Comedy of the year anyone? I feel Robert Downey Jr. is gonna steal the show on this one too. His character barely looks like him.

Yeah thats what I hear too. Everyone who's seen the early screening seem to be saying that Tom Cruise is actually pretty funny in it. I haven't seen him in anything comedy related, so I'm looking forward to see what he can bring to the table.

What other cameos did you hear about? I heard about Tobey Mcguire and Cruise but I don't know about anyone else. Is it just me or is it weird to see these big name as just guest stars?

As weird as he his himself, Tim Robbins randomly showed up in Anchorman, and he's almost always in non-comedic flicks, barring out Hudsucker.

I saw the preview of Tropic Thunder, when I saw Batman. I think any "fears" people may have had about other people getting offended, are highly exaggerated. The audience seemed to get the joke of what Robert Downey Jr. is doing in the movie. The film actually looks pretty funny. Which I thought I would never say about a movie with Ben Stiller in it.

Was awesome. Way funnier than I expected it to be. Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey were unexpectedly hillarious. Everyone else was great also. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect and this was one of Ben Stiller's better rolls. Jack Black was...well Jack Black. Even Nick Nolte was pretty funny. I might even go see it again when it opens.

Will this movie actually be any good or were the boys just talking it up in hopes of getting one of the bigger stars on the show (a la Semi-Pro and Be Kind Rewind)? I haven't been to a movie in a long time, but with the boys liking it and Patrice's review I may have to go and see it.

Yeah but you could hear him trying not to vomit while he said it. He didn't have that same tone when they were talking the other day. BUT he did have this same tone for super bad and that movie was no way NEAR as good as people hyped it to be. It was standard rated R high school kids comedy and nothing else as far as I'm concerned.

Patrice is the one who makes me want to see it though. Hes like me and hates 99% of movie comedies that come out so to have him say its good makes me want to see it.

I don't really give a fuck what O&A say about it. They entertain me, but their own taste in entertainment is usually pretty different from mine. Their frequent need to hype up dog shit doesn't help either.

You've seen him in ads for the new comedy "Tropic Thunder" as a young black actor who is offended when his costar (played by Robert Downey Jr.) not only plays a character in blackface but also thinks that he's black off-screen.

That was all called for in the script for the movie, a Hollywood spoof about pampered actors who set out to shoot a war epic in Vietnam and end up under real-life fire.

What comedian and West Bloomfield High School graduate Brandon T. Jackson didn't count on was the way Downey, the former Hollywood bad boy and current "Iron Man" star, would do much the same in real life.

"He would not leave character," says Jackson, in town last month to share his breakout movie with a hometown audience.

"When they'd yell 'Cut,' he would say: 'Let's go to my trailer and get some barbecued chicken and barbecue sauce. C'mon with me, Brandon.' And I'm like, 'What the ...'

"He kept going, and it was ridiculous. It was really starting to offend me. And I'm like: 'Robert, we're two months into this. C'mon, Dawg.' "

When genuine anger started to flare on the set, Jackson confided in director Ben Stiller.

"He said: 'Keep that! Keep that! We need that! Just go there!' And that came out in those scenes of the movie."

Downey's a method actor. I sense that if he didn't bring that to the character, the reactions he got in the movie from fellow cast members would've been forced.

Exactly. It's brilliant on Downey's part. It makes the animosity that much more real. It's what the film is supposed to have. All the great actors who tend to play dicks in a film tend to be dickish on set just to keep the antagonism real. Off-set they're usually pretty cool.

Im not gonna say it was terrible but i was really surprised at how dissapointed i was. I just want to find these protests and firebomb them. Get over it retards!

Well I just got back from the movie(was FUCKING hilarious) and there were in fact some protesters there. A whopping 2 WHOLE protesters. They were 2 young guys, around my age, 20 something, handing out pamphlets. I honestly wouldn't have even acknowledged them had I known what they were there for. One of them walked up to my friend and myself and asked if we were seeing Tropic Thunder(I guess walking into the theater marked TROPIC THUNDER) wasn't a big enough clue. Anyway I said yes and my friend just walked right past them, I guess he knew what they were up to since he works at the theater. The guy then hands me a pamphlet and walks away. I assumed it was one of those surveys that movie companies sometimes ask customers to fill out. So I look at it and to my surprise, there's a retarded asian girl staring back at me. So then for shits and giggles i start reading it and OH BOY was it something. Here, let me "enlighten" you guys.
On Side A we get a picture of a retarded girl and a banner that says "Ban the movie, Ban the Word." Under that it says this...word for word

On Wednesday, 13 August, "Tropic Thunder," a Dreamworks comedy starrring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, will premier in theaters nationwide. Comedies are suppose to be funny. "Tropic Thunder is far from funny. It is offensive and hurtful
"Tropic Thunder" features a movie-withing-the-movie: "Simple Jack...Once upon a time there was a retard." The movie-within-the-movie contain extremely offensive material promoting the idea that a "retard" is funny
The R-word is derogatory hate speech that demeans the more than three percent of people around the world (approx. 190 million) who have intellectual disabilities.
So what can YOU do? Boycott the movie, encourage others to do the same. Call upon your local theater to not run the movie. Call Dreamworks to express your feelings about the movie. Spread the message of acceptance and inclusion by pledging not to say the "R-word" at www.r-word.org

Thats it, there's a second side stating facts about retards, but I'll spare you guys. My friends and I of course got a huge laugh out of this. So much of a laugh that I decided to go back out and speak with these gentlemen. I walked up to the one that handed this to me and asked him. "Ok so retard is bad, does that mean we can still use Dummy, dope, imbecile, dumbass and tard?" to which he huffed, frowned, made some strange snort and walked away from me. I'm all for treating my fellow man with kindness and respect, but honestly this movie isn't even ABOUT retarded people. If anything it's saying that making fun of them IS wrong. RDJs character points out to Stiller that he went "Full retard" and got so into it that audiences couldn't connect. That's essentially saying "You acted too much like a retard, overdid it, and offended people." only in a comedic way. Geez people are so oversensative now, it makes me sick. Anyway, I snapped a few pics of the pamphlet. Sorry for the low quality, I lent my camera to my parents for their vacation and had to use my cellphone

Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller and starring Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. as a group of prima donna actors filming a Vietnam War film when their fed-up writer-director decides to dump them in the middle of the jungle for them to fight their way out.

Just got back. Thought it was freakin' hysterical. Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely amazing as an African American guy, ("the dude playing a dude, disguised as another dude!). Ben Stiller was very funny, and Jack Black had some fall on the floor funny lines. Tom Cruise was a pleasant surprise, and so was Tobey McGuire and Matthew McConaughey. The opening caught me totally off guard, and I thought it was very innovative and cool. A great comedy film, definitely worth seeing. "Simple Jack" was hysterical, by the way, screw the tards and the support groups.

The only complaint is Matthew Mcconaughey's final speaking scene. You watched it....you know what I mean.

Tom Cruise is the best Hollywood studio exec portrayed on screen ever. You know he HAD to have modeled it on some real people he met.

Robert Downey Jr. owns the film. Jack Black was actually in good form. And Stiller was kept to probably the right amount.

Questions for those who saw it...

Did anyone else think the thing was hacked to shit during the editing process?

It opens with that explanation about the mission the three books were based on and how Four Leaf's was the one to get optioned, but then later Four Leaf was a fake? Was there any reason for this? So if there was no mission in Vietnam how did three books get written about the same thing? I felt like there must have been some explanation of this in there.

What happened to the scene with Ben Stiller tied to the chair where he kicks the dude in the stomach from the old trailer a couple of those fight shots from the trailer seemed to be missing.

Even though they were filming this thing guerrilla style, I never thought they would have real bullets in their guns, so I just kept thinking why didn't they grab the real guns from the drug dealers when they had the chance?

I loved a lot of the comedy but the action, and fact that no one except the director died it kind of annoyed me.

Maybe they didn't have a good chance to get the guns (thinking they were prop guns near the end), maybe they were scared of firing real guns, I don't know. I thought about this too though.

and the fact that no one except the director died it kind of annoyed me. I chalked that up to general action cliches like in the A-Team where no one dies despite massive explosions.

Holy shit what a bomb. I have no idea where the funny was.

Do you have trouble finding things funny when others find it to be funny? that is how some people respond to great comedies, by saying they found nothing funny...and they continue on their grumpy boring lives. My dad is like that. He never finds movies to be funny.
The movie was very funny, if you did not find that to be so then i feel sorry for you. you are missing out on a lot of smiles in life.

I think part of the joke WAS that the never picked up the real guns. You would see that they clearly had blanks and they were too stupid to give up their prop guns...Also, Re: Multiple books...Isn't it possible that someone pretended to be part of the whole fiasco and wasn't...

When I first started seeing the trailers for the movie, I immediately disliked it. It didn't seem even a little bit funny, and it looked like it was going to be another shitty Ben Stiller movie where he plays a guy who thinks he's really tough and smart but is actually stupid and very emotional. But then I heard Patrice going insane about it, and I thought that I was wrong. I wasn't wrong.

It was just like all of the other shitty parody comedies like Epic Movie and Scary Movie and that stuff. Just stupid gags intended to poke fun at things but ended up being poorly done and cliched.

How was the Tom Cruise dancing stuff funny? It was EXACTLY like the terrible unfunny white people dancing crap they do in all of those awful parody movies. I guess it was supposed to be funny because it was Tom Cruise, but that's not enough for me. I don't think of him as some top flight actor who is supposed to be above things like this, so it didn't have the desired impact with me.

I should probably just go with my gut instinct instead of taking other peoples' word for things. It was the exact movie I expected it to be. I feel like if it didn't have the cast it has, and didn't have the two "controversial" jokes it has, the critics would have shit all over this just like they do to Epic Movie and those like it.

Plus, for a movie that was supposed to be poking fun at Hollywood and the things they do, this movie felt like it was the same thing that they were making fun of.

I guess I just don't get it, but I felt trapped in the theatre watching a high budget version of those terrible parody movies.

But how is it satire when it's the exact same thing? The crowd was laughing at it as though THAT was the funny part, not that it was funny because it was making fun of other movies doing it. The way I saw it, they were just expecting it to get a big laugh because of who was doing it, not because it was any kind of good parody.

Saw this last night. I thought it was alright. I did'nt really find that many laughs in it to be honest and neither did most of the people in the theater I was in. I'm not saying it was a bad movie but it was just not my cup of tea I guess.

I took the wife to see it yesterday. She used to teach retards, so she was one of the assholes bitching about them making fun of waterheads. She only went because of some bad news I got earlier in the day and threw me a bone. She laughed her ass off the entire movie-especially during the "full retard" monologue. I thought it was great. I think some people take things too literally instead of looking at things for what they are. It's a fucking comedy, not Citizen Kane.

Caught it last night and thought the first half of the film was actually a little dull and not very funny. However, thought the second half of the film was hilarious. RDJ made me laught everytime he was onscreen and opened his mouf. Overall an entertaining flick, IMO, since the humor in the 2nd half outweighed the "Ehh, OK" factor of the first.

Funny movie. Some parts were hilarious while others were just ok. But overall I thought it was a pretty decent flick.

Solid comedy, washed the bad taste Pineapple Express left in my mouth. Simple Jack and Tom Cruise were ok, but they weren't even close to the funniest scenes in the movie. Downey Jr, as always, rules. Everyone else was also really good (Danny McBride, who I hated in Pineapple Express, won me over in this. I guess it's just because that movie sucked and this didn't). Starts strong, bogs down a little in the middle, and finishes strong, and I imagine most people will laugh more often than not.

Downey was brilliant. Jack Black was great with the heroin angle. Lagged in some spots, but overall laughed a good number of times.

I didn't find the retarded jokes, that offensive at all. Couple of my friends don't wanted to see b/c they work with mental ill and the retarded, they got a point. The funniest part was the whole simple jack scene with Ben Stiller. Downey Jr was great. Ben Stiller and Jack Black were fucking hilarious.

But how is it satire when it's the exact same thing? The crowd was laughing at it as though THAT was the funny part, not that it was funny because it was making fun of other movies doing it. The way I saw it, they were just expecting it to get a big laugh because of who was doing it, not because it was any kind of good parody.

In general, the difference between Tropic Thunder and Epic Movie, et al, IS that it is satirical as opposed to just being a parody.

Satire doesn't necessarily have to be funny, in this case it was hysterical. Those crappy parody movies aren't trying to say anything about the films they parody, they are just being silly.

As far as this specific scene, there is definitely more behind it laugh-wise than who is doing it. I used to see something like it in the music industry. You get these executives who try to act like they connect with some new style of music, but it just comes off weird and creepy.

The other reason the movie works is there is definitely an amount of self-deprecation by the actors involved. It does take being familiar with their careers to catch all the jokes.

loved the movie, most of the ppl in the theater seemed to be put off by the retard humor. only me, my chick and a lady in front of me were laughing our asses off during the simple jack scenes.

Liked it, but it seems just like every other Apatow flick....it doesn't know where or how to end.

It should've been about 10 minutes shorter.

Saw it tonight with the wife. The second half was so much funnier then the first half. Had no problem with the retarded stuff at all. RDJ was absolutely right. If you want to win an Oscar, you don't go all retard, just part.

I usually despise Jack Black, but when he was going through withdrawal it was insanely funny. All in all a really funny yet ridiculous flick.

They put Rain of Madness on iTunes. All together its about 30 mins, but you'll enjoy it if you liked the movie. The production value of it is pretty impressive too, really looks like a documentary.

Yeah its free, its pretty much a must see if you liked Tropic Thunder. They have the website rainofmadness.com but I think you get the full download and higher quality when downloaded on iTunes. Its 30 mins so you get a good amount of video. Lots of RDJ "footage" too.

It's out on DVD today, and Netflix sent it to me right away. I laughed harder at this film than anything Hollywood has cranked out in years. Everything that needs to be said about Downey already was in this thread.
