CINCINNATI - A man ordered by a judge to make sure his daughter studied has found himself in jail because she failed to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Brian Gegner, who lives near Cincinnati, was sentenced last week to 180 days in jail for contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a minor.
He was ordered months ago to make sure his 18-year-old daughter Brittany Gegner, who has a history of truancy, received the diploma known as GED — something that hasn't happened yet.
Brittany Gegner, who said Monday that she plans to take a required GED test this month, said her father shouldn't be blamed for her failure because she has been living with her mother.
"It was my wrongdoing, not his," said Brittany Gegner, whose fiance and 18-month-old daughter also live at her mother's home. "He shouldn't have to go to jail for something I did."
Her mother agrees.
"Brittany is almost 19 years old now and I think it's unfair to put her father in jail," said Shana Roach. "She's an adult now, and it's not right to rip an innocent man from his home."
Juvenile Court administrator Rob Clevenger Jr. said Monday that the court still has jurisdiction in the case because Brittany Gegner was a juvenile when the truancy problems began and when the charge against Brian Gegner was filed in 2007.
A hearing on a motion filed by Brian Gegner's attorney to reconsider the sentence is scheduled for Friday. Messages seeking comment were not returned Monday at the offices of defense attorney Tamara Sack and the prosecutor.
Brian Gegner's wife, Stephanie Gegner, said she and her husband are afraid he will lose his job if he remains in jail. She said they tried to keep his daughter in school.
"You'd take her to school and she'd go out the other door," Stephanie Gegner said.

I know a guy who's 20 and just got his GED.
Failed the math portion of it more than once, but he can tell you everything about the Beastie Boys or provide an in-depth summary of every episode of MST3K ever produced.
His family basically enabled his behavior, and it seems like this is the situation going on with this dad.

Why not? We're going to have to be paying for his mistake for the rest of HER life in welfare payments and assisted housing for the rest of her life. Shouldn't he have to pay for that in some way?
She can't get a fucking GED and has an 18 month old baby already. You have any idea what the future holds for that little welfare baby making factory? That's hundreds of thousands of dollars of OUR money that dumb motherfucker blew by not being a better father.

She didn't pass, the suspension of the charges ends, he gets the old truancy charges for being a shitty dad.

Yes, there are people who do well without a formal education. Good for them. That's like betting on a "2" in roulette every time because you once won $700 on a $20 bet on "2". It's bad odds, and it's a dumb bet. And I'm willing to be that your step-father-in-law is a bigger dick and asshole about education for his kids, step-kids, and grand-step-kids than just about anybody else you know, because he KNOWS how fucking hard it is to go from a 10th grade education to his level of success.
WITH an education, what could he have done?

Most people shouldn't have children, but they do. Most of them are to blame for the army of fuck ups we have, not just here in America, but everywhere the world over. But it's like anything else, there are no absolutes. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, your kid is going to fuck up. They are going to rebel, they don't want to hear shit, nothing bad is going to happen to them, etc etc etc.
Without knowing the specifics, I don't think the guy should go to jail.
However, if he is one of these pussy let-my-kid-do-whatever-he/she-wants, or was a generally bad parent or a neglectful one, not only should he be in jail, he should be shot along with the mother to ensure they can't continue to spread their miserable mistakes further and pollute this world with more useless oxygen sucking parasites that offer nothing to no one.

It's not that complicated for me.
I support the laws saying that if a kid misses too much school time, the parents are subject to being thrown in jail. I think they're a good idea. It encourages parents to be better parents, and it encourages kids to go to school.
All that happened here, from what I can figure out, is that the court was being NICE to this guy by giving him an out: if his daughter, despite being a pregnant teenage dropout, could pass the GED, he wouldn't be prosecuted as he could have/should have been years earlier.
She didn't. He was. He pays the price for screw-ups made a decade earlier.
