A discussion in today's Ron and Fez Listening Thread got the old TV show, Mystery Science Theater 3000, on my mind again. It was a great old show that used to air on TV about a janitor named Joel, who is kidnapped by two scientists named Dr. Clayton Forrester and his assistant Frank, and sent into space on a ship called, "The Satellite of Love". While on the ship, so he's not lonely, he builds robots, that he calls: Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, (among a few others I think). While on the ship, he is forced by the scientists to watch horrible B-Movies in a theater with the robots, and that's the basis for the show, they watch and joke around in the theater about the crappy films, among the running storyline outside of watching the movies. It's a really great forgotten show. If you haven't seen it, check out the episodes on YouTube, each episode is long, so they're mostly broken into 10 parts.

But, I was wondering, for fans like myself, what are your favorite episodes?

For me, I really like:

-Space Mutiny
-Master Ninja
-The Gamera Movies
-PumaMan

I Accuse My Parents ftmfw. Best episode ever.

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians is another classic. Pod People. Manos of course. In November it's the 20th anniversary of the show. Still one of the funniest things ever put on TV. Time Chasers. It's easy to divide it into JOEL episodes, CC Mike and Sci-fi Mike. And if you've never seen the shorts, you must immediately. Cheating is the best short; Mr. B. Natural; Once Upon a Honeymoon; Design for Dreaming; The Home Ec Story. So much hilarity. Go to youtube and watch it.

Also, go to rifftrax (http://www.rifftrax.com) and watch them. Like the show, the shorts (as well as some of the films) are piss-your-pants funny.

My favorite one was the Santa Claus movie from Mexico (Lupita...no.....), where Santa has a tangle wit the Debil...I also love any of the short films. I have the two "Shorts" VHS tapes, and I'll still put them in from time to time....if I can find a working VCR.

EDIT: SHIT! I forgot about MITCHELL! featuring the baby-oiled Joe Don Baker......genius. MITCHELL!

Girl in Gold Boots is another classic. I tend to like the movies which are more "real" based over the sci-fi-/horror ones. Ed Wood's Violent Years, The Rebel Set and The Beatniks are some more of those types.

Red Zone Cuba might fall under weirdest depressing films. Eegah. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

So many great episodes.

Since you seem to be VERY well versed in the ways of MST3k, I have to ask you. I've had a MST moment stuck in my head since the Thanksgiving marathon in 1994(?). It was from a short, and actually, I think it WAS from "Cheating"...there's a kid lying in bed, guilt ridden, and there's a bad effect where he envisions his teacher's head hovering over his bed, flashing back to something she told him, and Crow says "Oh, Hi Ms. (whateverhernamewas)! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, GET IT AWAY!!!!!!!"

Does that even make sense? As far as I'm concerned, that was the funniest moment on the series, yet I can't figure out why.

"Heart's pounding...Mitchell! Arteries clogging...Mitchell!"

there's this other one, i think it was called Pod People. it was a bad E.T. ripoff about these aliens that looked like Snuffy from Sesame Street if he was played by a midget. it was filmed in a foreign country and then dubbed into English. the best is when Joel and the bots act out scenes from the movie during the skit segments.

All time favorite was "High School Big Shot" The lines were dead on. Everytime I watch it I still laugh.

Manos is a very close second. Watching it is like touching a cold sore with your tounge.

I have the Rifftrax for all three Star Wars prequels downloaded. Phantom Menace is pretty funny, but ATOC is still hard to sit though, even with the help.

I'm thinking of getting some Rifftrax, but are they very hard to sync up? It seems like it would be frustrating getting the timing just right.

I noticed they have a Star Wars Holiday Special, and since that is such an awful movie, I really want to see how they shit on it.

Nope, they give you instructions on how to sync it up, and also, during the rifftrax every once in awhile a voice will speak a line from the movie so you can tell if you're still synced up. I use my Inno for it, and it works perfectly.

Still looking to leech some Rifftrax from anyone that has any. All I gots are Roadhouse and the 5th Element, which I'm more'n happy to trade.

My favorite was when they reviewed a crappy movie that had such a small budget, that they spliced in space battle footage from the old Battle star Galacta series. What was funny, the robots tried recreate the final battle in the movie with the stations escape pods. Joel never even knew there were escape pods. Were there any more? No, just the two, and the robots smashed them into scrap playing bumper cars. I think it was called Space Mutinty. These two "supposedly" futuristic cars were obviously Floor waxers.

I just found Google Video Link of some MST3K videos someone uploaded.

My favorite lines from Cheating was when you see the teachers floating head and Tom Servo says something like "the faces of all he's wronged flash before him" and there's a part where he's sitting behind the girl in class and the narrorator says "Jane, who's head is right in front of you with all the answers in it" and Joel or Servo says "Split it open now!"

Very dark but hilarious.

My favorite MST3K period was the Sci-Fi era '97-99. Mike was funnier to me as host than Joel who talked like he was stoned half the time and even though some won't agree, I really liked Mary Jo as Pearl and Brain Guy and Bobo. Watching those particular episodes brings me back to my college years.

TV Shows on DVD reports that the Shout! Factory will announce a new 4-disc set of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episodes at the 2008 Comic-Con International in San Diego. The set should hit on October 28, 2008 – at least according to Amazon's pre-order page – for an SRP of $69.99, though Amazon shoppers can apparently snag it for around $48.99.

No word yet on which epsiodes or special features will be highlighted on the release, though the site does hint that Shout! may be planning a second set for early 2009.
