. That myth is part of the reason why homes aren't worth shit now. Convincing people who shouldn't be buying houses that they should, and then acting surprised when they can't pay their mortgage, ran all the prices down.

Having said that, I can think of 1000 other toys I'd rather have than that thing, but maybe he has a use for it. I'm sure they're good for something or they wouldn't still be making them after all these years. Everything has a use.

renting property is a waste of money. the mortgage debacle was caused by the lying pieces of shit that were lending money, and real estate agents not the borrowers, you lie so some one and tell them that they can afford something that they cant and your willing do to anything to get out of the rent trap what do you expect.

This isn't really the place to discuss this, but living expenses are living expenses. Taking the money you save by renting vs. owning and investing it will get you to the same place, and the last couple of years have proven that property values are not always going up. It's a lifestyle choice. A single guy who decides to rent can hardly be faulted for not wanting to drop money on a three bedroom house when he's not going to need it. On the flip side, a family with 6 kids would be crazy to rent something. It's all situational.

And judging by that photograph of that machine, I doubt that guy has that many people to go home to. He looks to me like a prime candidate for rental. Don't bash the poor lonely fellow for enjoying his one thing to live for.

I honestly don't know what would make a grown fucking adult want to ride ANY sort of off road vehicle for fun. I can see using it for hunting or farm work, but who spends thousands on a vehicle just to drive it down rocky, dirty roads and ruin it? This applies to people who take brand new Jeeps and such off road too. I'd be damned if I'd spend $25k on a Jeep and ruin the paint with rocks and dirt. It just makes no sense to me.

Grown men playing with expensive toys just baffles me.

eh. i have a quad, now it is a utility model that i bought to plow my drive way but i do enjoy taking it out on trail rides and i used to take it to field trials and i love to ride it around my neighborhood, the jeep thing is a little odd to me, i know guys that spend thousands of dollars to build them then wreck them a week later.... the same goes with my race car buddies. race them on sunday and fix them on monday

this is another company that sells the 6X6 machines http://www.argoatv.com/recreational/recvehicles.aspx

Using an ATV to plow is perfect. Racing for free is just folly. My jeep might as well not even have 4 wheel drive, i've used it maybe once or twice in the 2 years i've owned the thing.

My Previa is AWD and it rocks in shitty weather. I do get really annoyed at the douches who ride next to another douche cockblocking the lanes...

I can't understand those rock crawling motherfuckers that buy $30,000 SUVs and then spend another $5,000 on suspension systems, tires and rockers and then go out and run them into rocks or trees or roll the motherfuckers over.

But in a few months I will be buying a new SUV to use off-road but it's not entirely for fun. I'm also not one of those people worried about putting a dent or scratch on my vehicle. If I break something then I will replace it. Off-road vehicles are meant to use, not to drive your kids to soccer practice and to get groceries.

That's the problem today because everyone has bought huge Excursions, Tahoes, H2s that they don't even use and just bitch about the gas mileage. That's why everyone is using so much gas because they are driving vehicles they don't REALLY use.
