This topic comes up on occasion round these parts so wanted to make a thread about coffee. The best beverage ever. Not cappuccinos or fraps or cafe lattes or anything like that. Just the plain black coffee.

I also like red eyes, coffee with shots of espresso.

Yeah Kona is great. I was pissed when wawa took away the kenya and brought in the Columbian. I found if I make a 50-50 mix of the kona and columbian, the flavor is close.

I'll have to try venezuelan.

This is true. If I'm ever slumming it in a Starbucks I ask for a "Large Black Coffee" please. They have their little signs up with the cute Italian names they've given all the cups so I can be more informed...

Fuck you you snooty piece of shit. It's small, medium, and large, and P.S. you're not a "Barista" you're a coffee pourer and you make $6.00 an hour so don't be looking at me like I'm the great unwashed. I could own you for what I have in my pocket. Eat my shit Starbucks worker!

Love Kona, but most of the Kona you find is blend - part real Kona and part other Arabica. There is definitely a difference. I used to get coffee from Bad Ass Coffee Company. I first tried it when I was in Hawaii years ago. But at close to $50 a pound, I haven't ordered in a long time. They do sell a blend that is a lot cheaper, but it doesn't make sense to pay the shipping charge when I can get Kona blends elsewhere.

For everyday drinking, I keep a bag of DD at home.

I also just found a new coffee variety I really like - Jamaican Blue Mountain. I remembered the coffee when I went to Jamaica on vacation. Good flavor without being bitter.

I also don't make whole pots of coffee. I have a Senseo that I can make pods for, and another maker with a permanent filter that I can make single cups up to about 16ozs.

My non-coffee-drinking ass does enjoy the Vanilla Bean Frappuchino from Starbucks, but I don't make a habit of it. I've had like 5 of them since I got turned onto them.

I LOVE coffee. The name kona can be misleading. To be labeled as kona it only has to be 2% actual kona coffee. All the rest can be crap.

For real kona I've ordered it from here: www.kona-coffee.com

Raspberry/blueburrrrry from Dunkin Donuts is the only one for me... I mix it up occasionally and try other flavors because I got sick of french vanilla after having only that for like 3 years straight.

Starbucks is incredibly overrated. I'd also like to try some of these obscure/imported brands mentioned here.

while on the topic, I recently saw an interesting documentary on the history of coffee: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Coffee_(film)

Starbucks is not overrated. You never hear anyone say "You know who has good coffee? Those motherfuckers at Starbucks." People use them for their drinks that are more milk and sugar than the sweet, sweet brown liquid that gives me life.

And talking about Starbucks, I can't drink a small or a medium coffee. I need the large one. But that's how it is for most places. In 7-11, 24 oz. In Dunkin Donuts, large (because it's $2 and if I get extra large I have to piss around with change and fuck that shit). In any other store, it's the largest they have- usually 20 oz.

But in that once in a blue moon time when I'm in the mood for a frappuccino for whatever reason, I can only order a small (without whipped cream) and only drink maybe half of it before having to throw it out. How the fuck does a human being drink a venti frappuccino?

And coffee doesn't keep me awake, it doesn't get me hyper. Whenever anyone says "I had a cup of coffee at 9 and now I'm not going to be able to sleep unti 2 in the morning" I want to beat them senseless and call them a liar. I drink it because I like the taste and it helps prevent headaches.

A barista is a skilled person who can often can use a real, lever actuated espresso maker and who knows their shit when it comes to coffee drinks and the people in Starbucks aint it in my experience. Real baristas seem only to work in Italy and really good Italian Restaurants. Real baristas are also allowed to use the italian words for things as they are working in one of the above locations and not some quasi ersats espresso shop started by some seattle shitdick.

I am working on getting my head barista certification through the company I work for. we are not starbucks and actually use an espresso machine with a manual steam wand and we use fresh ground beans.

Plus the company audits us every year and the past few have been 90-100%

MCDONALDS has the BEST coffee around here in NJ. They changed it to compete with Starbucks. (As long as the cute Mexican girl doesn't kill my coffee with milk because that will ruin my commute and cause me to drive badly, cursing immigrants & cows. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU PUT MILK IN FIRST AND FILL IT 1/3 THE WAY UP??? EVEN 1/4 CUP OF MILK IS TOO MUCH!!!)

At home it's FOLGERS GOURMET! Try it!

