Writer Frank Miller and director Zack Snyder have been signed by Warner Bros. to develop a follow-up to the CGI-heavy historical actioner 300, we're hearing from Variety today.

It's not clear whether the film will be a prequel, spin-off or sequel, although the conclusion of the original would seemingly rule out the latter option.

Apparently, Miller is currently writing the graphic novel on which the film will be based, with Snyder waiting to see how his effort turns out before definitely committing.

A spokesman for Legendary Pictures, who will co-finance the film, said: "The vision of Frank Miller's universe that Zack Snyder brought to the screen in 300 is unlike anything ever seen before. We want to be certain that the story originates with Frank and be as compelling as the first."

Bizarrely, the announcement is the third greeks-set sword-and-sandals epic announced in the past few days, with Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans remake and Tarsem's The War of Gods all also rumbling into production.

I would be weary of this, forcing a guy to make a comic rather then let it flow from him naturally might turn out badly.

I was about to say the same thing. I LOVED 300. Probably the most bad ass "guy movie" in recent years.

At least they are letting it all come from him, though, instead of doing the normal Hollywood bullshit of trying to recreate something they know people like just for a quick buck.

I'm sure he will make a decent comic to base the film off of but 300 was based around Millers love for the movie "the 300 spartans" he saw as a kid. I don't know if he will have the same drive that made 300 so cool. Its Frank Miller so I'll keep hoping its good but I have alot of dout.

I love Frank Miller and he's rocking now. But I'm not all that familiar with his work that haven't made it to the big screen.

But for those that know him, has Miller done anything that is shit? Or does he have the midas touch?

Ronin was good, his Daredevil run was considered epic from all accounts, 300 was good, the dark knight strikes again and the dark knight returns remain two of my favorite comics ever and his run on robocop was pretty good. I'm sure hes had a few shit bombs here and there though but people don't talk about them much.

My first reaction to this is just NO. 300 was a stand alone movie, and it was fantastic and badass at the same time. There is no need for a fucking sequel, what are they going to do raise Leonidas from the dead.

I don't see how they could spin off of 300. This doesn't make sense to me.

Hmm, could be interesting if set during a different era of Spartan history, possibly during the Peloppenisian War (sp).

I hope they don't fuck this one up. 300 was such a great movie by itself.

Not sure how they could do a spin-off unless it was, as someone else said, a different era in Spartan history or maybe do something with younger leonidas. Another idea would be to do the next one from the other side, base it on Persian invasion perspective.

Director Zack Snyder has been blabbing about the recently-rumoured 300 follow-up.

He told IESB that he's waiting for original author Frank Miller to write and draw a new graphic novel set in the world. Only when that's finished will he begin writing a script for the movie, before directing the project.

Plot-wise, Snyder said the novel will take place between the Battle of Thermopylae (the main focus of the original movie) and the Battle of Plataea right at the end of the film.

The film will explore the year-long period between these battles, with the valour of the 300 Spartans inspiring the Greek kingdoms to unite in the face of the might Persian army.

I can see a sequel where the other greeks come and defeat the persians.

How great would it be if the sequel was just one long camera shot of the corpses from the first movie for two and a half hours?

Hmm, so I guess its possible that the one eyed narrator from the first one may have a big part in this one.
