Ok, first, let me state that I already have an Xbox 360 and a Wii, and Im happy with both systems. No bashing and fanboy shit, please.
Now, that out of the way, Im seriously considering buying a PS3. I have MGS4 preordered (the limited edition, at that), and I dont think Im going to want to wait for a PS3 later int he summer with that game sitting on my shelf staring at me. Considering Im getting the LE of Metal Gear, that pretty much rules out the 80GB MGS bundle. I do have several PS2 games, and I would like to keep the best backwards compatability that I can. Hard drive size isnt really an issue, as I plan to (rather quickly) get a large (250-320GB) SATA laptop drive to drop in it. I dont have an HDTV yet (Ill get my Samsung in July), but I have a setup that lets me use HDMI to my PC monitor for a display. WiFi is a MAJOR plus, as my new apartment's layout will make hardwiring unsightly.
All of that being said, whats my best bet for the different versions of the PS3? Try to find an original 60gb? Go for a newer 80? Sony has made so damn many changes that I cant keep up with this shit any more. Im not 100% sold on buying one yet, as MGS4 is the only game Im interested in for the system right now. However, after I get my Samsung TV (L46A550) it will be pulling double duty as a Blu-Ray drive. Neither of those is a HUGE priotirt, its just all an idea Im kicking around.

If you still have your PS2 why are you concerned with backwards compatibility?

Because its one less system to have hooked up to the TV, less wires to deal with and less overall headache.

60 or 80 is fine. both will do wifi, whatever you can get for a decent deal i guess. i guess try to get an 80gb, sometimes if a game has a freezing issue on ps3, many people blame the 60gb as freezing more. that said, ive never had a problem on my 60gb. really doesnt matter

I have the low end 40GB. I have no PS2 games so I didn't care about backward compatibility. I actually bought it for the BluRay. My son picked up some games for it and it's his favorite system. We also have the 360 and the Wii. It was the easiest to get on the wireless network and it's a nice system.
Hmm... just read this and realize I brought absolutely nothing to this conversation. Wisdom says just delete this and don't post it. Oh well...

I have the 80Gb model, and I love it.
Wi-Fi, Blu-Ray w/ upscaling, Bluetooth, HDMI, and media card slots all built in. Common (non-proprietary) HDDs are easy to swap out if you want more space. I have a bunch of games, and add-on content installed and I am not near the HDDs limit.
I also use the built in media center function to play vid, picts, and music from my PC through Windows Media Player. My connection is wireless and works well.
I have had no problems with PS2 backwards compatibility (so far), although I think the PS2 Guitar Hero games do not work, but that is more of a controller issue.
The 60GB model would need to be bought used, since I do not think it is made anymore. It is coveted since it has the "best" backwards compatibilty, or so I hear. It seems the 80Gb model is pretty much it for now, unless you want to eBay it.
For backwards compatibilty, you can go here and enter the game's title:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
I think there are complete lists out there also.

I say give it some more time to mull about. I work at a gaming store and customers are constantly plagued with PS3 technical problems: overheating, won't play games, it goes on and on.
If there's a game coming out that you just can't live without (MGS4 f'rinstance), then fuck it, go for it. It's all about having fun.
But if you think you can hold off, I say wait. Knowing Sony, a new model will be out sooner than later, one with hopefully less glitches and whatnot.

Get the 80GB for all the reasons Shaved Lebanese Bear states. You still have a backup PS2 for those last gen games you just can't live without (if it's not BC).

Thats pretty much the conclusion I had come to, also, but I cant find any 80gb systems right now that AREN'T the MGS bundle. Again, its not an urgent issue for me, at least right now, but it IS something Ill be looking at very seriously in the not too distant future.

I have a 60 gig model, about a year old. No problems so far, but Gran Turismo 4 sometimes freezes after races, and I lose my prize. Frustrating, for sure. Various PS2 games have different problems.
PS2 Guitar Hero games do not work at all, and aren't meant to apparently.

Does anyone have the 40 gig? Wal-mart has a deal this week where you get a $100 gift card for buying the 40gig...wife and i are thinking of upgrading from PS2, neither one of us are big gamers probably gonna play the new GTA, i ususally get Raw vs. smackdown every year, not too much more than that...is it decent or is it worth it to drop the extra $100 for the 80 gig?

Get the cheaper one. The PSN doesn't really offer enough downloads to justify the larger hard drive. You said it yourself, you don't care about PS2 titles. Go ahead and get the 40 gig version.