But THE ABSOLUTE BESTEST COFFEE IN THE WORLD is at the Polynesian Resort in Orlando Florida. They use a gourmet hotel coffee mixed with a special Disney blend. If you stay in the Consierge building, this coffee actually comes OUT OF A MACHINE on the second floor!!! This is the building that serves light meals throughout the day. I would drink 20 cups a day there. I would even wake up at 3AM and grab a cup. I took home as many complimentary coffee packs from the room as I could but the hotel coffee was only half of the flavor. They mixed the hotel coffee with Disney coffee so although the hotel coffee packs I brought home were great, It wasn't the same as getting the Disney Blend out of that damn machine on the 2nd floor of the Hawaii Building. AMAZING COFFEE!

I can't drink the Starbucks crap, because I can not stand any product that practices fair trade. I like to taste the tears of the Columbian children that pick each bean for 12 hours a day.

I prefer a nice, black, cup of medium roast Illy coffee.

Having just been to the Disney Resort of which you speak sir, I'm cognizant of the coffee to which you refer. It might suprise you to know that due to several corparate synergies, the coffee served inside of WDW is actually Nescafe and the machine you speak of mixes up a nice cup of Nescafe Instant Coffee (There is no other kind of Nescafe) with every pull on the handle. That's why there's the delay between letting go of the handle and the flow of coffee stopping. It should therefore be easy for you to replicate this amazing coffee experience at home with some hot water and a spoon.

:rotf:

That boy ain't lyin'!

Disney has a contract with Nestlé... Nestlé + cafe = Nescafe.

They have the freeze-dried pseudocoffee machines all over the parks.

Whaddya know? All those times I suffered with crappy instant coffee when I was backpacking in the Adirondacks, I was actually drinking "THE BESTEST COFFEE IN THE WORLD!"

DJ Evel Ed

Mind you, this isnt the instant coffee found around the park. This is only ONE particular machine that was maintained by the consierge staff in the Hawaii Building. They told me it was a secret Disney blend. HAH!

NESCAFE...Ancient Disney secret HUH!?!

Thats great news! I'm going to get that hotel coffee (Cafe Valet) and mix it with Nescafe and see if I can replicate it.

This is the hotel coffee they blended their Ancient Disney Secret with:
http://centric1.expressivetek.com/courtesy2007/images/products/15540.jpg

So possibly the formula is:

Cafe Valet + Nescafe = The Bestest Coffee In The World

Tried the new Starbuck's Pike Place. This is the one that's supposed to be the answer to the DD, WaWa, etc. Brewed every half hour, smoother, etc. Crap! Just not as crappy (bitter) as the usual Starbucks coffe. Still has that over-roasted flavor, just not so much.

I'm just a plain coffee, small shot of half-and-half (keep it darK) and a little bit of sugar or splenda. I don't go for the lattes, frapucinos, etc. The only way I can usually stomach Starbucks is light and sweet.

I guess they think they have roast the crap out the coffee so the flavor holds up under all the additional stuff they're used to adding. The additions - milk, whipped cream, etc - are cheaper than the coffee. If they didn't roast it so much, they would have to actually put more coffee in the cup.

QFT...

The first time I tried Starbucks coffee, I was ready to go slap the coffee-pourer for putting out a cigarette in my cup. That shit is way over-roasted... which is the reason why most people need to dump in cinnamon, and whipped cream, and pumpkin spice, and butterscotch sauce, etc... anything to mask the charred campfire taste.

And I won't even bother discussing the price they charge... beyond ridiculous.

The only way I make coffee at home.

While I've tried several mail order joints over time, I found I like the stuff I get from a local wholesaler. They run a small retail shop in their roasting plant, you get coffee that was roasted that day. Also, they buy from small organic plantations around the world. Sweet stuff.

I'm givig myself the DD coffee challenge this week. no Starbucks for a week. So far the Toasted Almond is delicious. Biggest thing i'm noticing, which is what i like, is the more bitter bite that I get from the Starbucks bean. It doesnt have that deep roasted full flavor depth I like. But I'm gonna give it the full week.

regardless of boiling pt. the water temp shouldn't be over 205F. Prime temp range is 195 - 205. That allows the fullest extraction of all the good flavor enzymes in the coffee. If you go over then other enzymes will be released that make any coffee nasty and bitter.

Thats where most people go wrong
