ANIMATION
6 TOY STORY (1995)
8 SHREK (2001)
10 FINDING NEMO (2003) I might give it to Toy Story because it was one of the first but Shrek and Finding Nemo? No way. Any of the Brad Bird Pixars were better than Nemo; and even though I don't care to see them in theaters I think Wall*E looks amazing visually. Fantasia might be the best animated film of all time.
GANGSTER No Miller's Crossing? That's what I can't get behind. After the G*F*ers that's probably my fourth favorite gangster film.
ROMANTIC COMEDY
2 ANNIE HALL (1977)
3 IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) I just recently watched those two movies. Both are actually very funny. Maybe I'd throw His Girl Friday up on that list.
God damn it, I honestly thought I'd have more to complain about on those lists. I really like most of those films.

"Romantic Comedy" notwithstanding why do they include such minor genres as gangster and courtroom drama but not comedy?
Dr. Strangelove
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Apartment
Duck Soup
Big Lebowski
Spinal Tap
Blazing Saddles
Animal House
Clerks
Modern Times

Once again horror movies get no respect. Like Atomic Fireball pointed out, they rank romantic comedies but not flat out comedies? My two favorite genres not even represented. Fuck the AFI.

I'm just annoyed how little respect horror movies get. Granted, some of the shittiest movies ever made are most likely horror films, and I have suffered through many pieces of shit in my time, but to me there is nothing more fun to watch than a well made horror film, and no film community more loyal than horror fans (besides those Sci-Fi dorks :)). No respect I tell ya.

No respect I tell ya. When you're in your early teenage years, the downstairs part of your local video store's horror section was the shit. I don't think slickness of a DVD will ever have that weird coolness of the heavy VHS of a really cheaply done schlocky 1980s horror movie.
Now admit I pwned you with the comedy thing.

Done. I'm even more retarded because I now remember watching the special on TV.
I also just had to throw together a list of some of my personal favorite horror films growing up, in no particular order:
Re-Animator
The Shining
The Exorcist
Dawn Of The Dead (original)
Return Of The Living Dead
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Dead/Alive
Fright Night
Suspiria
The Thing (remake)

The non recognition of Horror movies, is like the way the music industry ignored metal for so long. If movies ever decide to acknowledge the horror genre it'll be like when the the Grammys gave the metal award to Jethro Tull instead of Metallica.

I'm with you on the Scarface remake. It may be the worst movie with the most memorable scenes ever made. Pacino's acting is almost comical, and as a whole it's pretty boring.
Another Western that should be on that list is Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time In The West. If you haven't seen that one, do, even if you aren't big on Westerns. It's his masterpiece, although it is overshadowed by his Eastwood westerns.

ANIMATION
Finding Nemo was ok, but Monsters Inc. and Rattatoui was better.
GANGSTER
Godfather II should have been ranked ahead of Goodfellas. Scarface is overrated and I think The Departed should have made the list over it.
SPORTS
Raging Bull is the most overrated sports movie in history. It was a decent film but no way should it be at the top. I think The Natural should have made the list but I’m not sure what should be dropped in order to get in on. You could also make an argument for Cinderella Man and/or Seabiscuit.
MYSTERY
L.A. Confidential maybe? (I seem to like that movie more than most people though)
ROMANTIC COMEDY
I have nothing to add here except that when I quickly read the category and thought The Philadelphia Story was actually Philadelphia.
COURTROOM DRAMA
Speaking of Philadelphia, I think that should have made this list. I certainly would have definitely put it above In Cold Blood. Great choice for number one though.

I might give it to Toy Story because it was one of the first but Shrek and Finding Nemo? No way. Any of the Brad Bird Pixars were better than Nemo; and even though I don't care to see them in theaters I think Wall*E looks amazing visually. Fantasia might be the best animated film of all time.
Toy Story was a perfect movie, hit all the right notes story wise, was visually stunning (and everything was designed so perfectly even though the details aren't quite as rich as current CGI the look is so cohesive that it still holds up visually), was a huge leap forward technologically, AND was the first mainstream animated picture to really break free of the Disney Fairytale Musical convention with any real critical / financial success. It belongs.
I would take out Nemo and Shrek as well - and I'd probably slip in 2 of the 3 Brad Bird films somewhere in there. Incredibles definitely, not sure on wether I'd put in Ratatouille or Iron Giant. Unless Who Framed Roger Rabbit would be considered Animation on their part, then it'd be The Incredibles and WFRR in the Top 10, otherwise I'd put WFRR in the top ten fantasy films of all time. If it wasn't for Speilberg and Disney having a pissing contest later on, that character would still be pretty popular... heck what little merchandise they still make still sells like crazy.

Good call on GBU, totally missed that. Original Scarface- maybe I'd put on list, not remake. As I said Miller's fucking Crossing.

Yes, if this was a generic crap list. Raging Bull for the win.

L.A. Confidential maybe? (I seem to like that movie more than most people though) Of that list, Usual Suspects is definitely the weakest. A Shot in the Dark?
COURTROOM DRAMA

The incredibles is PIXAR's best movie and I'm right with you on The Natural. I really think it has to do on what sport you enjoy the most, because I've never liked boxing so boxing movies (Rocky, Raging Bull, Cinderella Man) do very little for me.

Akira should have been on that animation list. It was a international hit with a strong story line years later. Not to mention it was hand drawn in the same fashion as Fantasia. Definatly not a top 5, but deserves to be in the top 10 somewhere as influential animation.

Bring in the Fail Dozer. You are correct sir......
What constitutes an american film, the money/company who sponsors the film? LOTR was made by a foreign director, 90% foreign cast, not american union supported, and shot in a foreign country. Star Wars was also shot in England, but did have an American director.

I was thinking about something the other day, and it was inspired by the AFI's mystery category. I thought I would pose the question to see what you guys thought.
The Usual Suspects is the most recent mystery on that list and it came out in 1995. I think some of us agree, that even though it wasn't on the list, the last great mystery was 1997's L.A. Confidental. Do you think because of the chance of spoilers and blogs, that the internet has killed off the chances of there ever being a great mystery movie. I mean when I can find out the ending for crap like the Happening, what chance does a good mystery stand?

The Sixth Sense was kept secret for the most part. I personally don't read reviews before I see a movie, I just look @ the rotten tomatoes percentage so I don't have surprises ruined.
