saw both movies last night at the drive-in, gotta say I'll give Iron Man 7 out 10 popcorn boxes, left half way thru Speed Racer, it really wasn't doing anything for me. Maybe it was that the mix of animation and live action didn't play well on the drive-in screen but it was losing my attention fast. Iron Man was actually pretty cool, but there were just some things about it that bugged me.

I never read one of the comics but the movie I thought was great. what bugged you? I actually saw it twice after big kev's geek stuff on last saturday talking about the cameo of samuel l jackson playing nick fury(who ever the fuck that is) talking about the avengers. I look foward to the next Iron Man movie.
when I saw the Iron Man movie there was a preview for the Incredible Hulk Movie. Did they completly scrap the last movie and just redo the movie. regardless i do NOT look foward to this movie at all. I will wait for the reviews and let everyone else tell me if this shit is worth watching. also according to big kev's geek stuff the hulk makes a cameo appearance in the next Iron Man.

I'm not sure what it was about the movie that bugged me, something I can't put my finger on. The effects were great, the plot was good, never read the comic either, but there was something that was missing that bothered me and I can't place it.

I thouht Iron Man was a good flick overall due to the actors involved and very good when you consider how most comic book movie "origin" films for the most part blow.
Ron can be a bit a movie snob against any action/fantasy/sci-fi but I did laught when he ripped on the power source for Iron Man;s suit being a new form of energy that can change the worls, yet is only used for this goofy suit.

Don't forget animation. He misses some of the best movies ever because they're just cartoons. Maybe if everyone in the movie had some kind of non-American accent and rebellious attitudes towards "the man" he would deem them worthy.

Iron Man was very good. High B+.
Speed Racer was a D. Horrible piece of shit.
Prince Caspian is a C but I never saw Narnia 1 or read the books.
Indy IV is a high C+/ low B-. OK diversion but nothing special.
Ron is a movie snob but I kind of like that about him. I've been turned on to far more movies from Ron than I have anyone else on 202. I never would have thought of going through Peckinpah if it weren't for him. And I not hold it against him. Not everyone is an action movie fan or a popcorn movie fan. Iron Man was good for people who like that but I can clearly see why he wouldn't like it. Do I feel sometimes he gives an unfair shake to movies? Sure. But it's what he likes and dislikes.

What recent animations would you put in the best movies ever? I know he has a bias against adults seeing cartoons- and I did like Incredibles and Ratatouille- but what recent animations would you consider among the best movies ever? He admitted to liking the older Disney movies and I still consider movies like Fantasia to be some of the best animation I've ever seen. And don't give me that anime bullshit.

I'm going to have to give you some of that anime bullshit since you already dismissed Pixar films, otherwise I'll be limited to Computer Generated Dancing Animals XII. Maybe best movies ever was a bit of a stretch but "Spirited Away" in 2001 was amazing. "Princess Mononoke" as well but it was 11 years ago, I don't know what you mean by recent.

No doubt about it that Ron has more highbrow tastes and why shouldn't he. It doesn't effect what movies and TV I like. Also keep in mind Ron doesn't HATE sci fi. He hates silly shit. Ron is on record enjoying Blade Runner and Close Encounters in the Sci Fi genre and a great underrated movie like Frailty in the Thrillers genre.
Most popcorn movies are silly and dumbed down because they have to appeal to everyone, where No Country and There Will be Blood can be more refined because it's only meant to appeal to a small audience.
Incredibles and Ratatouille are the best animated movies I've ever seen and most PIXAR movies hit the mark. (Cars was a letdown)

I was as inappropriately attracted to the protagonist as the next guy but it was still a beautiful movie. The characters were deep, the designs were amazing, the story didn't drag at all. I don't know all the movie jargon to do a real review but it is a good example of a great movie Ron missed because of his snobbery or bias or whatever.
Even other movie snobs liked it. It won an Academy Award and the amusingly named Golden Bear.

You mean the IMDB link that states Iron Man 2 for the summer of 2010.
Or do you mean the Avengers movie for July 2011?
Or it could be the Captain America for May of 2011?

You know we talk alot about whats going on in the news in the geek culture. We know alot of it is rumor and speculation and we often say that while discussing certain topics. As for the Hulk making a cameo in the second Iron Man film...I dodnt remember if we said that on the show or not but if we did it was probably speculative. We know that Tony Stark appears in the Hulk movie. It's probably gonna be an after credit stinger to be honest but who knows. As for Iron Man 2 Marvel has most certainly announced it already along with the Cap Movie and an Avengers movie. We also know there is a Thor movie in the works and there has been a long time conversation about an Antman movie so who knows where the other ties in as far as the "Avengers" goes. So while you say we are off the mark most times we are reporting on and opining on the most recent news and rumors in the community of the comic book movies.

I'd have to listen to the episode again for the specifics, but the lack of knowledge on certain characters or what projects were at what stage was staggering. You know, I've just seen a slew of popcorn movies, and sadly Ronnie ended up going to the shittier ones.
Hellboy 2 I think Ronnie would have appreciated. The hero also smokes a cigar and there's a lot of material on how much he loves Cubans. The plot is tighter than Dark Knight, and although it's a little sillier, Del Toro creates a stronger movie. It doesn't have that powerhouse Joker performance, but I believe it is a stronger popcorn film.
Wall-E. Fucking Wall-E. A movie that finally breaks American animated movies out of the childish rut they've been in and creates something more adult and existential. I think Ron would have actually enjoyed this animated film. It has an interesting viewpoint of our future and one that might not be too far from the truth, albeit perhaps a bit optimistic. And there are some great hommages to 2001.
I'll be seeing the other popcorn movies of the summer soon to have a more complete perspective. I don't think there have been any great arthouse flicks to roll thru have there? If anything has been disappointing this year, it's the arthouse flicks.
