A Cache County elementary school teacher has been charged with child sex abuse.
33-year-old Scott Rogers taught at Thomas Edison Charter School South in Nibley. He faces two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and has now been suspended with one week of school left.
Officials at his school were shocked to learn of the allegations. "Complete and total surprise," said Principal Eldon Budge. "He was well liked and this could not have been guessed by anyone."
Rogers has been at the school for three years, first teaching fourth grade, then second grade. School officials say a pre-hire background check turned up nothing out of the ordinary.
A letter sent home to parents Friday explains the investigation and Rogers' status with the school. It does not say whether the victim was a student at Thomas Edison. But after talking with almost all of the parents of Rogers' second-grade class, Budge says he's confident those kids weren't involved. "A lot of what has come out of this is more reassurance than verification of a major concern," said Budge.
Rogers had already resigned as of the end of this school year. "He indicated that he was pursuing other interests," Budge said.
Any parents with concerns about Rogers' relationship with their children can contact Det. Carver with the Cache County Sheriff's Office. Her phone number is (435) 755-1159.
