So, I'm looking to get a new heatsink for my PC with an ASUS P5PE-VM motherboard (LGA775 chipset)....who makes decent CPU cooler...no neon, no lcds, just cooling power and quiet would be nice. Another nice thing would be if I don't need to take the motherboard out.
I figured, who would know more than you guys and still give an unbiased (salesperson) opinion?

I`ve heard these work really well: http://www.bcchardware.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=3702&Itemid=40&limit=1&limitstart=2
I use Thermalright Heatsinks, but mobo must be removed.

What kind of cooler do you have now? How is it mounted (screws or those stupid push pins)?
I was going to do a Thermalright but there is no way I am pulling this board out.

Or you can go all out and get a Scythe Orichi:

You can get pretty fancy with the fans and heat sinks.

I tend to use the off the shelf stuff like Zalman (I think that's how it's spelled), unless I'm building some complicated gaming machine for a friend, in which case I go with the Cooler Master type of products with liquid cooling and stuff.
We need more info, how hot are you expecting this box to be? But a good rule of thumb is that there's no such thing as too much cooling for electronic equipment.

Spend the 450$ and go watercooled. Koolance makes a case that is so quiet and so great.

There are some cheap ones here, but since you get what you pay for, these probably don't compare to the ones above.

I just use the stock fan that comes with the proccessor. Rather than overclock, I just get a faster proccessor or video card.

I really don't know.....the stock Intel one that came with it.
As far as cooling it.....I just want it to be 30-35C idle....40-45 C with a load (I'm not overclocking)....is this unrealistic?

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (LGA 775) seems to be getting a lot of positive reviews....thoughts?

Freezer 7 PRO is OK for dual core, not enough for quad and it can get a bit loud. I switched from one of those to a Xigmatek HDT-S1283. Cools extremely well and is a lot quieter than AC F7. It is a 120mm, so it's a bit on the large side.

I am getting that with the stock Asus cooler that is in my HP PC. But, I did pull it and clean the OEM crap paste from the heatsink and CPU. I applied some Arctic Silver 7 on the heatsink and put it back together. Right now, my core temps are 33, 35, 35, and 36. I have two browser tabs open and am watching TV in a window via Media Center. The air conditioning is on, so it's about 70F in here. My temps were almost 10 degrees higher before I pulled the heatsink and used the AS7.
Newegg has this cooler. It appears to be identical to the one I have.

I just shipped out a system with a core2duo and a round Thermaltake cooler. Nothing fancy. The case does have a 120mm fan directly behind the CPU and the PS actually above and to the left of the cpu. There is an lcd temperature display on the front of the case that reads about 3-5C lower than the BIOS reports, so I was able to keep an eye on it. It was running during burn-in at no more than 38 C, at idle it was sitting around under 30 C. (adjusting up - the lcd never read higher than 32 or 33 and at the low end about 26 C)
Of course the lower wattage AMD systems I've built recently run at 20 C with factory coolers.

Nobody did, but that is the usual motivation unless they bought an OEM proccessor. I guess you could try for less sound, but that is so marginal with the new fans. I can't even hear mine over the the case fans.

I have a Zalman. I like it because it is not attached with those fucking stupid ass pegs pushed through the motherboard. Its has an anchor bolted to the mother board and super awesome clip system that holds is rock solid tight on the processor. It is also silent and cools like a mofo , like nothing I have ever used. You have to remove the MB to install though.

I can fully endorse the Thermaltake "Big Typhoon" CL-P0114 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106061) -- this thing saved my CPU's life. I have a Prescott chip which pushed 140F with stock heatsink and after installing this it rarely goes over 105F during light usage.

105F with an aftermarket cooler???? What kind of case do you have. My old duo core that I had OC'd never rose above 70F under heavy load, and this quad core I have now is usually around 55F under heavy load. Both of which I had my cooler on.

Prescott chips were discontinued for their heat issues. Lots of power for cheap, but 100 is considered cool for these.

if the chips could handle it, that's great, but for me it'd be my mobo I'd be worried about

I'm thinking of going withthe Thermaltake CL-P0370 TMG i1 (once I do some measuring to make sure it fits in the case.
And Artic Silver, of course.

Arctic Silver is the best. Remember, don't use a ton... I usually apply a small dot and then spread it over the processor with a razor blade. Keeps my P4-3Ghz at 100 F under heavy work (like when compiling code or playing graphics intensive games). And I've just got a cheap OTC Thermaltake heatsink + fan.

I just built a new machine with a Thermaltake Blue Orb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106069 . I was originally shocked with how big and heavy it was, but it's easily the best cooler I've used, it's silent and keeps the cpu (AMD 5000+ Black Edition, running at 3Ghz) around 36, it'd be cooler if it weren't for the other 4 boxes in the room raising the ambient temp :(

Are you running your PC in a freezer? How do you keep your CPU cooler than the ambient air temperature?
I think you mean Celsius (C), not Fahrenheit (F).
I have our A/C set to 74 degrees (F) and right now my Q6600 is running at 35-37 (C) across all cores which equates to 99-100 (F). I have three browser tabs open, Windows MC in a window for TV, and a Citrix app. The highest mine ever gets under an extremely intensive computing load is about 51-52 (C).

Excelent point. I can tell you this much
1 - he keeps his house cold (I've had that conversation with him before)
2 - CPU temp is different from Core temps. CPU temp is read by a sensor on the CPU casing and is not always accurate. Core temps are usualy closer to true numbers.
My Q9550 clocked to 3.6Ghz currently idle at 34-36c across the four cores. Everest is showing CPU temp at 23c, which in no way is true since the ambient is 26c.

you're right, I meant Celsius.
When I'm talking computing load for mine, it's usually a game running, some Adobe program going, along with all the other shit I've got going. When it's just idling, it's around 30 degrees, depending on the time of year (summer warmer, winter freezing)

Liked it until I saw it doesn't work with the LGA775.
Ah well....
I could do without the neon anyway.

Ease of installation depends on the motherboard you have, don't go by 1 idiot's review. Regardless, you'd probably have to take the mobo out though. :icon_neut

My mobo is the Asus P5B(775 chipset), and if you have patience and some luck, you can get the cooler in without removing the mobo, but it is much easier to do it with the mobo out.

What makes you think you need a new heatsink? Are you overclocking? What are your temperatures now? Within reason, heat is not what kills a CPU, its voltage (which should only even come up while overclocking).
Also, FYI Arctic Silver is now middle-of-the road as far as thermal compounds go. The top of the pile is Arctic Cooling MX-2 (I can attest to its quality) and IC Diamond 7 Carat.
