A Nassau police officer remained in critical condition Monday morning after a suspected drunken driver plowed into his cruiser during a traffic stop in Plainview, police and a hospital spokeswoman said.
Officer Kenneth Baribault, 30, underwent surgery for a severe head injury after the driver, who had a suspended license, slammed into his car early Sunday on the Long Island Expressway (http://www.newsday.com/topic/travel/commuting/long-island-expressway-PLTRA0000132.topic), police said.
The officer also had broken bones in both his upper and lower torso, police said.
"We're all saying a prayer for him," said Nassau County Police (http://www.newsday.com/topic/crime-law-justice/police/nassau-county-police-ORGOV000099.topic) Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey outside Nassau University Medical Center Sunday afternoon, where the injured officer had just come out of surgery for a blood clot on the brain.

Police: Nassau cop hit by drunken driver Monday morning, Baribault was in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the East Meadow hospital, NUMC spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg said.
As the officer fights for his life, the driver who hit him, Rahiem Griffin, also remained hospitalized with minor injuries Monday morning, police officials said. He was to be arraigned at the hospital later in the day.
Griffin, 27, of Shirley, was driving the Mercedes-Benz that hit the officer's police cruiser. Griffin has been charged with one count of driving while intoxicated. Additional charges are pending, police said.
A second drunken driving suspect -- the driver of an SUV that initially had been pulled over -- was arraigned Monday morning on charges of driving while intoxicated and driving without a license.
Marcin Bykuc, 25, of Bay Shore, pleaded not guilty to the charges at First District Court, Hempstead.
