Windows for free is very helpful too. I use spybot, I use NORTON CORPORATE version anti-virus. Nothing beats it.


Zonealarm is a great firewall program.

Microsoft also has some free Power Tools (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp) that come in handy.
I especially like Tweak UI (http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&qu=tweak+ui&view=en-us) .

If you have a high-speed internet connection, a router or a firewall would help against privacy intrusions.

A program I am quite fond of is FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40 (http://download.com.com/3000-2086-10219611.html?tag=lst-0-1). I've been using it for some time now and am pleased with it.
