Our ears perked up last week when we saw Capcom had filed the title Mega Man 9 with Australia's Classification Review Board (down under's version of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board). It's been over ten years since we were blessed with a proper new Mega Man game. Now it looks like the next entry in the series is set for Nintendo's WiiWare service.
Fansite The Mega Man Network has gotten its hands on a couple (blurry) scans from the next issue of Nintendo Power. The screenshots look like the classic 8-bit Mega Man we all know and love. Capcom is apparently going old school with this one. Mega Man Network lists the following robot bad guys:
* Magma Man
* Galaxy Man
* Jewel Man
* Concrete Man
* Hornet Man
* Plug Man
* Tornado Man
* Splash WOMAN (although this isn't confirmed, yet)
Mega Man 9 is being developed by Inti Creates, a team made up of former Capcom devs that brought us the first three Mega Man X games, Mega Man Zero, and the Mega Man ZX series.

It's odd, I played Mega Man 1-4, but never played 5-8 or X2 through whatever. So I've never played the majority of Mega Man games, but still I'm fond of Mega Man.
Here's hoping this game doesn't blow.

Way back in the days gamers would shell out $40 or more for a new NES game. Imagine the uproar if Capcom tried to ask for the same price nowadays with the upcoming Mega Man 9 game for WiiWare. There would be rioting on the streets outside Capcom’s offices across the world as otaku and geeks dressed like the blue bomber expressed their outrage!
The good news is that Japanese Famitsu magazine have now revealed the price will be 1000 Wii Points or $10 to our American readers. Check out the Google translation for yourselves. In the translation you will see this interesting line:
Also, Wii software as a unique element, adding downloadable content delivery will also be included.
Extra downloadable content for Mega Man 9 sounds like a great thing to help maintain interest in the game once it is completed. The question is, what could it be? New weapons, bosses, playable characters or something even cooler?
There will be the usual crowd who complain that this should cost 500 Wii points like an NES game on the Virtual Console, but remember those games have already paid off their development costs when they were originally launched. In that light 1000 Wii points is looking pretty fair for one of the most anticipated WiiWare games to date.
Japan is getting Mega Man 9 in September. We expect to know more about the North American release dates during E3 next week. Watch this space!

Love the Megaman franchise, I think they're doing great by resurrecting it.
Specifically resurrecting it in 8 bit format. That's how we love him, we don't need him to be a ultra hi-tech 3-d shooter, we want platforms, puzzles, cool-ass weapons, and for his adorable little mouth to open with every jump.

I like the old school gaming but I would have rather this Mega Man gone with the 16bit look rather than the 8bit.

IGN had a pre-E3 breakthrough today with a new Mega Man 9 video and some new snippets of news.
Anyone who has been around this site for the last week or so will know how stoked we are about Mega Man 9. Only the most cynical of gamers could fail to love the idea of a brand new 8-bit NES style Mega Man, with all new levels.
The first bit of news is contrary to the denials we have heard, it is now confirmed that Mega Man 9 will NOT be WiiWare exclusive! It will also be sold on XBLA and PSstore. Boooooo!!!
Mega Man 1 & 2 are confirmed to be coming to the Virtual Console for North America soon also. It's about time really, Europe has had both of them for ages on VC!
Mega Man 9 features 50 new enemies and bosses to battle, according to Capcom. It will also sport an online leaderboard ranking system where you'll be able to track your score and time against other gamers.
Check out the new video, this is all looking pretty awesome:

In a recent interview with MTV Multiplayer, the creator of the Mega Man series, Keiji Inafune and his partner in crime, Hironobu Takeshita, producer of Mega Man 9 reveal a few more nuggets of information about this upcoming retro styled game.
Here are some of the choice bits of the interview:
Multiplayer: When you guys decided to make “Mega Man 9″ in this style, I assume nobody at Capcom had made a game in this style in a long time. So I’m wondering what it was like to re-learn to make 8-bit games or if there were people in the studio doing this on the side? How were those skills rediscovered?
Keiji Inafune, creator, Mega Man: Making an 8-bit game like this, it’s been a long time since even I’ve done something like that. But there are a lot of staff at Capcom that remember how to make that sort of thing, We used a company called Inti Create to help us on this. It’s comprised of former Capcom staff members and people who worked on NES 8-bit games. They’re really into 8-bit games and wanted to make a game like this. So, we had all the expertise we could want to make a game like this.
Multiplayer: I remember a lot of the 8-bit games I played on the NES were really, really hard. I was wondering how hard “Mega Man 9″ is.
Takeshita: Well, we made this game based on the old games. So, as you could imagine, it’s just as hard as those old games. And if you haven’t played those games in a while, it might be even harder. The whole point is: you play this, you die a few times, but you keep trying and you get past the difficult spots. That’s the pleasure gamers get from the challenge and overcoming those challenges. And we felt by creating a game that challenges players, it will give them greater reward when they beat those challenges.
http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2008/07/keiji_inafune_reveals_more_about_mega_man_9
So stoked for this, love the Mega Man franchise, and the company did a great thing when they decided to stay with the original 8-Bit format, perfect for the Wii Virtual Console format, I'm not sure how it will be on XBLA, although I have both systems, I'll definitely be getting it on the one it belongs on, The Wii.

