AMC's Mad Men season 2 begins on July 27. I finished the first season in two days, it's a great show. It's about advertising agents in the early 1960s. Also features Christina Hendricks in that oddly sexy late 50s/early 60s clothing.

I liked the show last season but felt that the creators were too in love with the era, if you will, especially with the constant smoking and drinking. We get it, the men lived hard in those days and didnt know the consequences, etc. Don's whole Armin Tanzarian thing was kind of weird but at least makes him an interesting character.
Anyway, looking forward to the new season, especially since the show was really good the last four episodes or so. And Christina Hendricks is sexy as fuck, too.

There is no such thing as being "too in love with the era." Just ask Ant. Lingerolongero.

We get it, the men lived hard in those days and didnt know the consequences, etc. I was feeling the same way in the early episodes. Where it was "ooo look how different it was back then!" But as the show sort of "grew up," I felt that that part of it fell more into the background and it became more about the characters and stories.

I watched the first few episodes and while the acting was good, I felt it was too over the top. We get it, they smoke a lot and the girls have no rights and have to be whores. But then it went and won all these awards so I feel I should watch the entire season.

Nope, the kid wasnt mentioned, although there was a brief moment with her and Pete where he asked her if she ever wanted kids, and Peggy didnt respond, and he said something like , 'See, thought so'. Completely oblivious, and as far as her weight loss goes, there are rumors around the office, with Pete joking that she went to a fat farm. Other than that nothing else was mentioned.

Oh I'm loving the season, I just don't like to come to a thread just to say "Wasn't that awesome?!" It works for 24, not for Mad Men. Another thing about MM is that I am always so engrossed in the universe that I don't really know what to say. The tone, the characters, it really feels like I'm watching these people and not watching a show about these people.

The first season seemed to have the undercurrent of what Don's secret past was, and once it was revealed the show has taken a step back for me. I agree that the reveal between Don and Peggy was cool, because it shows something that occured that we weren't aware of, but outside of that this season seems to be flat.
Question I have is why did Don care about that girl so much to help cover up her past? Because he knew she was devoted to her work and could help him or because he really cares? He makes an effort not to show he cares in front of the other guys....but does trust her to keep a secret...and now we know why.
All in all I think the show is well produced and well written (outside of a handful of episodes that seemed to be completely from left field) but I'll keep watching.

Yea, I was wondering about Don's apparent connection with Peggy. Maybe he sensed a kindred spirit in her, especially once he seemingly learned of what happened with the baby. He probably sensed her need to forget it and move on, much like he tried to do after the Armin Tanzarian incident in Korea.
Last night's episode got me thinking how much the two of them have in common, too. Both Don and Peggy seem to be very sad people, depressed and emotionally withdrawn to the point of indifference. Also, maybe Im reaching a bit here, but personally I see alot of similarities between Don and Tony Soprano, for many of the reasons I just stated. Also, throw in the fact that both are serial cheaters, essentially living two lives, and youve got what look like mirror images of each other. I wonder if Weiner was purposely going for that, him being a writer on The Sopranos for so long.

'Mad Men' Stars Have No Contracts
There may not be any more "Mad Men" if deals aren't cut soon.
The popular cult series on AMC about the world of advertising in the early 60s is at a crossroads. Producer Lionsgate and network AMC not only have no contract with series creator Matthew Weiner, they don't have deals with the cast as well.
Whoops! There was a flurry of activity this morning as Lionsgate and AMC announced to the wire services that they wanted Weiner and the show back and were trying to make a deal.
But the reality is, the network has no agreements with stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery, or any of the other cast members. Hamm and Slattery were each nominated for Emmys this year, and Hamm won the Golden Globe last January (although that's not so hard to get if you're persistent and have a catering truck, but that's another story).
Hamm in particular poses a problem since he's turned into a huge break-out star. If "Mad Men" ended right now, the 36-year-old actor could go to movies and easily become the next George Clooney. This puts AMC and Lionsgate in a strange position to renegotiate Hamm's contract. It's going to cost them more than they've probably ever paid for anything.
As for Weiner and the show itself, if Lionsgate and AMC don't come up with the right deal, there's always the chance that "Mad Men" could wind up on another network. HBO would pay just about anything to take it given their disappointing schedule right now. It's unclear whether Weiner's original contract prohibited him from moving the show to his old stomping grounds-he wrote and produced on "The Sopranos"- but there are plenty of other options including F/X, Showtime and the major networks.
Meanwhile, fans of "Mad Men" are on tenterhooks to see what happens next to Hamm's character, Don Draper. In last week's episode, Draper went AWOL in Palm Springs, Calif. with a girl he just met. As viewers know, Draper is already living what seems to be a "double life" and that his real name is Dick Whitman. I'm told the next two episodes satisfying our curiosity, and that most of the show's loose ends will be tied up when the season ends - in case there aren't any more.

I think it was AMC's first original show, and the creators had previously worked with HBO. They may have different hiring rules for series than the broadcast networks.
The show just won the Emmy for Best Drama, so AMC won't let it go. The cast may not be signed for years, but the cast seems happy. Many articles I've read about Mad Men includes the actors talking what a great time they have, how unique the show and is and how happy they are to be a part of it. They won't want to walk away, and AMC really doesn't have any reason not to give them all raises if they ask for it. Bryan Craston won best actor for AMC's other original series, the network should be really happy right now. Money is the only reason I think the actors would leave.
