Although he has not yet been signed to direct the sequel, Iron Man director Jon Favreau has been blogging who fans might expect to see menace Shellhead in Iron Man 2.
In a posting at his MySpace blog, Favreau revealed that "The Mandarin is Iron Man's nemesis and will be incorporated in the sequel. It's true that I am apprehensive about how he is to be presented. In the tech based modern world that we created for (Iron Man), a Fu Manchu style villain with magical/alien tech rings would seem out of place."
Favreau added, "There were early drafts of (Iron Man) where the Mandarin was the main villain, so we've already explored the character to some extent. I am curious to see how he has been treated in his latest books and how that might influence our direction."
He also said, "I've already mentioned War Machine and Mandarin. I have some ideas, but I really need to sit down with Downey and the Marvel guys before we say much more." And when asked about the chances of Obadiah Stane returning (SPOILER ALERT) despite his apparent death at the end of the first film, Favreau quipped, "Stane's death? Do characters ever really die in Marvel? Isn't it like a soap opera?"
When asked about this report that claimed the Hulk might pop up in Iron Man 2 (just as Tony Stark did in The Incredible Hulk), Favreau replied, "There are no plans to do so."
To be honest I'd rather see a Iron Man/Hulk movie then the Mandarin.

Dude, I've been drooling for a Mandarin appearance since I first heard they were doing an Iron Man movie, and I'm not even an Iron Man/Avengers fan. The only problem I can really see is who would play Mandarin? I was joking around with some guys I work with on Saturday and said the 6 Flags guy would make a great Mandarin.
"What? Iron Man break into castle? ONE FLAG!!!"
"We capture Iron Man? SIX FLAGS! MORE FLAGS, MORE FUN!!!"

Well you'll get your Hulk Ironman movie in 2010 just like the rest of us Good sir its called Avengers. That is if this movie studio Marvel has going for them doesnt implode by then. As for Ironman vs Manderine its not like the first movie didnt Knock us over the head with that what with the Five Rings reference that Terrorist Group was lackies for.

I think the Mandarin will be a behind the scenes type in this movie. Maybe only revealled fully in a post credits type thing. I expect this movie to incorporate the 'Armor Wars' storyline, where Iron Man discovers that several armored bad guys have been romping around using his stolen technology. Given that he goes apeshit against Shield in that story, it would be the perfect setup for the Avengers movie.

Don't know much about him except he has power rings and I think hes chinese. I agree with Napalm though, a hulk/ironman aka the avengers is what I would rather see.

What about War Machine ? Wasnt he a villain, too ?
I want Iron Man to have his li'l complete paralysis issue in the second movie. Now that would be cool.

I always thought War Machine was just another, more badass version of the Iron Man suit.

Robbie took over as Ironman for a time and hes always been kind of backup fire power for Ironman. As far as I know hes never been a villian.

I know more about him now that hes become a douchebag and started hunting down heros and putting them in jail

When Tony fell off the wagon hardcore, Rhodey took over as Iron Man. During his long rehab, Stark built a new company and began tinkering on an old school Mark I suit as therapy. Rhodey went a little psycho because the armor wasn't set for his brain waves and he felt guilty taking over in the first place. Tony put on the Mark I suit and kicked his ass with it.
Obadiah Stane blew up Tony's new company shortly after the fight, killing one of his friends and severely injuring Rhodey. Stark then went and grabbed the new modern suit of armor he'd been working on and fought Stane to the death. This was the first new set of 'regular' armor in almost 20 years, but it stunk and started the current pattern where they change it every couple of years.
One of those changes was the War Machine armor, which Tony wore briefly before handing over to Rhodey when he faked his own death.(Hey, I didn't write the shit). When Tony recovered, he built another new suit, and Rhodey kept the War Machine armor and identity. He was pissed at Tony for keeping him out of the loop during his fake death, and Iron Man and War Machine did duke it out at least once.
There, I just summarized Iron Man 169 - 310 in three paragraphs. If you have any questions past that, I can't help you much. I lost interest right after the IM/WM fight and didn't even finish Vol. 1, which ended less than two years later.

So he was a semi-villian, in the sense that he would only go after Ironman but would eventually be a good guy once he got it out of his system.

He wanted to do Avengers but with the tight timeframe there's no way. I think part of his deal for IM2 is a producer credit on Avengers, though. He implied that he's going to be 'supervising' Iron Man's participation in the other movies. That will be a must, as the Avengers movie will undoubtedly be like 'Iron Man 2.5' and lead directly into Iron Man 3. I'm guessing they'll give Favreau 3 years on that one to coordinate the Iron Man/War Machine fight that will likely be the climax.
