I've talked to people who have the same opinion and I still don't understand what they are seeing that I don't. While I'm not a big fan of the game (I really suck at it) any dope can see that its a game that allows people to enjoy themselves in a social atmosphere while exposing a younger generation to some of the classics. Mayer talks almost as if its competition for him.

my theory is that you can go from GH to competence on a real guitar, but it's harder to do the opposite if you know real guitar. if it creates more real guitar players, i'd say that's a good thing - unless they all turn into clones of good charlotte.

I will elaborate on HumpX's point. No one truly believes themselves to be talented because they are good at guitar hero. It's fun. A fantasy. Granted, it's healthier to learn a real instrument, but the point is this game isn't really taken seriously by anyone. It's a fantasy world, like all video games, and I think the players understand that. The air-guitaring reference is a great explanation of this game's purpose.

I think what John Mayer said was a bit douchey, but I also think some of the reactions in this thread are douchey. All I can say is that if you are a guitarist, why bash the game? Why be bothered by people playing it?

It might be unhealthy, but it's fun (as are most unhealthy things). Let the kids have fun. Who knows, maybe the game will make them want to pick up a real instrument.
