LOS ANGELES - John Ritter, whose portrayal of the bumbling but lovable Jack Tripper helped make the madcap comedy series "Three's Company" a smash hit in the 1970s, has died, his publicist and longtime assistant said Friday. He was 54.

Ritter fell ill Thursday on the set of his ABC sitcom "8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter," said Susan Wilcox, his assistant of 22 years. The cause of death was a dissection of the aorta, the result of an unrecognized flaw in his heart, said his publicist, Lisa Kasteler.

Ritter died at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday,

Ritter, a Southern California native who lived in Beverly Hills, came to prominence for his role in "Three's Company" and had appeared in more than 25 television movies and a number of films.

Ritter, who would have turned 55 on Wednesday, made a successful return to sitcom acting with "8 Simple Rules" last year, and the ABC show was scheduled to begin its second season on Sept. 23.

At the Burbank hospital where he died, Ritter was accompanied by producers and co-workers, his wife, Amy Yasbeck, and 23-year-old son Jason, Wilcox said. He is survived by three other children, Carly, Tyler and Stella.

I was shocked to hear about John Ritters death early this morning. He was only 54, and always appeared to be a healthy and fit guy. Three's Company is definitly a classic and in my opinion, one of the funniest sitcoms ever. I too grew up with that show and still tune in now and then on Nick at Night and still it makes me laugh even though I've seen all the episodes probably a hundred times. I have never seen the new show he had on ABC, but I heard it was doing well. He will be missed, and will forever be remembered as Three's Company will probably continue to rerun for decades and make new generations laugh.

Same here. I woke up and was just in awe. They were talking to Henry Winkler on the phone, and he was there when they took Ritter to the hospital. Then they had Suzanne Somers crying on the phone. It's so unbelieveable.

Johnny Cash died of complications of diabetes.
John Ritter suffered a massive heart attack while
on the set of his show. He apparently had a heart
defect that wasn't detected in checkups and he died
in the hospital a short time later.
Both will be missed. I grew up listening to Cash and
watching Ritter on the tube.

Well, we have the group of three that there always seems to be. Earlier in the week it was Warren Zevon.

Now it's Johnny Cash, and John Ritter. All will be missed. I grew up watching Three's Company as well. I have almost every episode memorized I think. And, I always liked Johnny Cash which is kinda rare for my age group I think.
