John McCain topped Barack Obama's week-old TV ratings record, drawing 500,000 more viewers than his Democratic opponent to watch his acceptance speech on Thursday.
Nielsen reported that Day Four of the Republican National Convention attracted 38.9 million viewers. Last week, Day Four of the Democratic National Convention set a convention record with 38.4 million viewers.
Wednesday's ratings for the Republican convention, featuring McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, fell 1.1 million short of Obama's ratings, but 6.9 million ahead of Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden.
McCain did much better among Whites and men, Nielsen reported. McCain, for example, drew 17.9 million male viewers while Obama drew 16.2 million. Obama had 19.9 million female viewers compared with 19.2 million for McCain.
McCain attracted 32.2 million White viewers and Obama had 27 million. Among Blacks, Obama pulled in 7.5 million viewers while McCain had 3.1 million.
Ratings for both conventions were significantly higher than in recent years.
The ratings have not served as a reliable predictor of electoral prospects. The party with higher ratings has won six of the past 12 elections, Nielsen records show.
On top of which McCain was shown on 4 fewer networks (surprisingly BET didn't show his speech).

If this is true??? Do you read your posts before you hit submit? Believe me, if they could have it that the DNC had higher ratings, it would be out there.
He was at the Greek ruins too? I thought they struck that set. Very nice of the DNC to move it over to St PAul.

They will probably say that the republicans were sending out e-mails and flyers in major cities with the wrong times and TV channels listed for the upcoming Barack Obama acceptance speech during the democratic covention to confuse viewers and keep them from being able to watch the live event.
That's what they say whenever there is a fucking election.
"We was told that this poll was closed and that we couldn't vote" It's bullshit but we hear it every fucking year and there is some conspiracy to keep minorities from voting...:icon_roll

Exactly. It could be that more democrats wanted to watch McCain. It could be that less republicans watched obama. It could be that Obama's speech was during the last week of summer and people were on vacation. It could be that McCain's speech was during the first week of school when more people are home to watch. It could be that more republican got neilson rating things. It could be anything. You can't equate TV ratings with polling numbers.

Doesn't really matter who watched what. They made a big deal about Obama's having the highest ratings ever for an acceptance speech & he got beat a week later.
Most likely, Palin gave him the boost. After the success of her speech, people wanted to tune in to see what Mccain did.

Not to piss on your fireworks, so to speak, but the answer as to why McCain got the higher ratings could be down to Democrat voters tuning in to see how fucked-up they find the whole spectacle. You might be right, but as a member of the Conservative Party here in the UK, I know that I tend to pay a lot more attention to speeches and statements that our Labour Party Prime Minister gives, because I want to see what boneheaded dipshit thing he's going to say or do next. It's the political equivalent of car crash TV: you can't stand the guy, hate his politics, but you want to see what he says so you can tear into him, chuckle at his idiocy and justify your own political position.

Like I said, I honestly don't know the truth on this, but neither does anyone else. It could be a sign of fantastic support for McCain, but it could be something entirely different. I was actually surprised that Palin didn't have the highest ratings, simply because she seemingly came out of nowhere, few knew much about her (on either side) and people would be naturally curious to see what she was about.

Okay so we have an amateur at the top of the Democrat Party ticks and a veteran on the bottom of the ticket. The guy at the top appears to be in good health and is still in his 40s.
On the Republican side you have the veteran at the top and the amateur on the bottom of the ticket, but the guy at the top is 72 years old (I think this is past the mandatory retirement age in the military, yet he'll be commander in cheif if elected)
All I can say is that at least in the case of McCain & Palin, McCain and the inner circle will have time (hopefully) to get Palin ready to take over when its time, in the case of Obama he'll be President on day 1 and as Joe Biden said, this is not a place for on the job training.

I don't think his speech was spectacular...I think it was only slightly better than Biden's. The delivery was awful because McCain sucks at prepared speeches...and the content was so-so. In fact, I would rank them Palin, Obama, McCain, then Biden in terms of best to worst.
McCain somehow shines without a script and can fight back under pressure in a debate. Obama can't...in fact, he apparently doesn't make any sense without a script and when he is challenged. That's why I think he's done for after the debates...especially the last one...which is on foreign policy. I don't know what he's gonna say if McCain backs him into a corner. But, I'll be sure to tune in and watch the hilarity.

I don't deny that Obama probably is lacking in town hall personal interaction skills, but I think he will be fine in a debate. Debating Hillary was the hardest thing Obama would ever have to do in that arena, not that she's better than McCain, simply because they were in fact similar in many issues, so nearly every debate point had to be intricate. when he's up against someone from a different party, you've got to think he would do better, given the stark differences in philosophy. whether or not you agree with his philosophy, this is the conventional wisdom here.

Actually at this point the conventional wisdom is that Obama can't tie his own shoes without a cue card. McCain is an experienced politician who has spent 30 years dealing with people in personal settings. Barring any dirty tricks by the "unbiased" moderators, McCain will mop the floor with Barry O.

I just recall occasions where Obama just blurts out the first thing that comes to mind when he is challenged and when he doesn't have anything prepared. If McCain can go on the offense, which I suspect he will try repeatedly, we may hear contradictions like the one Obama made regarding Pakistan when Dodd backed him into a corner in a debate. Or, saying he heard some ugly, anti-white ramblings from Wright in a prepared statement...then going on live TV and saying that if he had ever heard any ugly, racist comments...which he says he didn't, he would've left the church. Obama can be exposed.

I have listened to both sides, and all they do is make promises. Now I'm no fan of Obama, and would rather take a hammer and nail and nail my dick to the table then vote for him. But I have one serious question about McCains speech...
Change is coming. He has voted with Bush so many times (90-95%) that he is now giving the battle cry to storm the castle that his party currently occupies. I'm being completly baffled by this.
He votes party lines a majority of the time, but now is going to change Washington DC. If a candidate said they were going to change things and was an actual hard nosed conservative they would have my vote in a heartbeat.
I will go this far. I hope McCain gets elected, steps down in 4 years and Palin make a run for the Oval Office. If Washington DC doesn't poison her conservatism first of course.
So is it funny that a "Maverick" is screaming to storm the castle that he helped maintain with his own actions? Explain this to me, and I will change my signature to McCain/Palin.
