It was discussed this past week, so I'm asking the WB'ers. What do you think the future of music is? One caller mentioned the artist JUSTICE ( http://www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous ), and though I don't subscribe to the whole christian music movement, Justice has some pretty good tracks.

Don't crucify me for this (no pun intended), but if you sign up for Sirius's 3-day trial and listen to ch. 34 you will hear where music is going. It is my opinion that the true NEW sound of music will be Electro-Rock.

10 years ago I used to sit in my bedroom listening to Liquid Todd broadcast his "Solid State" show on 92.3, and I couldn't figure out what the music was all about - I simply loved it. Now I know what it is, and I see what is has become; it is evolving. It is truly the new style of music.

It's breakbeats, electronic rock/funk melodies, rap lyrics infused with hard guitar licks, alternative guitar rhythms and meaningful lyrics that's going to pave the road for the future of REAL music. It's what Pete Tong and Annie Mac play on BBC Radio1 every weekend. I suppose someone will come up with a name for this new genre of so many sounds melded into one. In the meantime, I'll dance and enjoy. :)

Nothing that will last more than 90 days in the spotlight. Extremely segmented markets. Mediocrity.

Called ElectroRock.

Not that electronica needed another sub-genre but its the flavor of the month.

It's nothing new. It's just bands being influenced by 80's New Wave. Also, Beck has been doing that shit for over a Decade and the Deftones and Linkin Park, to name a couple, have incorporated that sound in to some of their songs.

I really think with the way that the corporations have consolidated so much it might be really hard for a new underground movement to explode in the same way that rap did in the 80's or the way that grunge did in the 90's.

Also because of the internet everything is so instant, you can cut a demo, put it on the internet and have people all around the world hearing it within moments. For all of the benefits the internet has given us, it's effect on burgeoning music movements has been really detrimental. I mean in the way that I don't think any of these movements have a real home base, like Seattle, or college rock in Boston/Amherst in the late 80's with groups like Dinosaur Jr, The Pixies, Buffalo Tom, Sebadoh, Lemonheads and so many more.

I also wonder what hasn't been done yet. Look up Sigue Sigue Sputnik, which was the new band from the members of Generation X after Billy Idol left it. Everything from their music to their style was Electro Clash/Punk in 1985.

I have an older brother who was obsessed with the New York Hard Core scene of the mid 80's. He'll talk about how there will never be another movement like it. Everything was word of mouth, you had to get out to the Lower East Side to really live it. It took time to grow and evolve, and then by the mid 90's members of those bands had new bands like Helmet that were getting the first multi-million dollar signing bonuses from the majors.

Unfortunately modern rock radio barely plays new music. So as big as these underground styles of Electro Clash, or Forth Generation Ska, or Grime, or anything else gets, I don't see any of them making a change like grunge did during my life, where even stores like Macy's are dressing their mannequins up in baggy jeans and flannel shirts.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

As for the future of music.... The lines have been sooo blurred that there isnt one real future genre that is going to take over. Hip Hop and Pop dominates the airwaves and commercials.

IMO, whatever is big, is what women and the blacks can really get into. That is your future.

The future of music is in the past. Older stuff is a lot better than the crap the major record companies are shoving down our throats these days.

The future?

Complete and utter shit.

I really think as time goes on the period of the 60's-90's will be looked at as a musical renaissance, something that will be unmatched for a long time to come.

One of the main reasons is technology. So many music movements were created due to newer technology. The electric guitar brought on rock. Synthesizers brought on disco, new wave and basically everything 80's pop. Drum machines and samplers brought out rap and all of electronica. Computers brought even more sophisticated electronic music and brought the music studio into your home computer.

I think technology has gone so far that there really isn't much to do new with music. The electric bass and guitar has been around long enough that there isn't much room to make new techniques. It's almost all been done for the most part.

So what kind of music do you get?

I must ask... what is worth listening to at the moment? I cannot think of anything particularly special recently.

I'll be thirty in about two months, and looking back on how music has evolved in just that amount of time makes me kinda anxious to see what happens. Ten, hell, even five years ago it seemed like Rap and hip-hop were going to remain the forefront of contemporary music forever. If you go to a mall on a Friday night in the last three years the kids all have emo hair and black t-shirts on. That was kind of startiling the first time i noticed it.

I went to see a band called Portugal the Man about a year ago, and as soon as I got in line to enter the venue I realized i could see clear to the front of the line. I had to be the only one there over 21 by a long shot. (No line at the bar, so I got reprehensibly drunk) Anyway, i was suprised not only at the turn out but how engrossed the kidssss were. I'm not a big supporter of pop-punk, emo, etc. but it's refreshing to see the younger people appreciating bands with musicianship to them. I'm not knocking rap, but all the white kids thinking they weren't was getting really annoying.

Its hard to say. I feel like the American Idol wave has crested and begun to recede, and I don't think the power chord is going anywhere. I've typed alot for not really making a descernible point, yech. Gregorian chant is coming back ina big, big way.
