Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.
ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) — Blasting through the Republican convention hall is the 1977 hit "Barracuda" by rock band Heart.
It's a shout-out to Sarah Palin. When she played basketball in high school, the soon-to-be Republican vice presidential nominee earned the nickname "Sarah barracuda" for her fierce competitiveness.
Some of her opponents revived the "Sarah barracuda" nickname after she became mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, in 1996, defeating a three-term incumbent.
UPDATE: Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said Thursday night that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign over their use of 'Barracuda.'
"We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We
hope our wishes will be honored," the group said in a statement that said they "condemn" the use of the song at the Republican convention.

I'm not a republican but this is even low for the RIAA to even do. You would think they would be ok with a possible VP of the U.S.to use there song. Then again it is kind of funny that they never got the rights to the song. Just shows you how fucked up the RIAA is and how dumb the Republicans are. This is just my opinion though.

Do the rights to the songs last forever or do they expire like pharmaceutical patents?

Rights for movies, music and other types of media last about one persons lifetime. I believe about 70 years. I could be wrong on this.

There is also a fair use doctrine. Sony just wants to get paid because the song got played on TV

Ann Wilson should send a "Cease and Desist" to her knife and fork.

This same story comes up every election when some idiot musician gets their panties all in a bunch because a big bad Republican uses their song.
Remember Springsteen going after Reagan for using Born in the USA?

Actually, I don't. I don't doubt one DTT, just don't remember it.
I don't think I'd use that for my election though.

They last for 75 years plus the life of the artist/author (if they are still alive after 75 years of being published).
So, good news is that you can use ALL of the music you want from the 1920s without paying royalties.

Yeah maaaaaaaaaaaaan because Republicans aren't cool enough maaaaaaaaaaaaaan and only Democrats can use hip music because they fight for regular people instead of huge corporations like the local oil change business maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
"Artists" fucking make me sick. They make fortunes off of shit they threw together in their 20s and they still think of themselves as simple artists with a message instead of the corporate shills that they are.

That was the ironic part of the whole thing. But you know how people are, they just listen to the chorus anyway.
The thing that sucks is that the RNC is always stuck with country acts. Why can't there be ONE cool music act that isn't a liberal pantywaist?

Joe Biden is the RIAA's greatest political ally. He sponsored the RIAA's Perform Act, which would've restricted the recording and playback capabilities of our beloved Inno. He was only 1 of 4 senators invited to an RIAA champagne party to celebrate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
The RIAA would absolutely love to have one of their guys as VP.

If you hit the "QUOTE" button, you'll see the code. Basically you just copy and paste the code after the = (equals sign) from a YouTube url.

Actually, read a contract that most of them have with the record companies and you'll see how it's actually not the artist making the majority of the money from recordings. Also, it's not the artist calling out cease and desists 99% of the time.

Springsteen didn't go after Reagan much, other than to react by saying, "I don't know what song he was listening to." (then he said something like, maybe this one would have been clearer, and he played Johnny 99 http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/Johnny99.html )....itwas at a pittsburgh concert a few days after reagan had mentioned him in NJ. Other than playing the No Nukes show, Bruce had never done anything overtly political at that point.
However, I think Springsteen reacted to Dole's campaign using a song in 96 by saying that he wasn't a supporter of Dole's (and left it at that).
Similarly to Ann and Nancy Wilson here, John Fogerty played the "Vote for Change" tour, yet the RNC was blasting "Centerfield" the other day.

I'll bet because of Sarah Palin, there have been at least 1000 downloads on iTunes for Barracuda.

Well hopefully all of the right wingers who want "Barracuda" on their iPods now already have a copy or can steal it from somewhere.
I certainly wouldn't want to give them money for that stupid song now.

You know the worst part is and I think it's from their "Behind the Music," is that she has something like reverse anorexia. She claims as her weight ballooned she looked in the mirror and saw the same normal looking girl she was before. Whereas an anorexic looks in the mirror and still sees a fatty. Ann Wilson needs the real anorexia.