Capcom seems to be taking this trip down memory lane with their upcoming WiiWare Mega Man 9 game quite seriously. Not only will the game have 8-bit sound effects and visuals, but now Capcom is saying that this new Mega Man title will also have the same flicker that plagued many a game during the 8-bit era. About the only thing left for Capcom to do would be to require the player to jiggle the Wii Remote much the same way NES carts had to be jiggled to get the games to boot up on the loose contacts inside the NES cartridge slot. (We hope they don't take it quite that far, however)
Here's a snippet of the interview Gamasutra did with Capcom producer Hironobu Takeshita regarding their upcoming Mega Man 9 WiiWare title.
Gamasutra: You talked about how people were trying to graphically exceed the capabilities of the Famicom, but what about the temptation to exceed some other capabilities, such as flicker, slowdown, sprite limits, and stuff like that? Was it really hard to get people to stay within the confines of what they could have done, if this had come out after Mega Man 6 in 1993?
HT: Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game. In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot.
In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel.
It's clear that this title is really shaping up to be quite the trip down memory lane for 8-bit era fans. As usual, we'll have any more new developments on Mega Man 9 as they become available.

I think its really neat that they're deciding to keep the flickering and other glitches in the game. It goes to show you how devoted capcom is to their older fanbase. Finally someone in the gaming industry is thinking of the original fans, rather than just trying to market to a newer audience.

For Japan
We are getting ever closer to the release of the greatly anticipated Mega Man 9 on WiiWare. Capcom have officially dated it’s release as the 24th of September in Japan now as confirmed by Famitsu. For the reasonable asking price of 1000 Wii points we are all in for a treat with this retro sequel.
Rumours have been flying around about the American release date on WiiWare, it looks likely that it will be released two days earlier on the 22nd of September, but do not hold us to that! If Mega Man 2 on the Virtual Console comes out this coming Monday on the 15th then this will be a good indication if this rumour is true or not.
Our best guess is that Europe will get Mega Man 9 on the 26th September on the scheduled WiiWare update day. If we get any concrete information of course, you will be the first to know!

The wait is almost over! Capcom has announced the US release of their highly-anticipated Mega Man 9 WiiWare title this coming Monday, September 22. This also means that WiiWare will see a release of the game before any other download service on the competing consoles.
As if this good news wasn't enough, Capcom has also announced a bit of downloadable content for Mega Man 9 in the form of the Proto Man character. On October 6th, gamers can shell out an additional 200 Wii Points for this new character. Proto Man comes with a host of new game play features including:
* The ability to slide and charge his shots up
* Can deflect some bullets with his shield
* Bullets striking Proto Man push him back twice as far as Mega Man
* His charge shot is interrupted when he takes a hit
* No Rush adapters as he has his own set of adapters
While we're not sure how many gamers will want to shell out an additional 200 Wii Points for one character, it's definitely nice to see Capcom at least making it available. Who knows, maybe this will lead to even more Mega Man 9 downloadable content in the future.
We'll have more Mega Man 9 information as it becomes available. We'll also have the full Mega Man 9 review early next week when it's released to the WiiWare service.

For those of you out there who just can't get enough Mega Man 9 goodness, it seems the fun will continue. In fact, if you're one of those who thinks Mega Man 9 just isn't tough enough, Capcom is about to remedy that situation.
On October 6th you can pony up 200 Wii Points and download the Proto Man downloadable content. You'll then have full access to the yellow-scarfed character and all of his new game play moves.
Using Proto Man opens up a brand new mode that will allow you to experience the game in a slightly new way. Not only will you get to take control of Proto Man, but there are other small and unique changes that you'll notice as you play through the game again.
For starters you can't use Proto Man to achieve worldwide rankings or beat any of the game's challenges. What you can do is use Proto Man's unique game play moves, which proves to be a double-edged sword. The good news is Proto Man can now use his slide move to quickly slide under certain enemies and he can also charge up his shot for an added firepower burst. The bad news is that Proto Man takes double the damage of Mega Man and will get thrown back twice as far when he takes a hit thus making enemy encounters all the more tricky. You also will not be able to purchase special items like additional "E" and "M" tanks in the store. As you can imagine, this definitely ups the ante in the difficulty department.
According to Mark Bozon at IGN, using Proto Man does add a unique twist to an already amazing game and he seemed to really appreciate the unique game play twists Proto Man brought to the game, although he did emphasize that it does take some time to get used to controlling Proto Man as the overall feel is quite different from that of Mega Man.
If you're looking to add some replay value to Mega Man 9, this Proto Man content could be just what you need. And at only 200 Wii Points, it seems like a small price to pay to make an already outstanding game even better.
Check out a video of Proto Man in action:
