An Australian man convicted of his seventh drink-driving charge was spending about A$1,000 ($972) a week on beer -- enough to buy more than 2,500 small bottles a month, a newspaper said Tuesday.
The heartbroken construction worker began drowning his sorrows after breaking up with his partner five years ago, the Northern Territory News said, quoting his defense lawyer as telling a court in Australia's remote, tropical north.
The magistrate declined to jail the father of four, Michael Leary, noting he had quit drinking since his latest arrest, but he banned Leary from buying or even holding a beer for 12 months.
The magistrate also poked fun at Leary's favorite beer, Melbourne Bitter, in a part of the country where drinkers can be as loyal to beer brands as they are to football teams.
"(That is) poor judgment on two counts there -- drinking that much and drinking Melbourne Bitter," magistrate Vince Luppino was quoted as saying.

read this yesterday, still find it hard to believe... I mean how much does this guy weigh?
I did a calculation, 83 beers a day, at a weight of 210 lbs, his bac would be 1.094.
Now.
0.00 g/210 liters of breath - This is the only safe BAC level.
0.02 g/210 liters of breath - At and above this level US federal laws mandate that a person in a safety sensitive transportation job must be removed from the workplace.
0.04 g/210 liters of breath - At and above this level US federal laws mandate that a person in a safety sensitive transportation job must be sanctioned and may lose their job. Also in most states a person can be convicted of driving under the influence at this level.
0.08 g/210 liters of breath - At and above this level you can be convicted of driving while intoxicated in most states.
0.10 g/210 liters of breath - At and above this level you can be convicted of driving while intoxicated in ALL states.
0.30 g/210 liters of breath - At this level most people will lose conciousness.
0.40 g/210 liters of breath - At this level most people will become comatose and may die.
Going on this data he'd have to be 580 lbs to survive that much beer. Not to mention time in a day, unless he just wades in a puddle of his own piss...
Shenanigans!

Bulgarian doctors tested a man's blood-alcohol level five times before accepting it was 0.914 – nearly twice the amount considered to be life-threatening.

The 67-year-old man landed in hospital on Dec. 20 after a car knocked him off his feet in the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, police and doctors said Tuesday.

A breath test indicated blood-alcohol levels so high that police thought their equipment was broken, because the man remained conscious and talked with them.

The head of Plovdiv police, Col. Angel Rangelov, said five separate lab tests taken the same day confirmed the man's blood-alcohol level of 0.914.

A blood-alcohol level of 0.55 is considered potentially fatal.

In comparison, the Bulgarian man's level was more than 11 times higher than the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers in Canada, which is 0.08.

The man, who has not been identified, was reported to be in stable condition after being treated for head injuries.

I knew a guy who blew a .26 when he got nailed for DUI. When he went to the court-ordered alcohol rehab, he was the youngest person there and had the highest BAC. Everyone turned their heads and looked at him because at the first group session he had to give his name, age, and BAC when he was arrested.
