This is more for some of the History buffs, maybe some movie fans. For those that dont know, Centralia, Pa is the town that the movie Silent Hill is based on, with a whole lotta fiction thrown in.

A couple of us from WDT are gonna make this trek before winter sets in. I have one open seat left in my car (S2 booked one), but others are welcome to follow.

There is a certain amount of danger (nothing major) involved in this trip. The town is known for frequent cave ins, and high levels of CO2. At times you may be trespassing on private state property. At this time it is unknown how fare we can drive into the no longer recognized town, so some hiking will probably be needed.

There will be nothing much to do there, other than see one of natures oddities, and for the most part, a ghost town.

If anyone is interested or has questions, PM me or reply to this thread.

The ruins of Centralia Pennsylvania no longer exists on some maps. The story began sometime in 1962 along the outskirts of town when trash was burned in the pit of an abandoned strip mine, which connected to a coal vein running near the surface. The burning trash caught the exposed vein of coal on fire. The fire was thought to be extinguished but it apparently wasn't when it erupted in the pit a few days later. Again the fire was doused with water for hours and thought to be out. But it wasn't. The coal then began to burn underground. That was in 1962. For the next two decades, workers battled the fire, flushing the mines with water and fly ash, excavated the burning material and dug trenches, backfilled, drilling again and again in an attempt to find the boundaries of the fire and plan to put the fire out or at least contain it. All efforts failed to do either as government officials delayed to take any real action to save the village. By the early 1980s the fire had affected approximately 200 acres and homes had to be abandoned as carbon monoxide levels reached life threatening levels. An engineering study concluded in 1983 that the fire could burn for another century or even more and "could conceivably spread over an area of approximately 3,700 acres."

We have been talking about doing a ATV trip up there for a year now. I have some great websites on this town, where are you located and do you ride? According to some you cant get to the interesting areas in a car (too dangerous I guess) but on a quad its a little safer.

I dont ride, I Jeep (four wheelin), been on the outskirts of the town before, on the locally known "cattle trail" if you know where that is. I am located just outside the Poconos on the south side. Its about and hour and a half ride for me....maybe I should borrow my dads truck and take the dirt bike?

I love stuff like this. I would be so up for it, even follow in my own car if I wasn't leaving for basic.

Ever drive through some of the abondoned craphole towns in Alabama? It's like a Stephen King book right outside your car window.

The PA State Police patrol the area. If they happen to stumble upon you and tell you to leave, my advice is to do so. Acting like a typical O&A fan is not recommended.

I'd be up for doing a day trip and meeting everyone somewhere. Im from close to Reading, so the drive for me would be about an hour to hour and a half. I'd be up for hiking around up there. Its been a few years since Ive been up past that way, I can remember when I was younger how many places were in town there and now their are either torn down or abandon. The creepiest past is the cemetary that is at the top of the hill. You just see the sulfer and coming up through the graves.

The original road through has been closed for a long time. There is a small bypass road that takes you around the worst part and come out right at the cemetery. Or starts at the cemetery depending on which side you're coming from. There really isn't much left anymore. The post office, The EMS which is 1 fire truck and 1 ambulance. There are maybe a handful of homes and pretty much everything else is just empty lots. On the Ashland side of 61 where the original road is blocked off you could conceivably park there and hoof it over the dirt mound you can go into the area they have closed off but be very careful. Mine shaft collapses are prone to happen. Every once in a while you hear about some kids 4 wheelin back there and the bottom drops out. I guess if you've never seen it, its pretty intriguing to go see but when you go through there a few times every year there is really nothing to look at.

Went up there riding ATV's last year. Ripping up and down the section of Rt. 61 that was cut off was wild, the road just rose up several feet in places and split with sulfur smelling smoke coming out, like riding in Hell. Pretty cool.

Lots of trails around the area as well through the woods and such.

However, the cops scoped out our trailer and stuck around till we got back and advised us to leave immediately and not come back.

If you look just south of town you can see the big chunk of highway cut out.

While I agree it is best to leave if the state police say to do so, what laws if any would be broken by visiting here? The state has yet to enforce eminent domain.

I dont want to get a bunch of wackbaggers in trouble or have them make the trip (real long for some,) to just get turned away :mad4:

Trespassing on private property. You have to prove you have permission to ride, or they need to contact the owner to see if they want to press charges...

Do you really need the hassle?

Park further south, like Locustdale. The land is crisscrossed with trails that go everywhere.

I've been there many many times. One of my Dad's good friends was part of the team the state employs to monitor the fire and I've been on many surveys with them. The winter is the best time to go. The surrounding snow that melts and feeds moisture to the effected areas gives the best steam effect. But you have to keep in mind that the fire does move and just because you are standing on an area that looks safe, it may not be.
