MacArthur Center will serve as a cathedral for competitive eaters this June, as the venue plays host to the 2008 Mid Atlantic Regional Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Top eaters on the Major League Eating circuit, a growing and increasingly celebrated breed of American athlete, will gather in downtown Norfolk to battle for the hot dog eating crown.
The winner will earn the chance to compete in the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, an event that has been held each year in Coney Island, New York since 1916, according to legend. Headlining the field will be 105-lb. Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas of Alexandria, VA, the No. 6-ranked eater in the world. She holds numerous eating world records including cheesecake, hard boiled eggs, tacos, meatballs, chili cheese fries, and baked beans. This year's change in the duration of the contest from 12 minutes to 10 minutes could work in Thomas's favor, putting her superior technique ahead of other's larger stomach capacity.
The contest to be held Saturday, June 7th at 12:30 p.m., is an official qualifying round of the Nathan's Famous worldwide hot dog eating circuit brought to you by HMSHost. The winner will receive the right to represent the United States in the 93rd Annual Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog-Eating Contest on July 4th in Coney Island, NY. Anyone 18 years of age or older may compete, but must pre-register.