Wut???
I'm glad I bought the 80GB because I'm always downloading PSN only games, themes, wallpapers, demos, movies, music, etc...
The built-in wi-fi, extra USB slots, etc are worth the extra cost for me because my network is downstairs and my PS3 is upstairs in the master bedroom.
PSN games worth downloading:
PixelJunk Monsters
Super Stardust HD
Commando 3
PAIN
Tekken 5
...and a couple more I can't think of right now.

The 40 gig one also has wifi and it has 2 usb slots. He said himself he isn't that much into gaming. The controllers are wireless so that just means you can only charge 2 at a time. I don't think that will cramp his style too much.
Be honest. There isn't enough content on the PSN to fill up a 40 gig drive much less the 60 gig one on my ps3. If they do come out with enough stuff in the future, then he can upgrade the drive own his own.

Thank you sir. I believe I am going to go with the 40gb, i'm not even planning on hooking it up to the internet at this point and from what i read it's pretty easy to upgrade the memory without voiding the warranty, if i choose to do so in the future.
Now...I am assuming that the system only comes with 1 controller and that since it has a hard drive that memory cards are a thing of the past, so what else will i need that is not included in the box to get me set up?

Not enough to fill up the drive, but it's getting there in terms of quality downloads. Qore just started up and of course I subscribed to it...Also, I bought a 4-controller charge station, it's much nicer than plugging into the USB ports, so yes, number of ports shouldn't be an issue.
Wasn't aware of the 40GB having built-in Wifi...may as well go in as cheap as you can if you want a PS3.

Well, buy:

(1) Nyko 4-port Controller charge station

Also, not hooking up the PS3 to the internet really gimps the system's awesomeness.

Well, you will probably have to make an Internet connection when you hook it up for the first time, as the unit will probably need a system update. Besides the past updates, there is a new one coming which will add some cool improvements.

Alright, I've been really hardline about not getting a PS3 just based on their HORRENDOUS PR when it was launched, but now I've sort of cooled off (mostly because of MGS4). Aside from Blu-Ray (which I don't care about) is there anything else about this system that will carry me over the hill to purchase it?

I bought reconditioned 60 gig Ps3 from gamestop last year and swapped hard drive with 180 gig hard drive. worked great until a few weeks ago when it quit reading game, dvd, and blu ray disks, sony wouldn't even look at what was causing problem cause void if opened sticker was gone and replaced with gamestop sticker. been without my ps3 for 3weeks now while a 3rd party attempts to repair it. I still think it was worth getting tho.

Not sure what you're really asking...games? additional functions?
If you have a 360 already and also grab a PS3 you can have the pleasure of sitting back and watching fanboi arguments...you're only real decision would be which version of the game do you purchase. Ask Chester's Liver about that, he kinda likes the option.

I did sort of phrase it poorly. I mean in terms of games, the library doesn't seem to be worth dropping the load of money on. Ever since buying a GameCube and expecting to have a big library (for the record, I have FIVE GAMES), I've decided not to invest in a system unless I know the library is going to justify the purchase. Aside from MGS4 and Resistance, I don't really know of any other games that I couldn't get on 360.

Unless you already have it on an Xbox 360, you have to get COD4. If you like driving games, the Gran Turismo series is great if you want the hyper-realistic simulator experience, or the Need for Speed games for a more arcade-type game. There's a new one calld Grid that looks good too.

Holy shit great list. The games I highlighted in red are ones I want. You should also mention that we will be getting an updated Bioshock with better graphics, newly designed Big Daddies and possibly more levels or something.
The games in blue are ones I own or have played. I also own Orange Box, GTA4, and COD4. Metal Gear is worth owning the system for. Without a fucking doubt. One of the best games ever and *agasp* it's not a FPS. Though it can be if you want it to be during many parts. That's what's great: You can play it any way you want. Super Rub-A-Dub rules. If you have a chick she will love it. Super Stardust is a great arcade style game with great HD graphics. Echochrome is a magnificent puzzle game. So original. I just bought the orange box and i really like it but I'm regretting not getting Ratchet and Clank or Uncharted.
It depends on what you want. If you like Final Fantasy, as I do, get this system. If you like MGS ge this system. Resistance 2 should have somegreat online play. Little Big Planet will fucking rule. My second third most anticipated game this year behind Metal Gear and GTA. Holy Fuck Twisted Metal for the PS3? Is it just updated or will it be a new game? Kill Zone won't live up the the hype but could still be really good. God of War 3 on that systems engine will fucking own.
