A little background on the story: The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, located in southwest South Dakota, is a dry reservation. No alcohol allowed. Some sort of law-thingy.

If Paul Red Star Jr. is found guilty and tagged with the moniker of "bootlegger", that officially makes him awesome. Unfortunately, we are not told how much Hurricane Malt Liquor was purchased by Paul Red Star Jr.

========

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Federal prosecutors have charged a Wounded knee man with bootlegging on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Paul Red Star Jr. is charged with dispensing intoxicants in Indian Country. The 73-year-old Red Star pleaded not guilty in federal court in Rapid City. According to court documents, he bought Hurricane Malt Liquor at a Gordon, Neb., store in December and was stopped by an officer on the reservation who saw the alcohol partially hidden under a blanket in Red Star's pickup.

I was expecting to see a picture of Pepper Hicks with a duffel bag full of Batman DVD's.

I know two American Indians, and let me tell you that any effort to keep alcohol away from these people is a good thing.

Isn't just being in possession of malt liquor a crime?

When I traveled around to different Safeway stores as a sales rep a long time ago part of my territory was Northern Arizona. I remember working a store on a reservation that was dry also and when I went just outside of the city limits to a liquor store to buy my beer, I was approached by a couple of Injuns wanted me to buy them beers.

These guys were in their 40's and 50's (or at least looked like it) and it seemed pretty sad. I think they they got something in their DNA that turns them into lunatics when they touch the stuff because everybody had warned me not to buy booze for anyone.

I seen somewhere that we (people) have an enzyme that breaks down alcohol and Indians have less of it than other races.Asians have the most.I've partied with Vietnamese and Laotians,DO NOT try to match them drink for drink.Little bitty fellers can flat put it away.

yea, the injuns cant have fire water, as a matter of fact there are lots of "native american community's" that ban booze, its a real problem in ..... ALASKA!
most reservations are dry, for the natives, its part of the reason that we defeated them so easily, we hooked them on the fire water, and that was the end of it. my neighbor is from the south west.... holy shit i thought i was a raciest, to listen to him go on and on about the "fucking drunken bastards" is hilarious...

It should be. Put em' in prison preemptively because malt liquor = crime probably about to happen like in Minority Report.

yes, i also watched a special on either NOVA or front line one time about substance abuse in the Inuit community. i rarely ever get emotional watching things on TV but that made me cry, the people up there, mostly young children, will do anything to get "high" i saw children the age of my son (8-9 at the time) huffing gasoline fumes and drinking anti freeze and shit, the worst part was that there parents were even worse, making booze out of anything that would ferment, and getting so fucked up that they could do nothing. it was so sad, and thats coming from someone that hates most other human beings.
