Microsoft's Robbie Bach has categorically denied a fresh round of rumours that the Xbox 360 will be supporting Blu-ray in the near future, but was less quick to scotch speculation that motion controls were on their way to the console.

Bach, who has the pleasure of overseeing the Entertainment & Devices Division, reiterated the company's stance on the technology in an interview with
SF Gate, emphasizing Microsoft's focus on delivering content over Xbox Live. "You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player," he added, "The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, "I am not going to pay extra for that."

One persistent rumour that looks to have more credence is the possibility of motion controls coming to the 360, with Bach conceding that it's an interesting technology whilst reiterating Microsoft's own innovations. "Look at things that are happening in music games and the massive popularity of things like Rock Band and Guitar Hero," said Bach, "Look at the phenomenon that is Xbox Live and what that's done and how that is changing the game space. If you were doing a canonical of what's new and exciting in this generation, you would put all three as the major trend of things that are happening in the marketplace. We participate in some of those and we don't participate in others. That's what defines the differences between us and Nintendo. We don't have any specific plans about what we are going to do technologically."

When further pushed on whether work was taking place on the technology, Bach said that "We have people working on all kinds of things."

my initial thought when I saw the thread title was "so?" .... but then I remembered I own a PS3 so that is why I didn't care...Blu-Ray is a fantastic way to watch a film... Until MGS4 its the only reason I use the PS3...so yeah it would suck not to have one...

Not a big surprise. Microsoft is hell bent on Digital Distribution. That way they can nickle and dime us to death. I'm getting tired of all the ads and shit on Live too. I thought the $50 a year was so I could get a smooth online experience and some free DLC occasionally. Instead it's full of ads and nothing worth a shit is free.

Oh well, fuck it. They'll just put Blu-Ray in the next XBOX and I'll have a PS3 long before then.

I've been hearing more complaints about the ads recently, and I really don't get it. They never bothered me in the slightest, and if anything, they only alerted me that something worth downloading was on the marketplace or when a certain game was coming out. It's not like they're popping up during gameplay or on a loading screen or something, they just sit on your dashboard, and it really doesn't bother me since I don't spend very much time on there anyway.

I see your complaint with DLC (why does EVERYTHING I want have to cost $10?) but the online experience is pretty smooth from what I've seen. Worth the money in my opinion. But even if they gave the option to turn the ads off if you were paying, I'd leave them on. I didn't find out until twenty minutes ago that the Civilization demo was out and that was thanks to a dashboard ad.

PS3 can keep its blue ray, except for metal gear and god of war the system is all japanese role playing games for the most part. I'll keep my gears, halo and Ninja Gaiden games. I'm not a 12 year old Asian kid, I don't want to play games where all the characters look like there from anime. I want to shoot things and I want my role playing games to look semi realistic with no children side kicks.

Until Blue-ray becomes a really big deal I could give two shits. No one I know owns one, they aren't affordable yet so no one I know will get one and I have over 300 DVD's that I just relatively bought so I'm not going to start buying them all over again. I barely watch DVD's at my own house anyway so what good is something I can't watch anywhere else. Maybe in 4 or 5 years it will be a must have but I don't think it is panning out that way.

If you have an HDMI Xbox they will already upscale to 1080. If you don't you could just grab a DVD player that does for about 50 bucks.

Upscaling isn't as good as Blue-ray but I'm not convinced Blue-ray is going to replace DVD's anytime soon. Times are tight and people don't want to spend the money and blue-ray player sales have tumbled big time.

I refuse to go less than 1080p and 8ms, even though Im probably going to have to keep price down. Ive seen how amazing a 46" 1080p TV looks, and I dont think I could settle for less.

At the moment, its between these three, in order of preference:

True. The game looked great but the memory thing was the final straw for me. It took like 15 fucking minutes to READ the first one. Not only is that a poor way to tell a story in a video game, it's painful on the eyes after a while. I'd rather they just sell me a book then try to get me to read all that shit in a video game.

Lost Odyssey was also like 3 or 4 discs right? That was kind of annoying too. MS needs to make the shift to Digital Distribution, have an option to install to HD, or come out with a Blu-Ray addition for gaming.

Blue Dragon right?

EDIT: Someone beat me to it. I got my PS3 for only a few reasons. One I am used to the controller and the product and I enjoy it. I have only played a XBOX twice in my life. Never a 360. I'm sure it's great.

One huge reason I chose a PS3 was the red ring of death. Not that I thought I'd get it but I had too many people I knew who had to ship their machines back to get a new one. That was a pain in the ass for them. Another reason was I'm not going to pay for fucking playing online. Maybe it's slightly better(?) but I have had NO problems with online play with Call of Duty and other games. GTA4 is a different story. EVERYONE was having problems. I think the GTA4 online was put together shitty. The online itself is great but the lobby or whatever you call it blows. One or two people leave a game before loading and you are sent back to in game of your single player game.

I don't care that XBOX gets GTA4 DLC. It's coming out in 2009. I'm just about done with that game anyways. I'm on the last mission and kkeep failing so I switched back to COD. If anything it pisses me off that ROCKSTAR gave only one console DLC. If they did that for PS3 i'd be equally as pissed. It's not fair to ppl who paid good money for the fucking game. I bought PS3 knowing i wasnt getting the DLC.

I got the PS3 for upcoming games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Killzone, the new Yakuza 3, and (tying this whole thing together) FF13. I don't really care for RPG's i never buy or rent them. Save for FF. I just have a soft spot for those games.

I was only tempted once to buy a 360 because of Bioshock. Gladly I didn't because it's coming to PS3 in Oct. with new content.

The Blu-Ray was not a bad reason to get it either. The Xbox has many pluses too. You guys are getting a lot of games I can't get. I would kill to get Gears of War on PS3. But I get Little Big Planet and MGS so it's all cool. The ranking shit for online is pretty cool to.
