OLDSMAR, Fla. -- Authorities say a Tampa-area kidnapping victim escaped by grabbing the gun of a suspect distracted by text messaging.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly Sunday night incident. Detectives say three suspects forced 20-year-old Gregory Longley into their car at gunpoint.
They hoped he would lead them to another man, with whom they were in a dispute over stolen coins. Authorities say the suspect sitting next to Longley, 18-year-old Javon Strange, laid his handgun on his lap while sending a message.
Longley grabbed the gun, fatally shot Strange and injured the suspect in the passenger seat. He ordered the driver to stop the car, escaped and called 911. Authorities charged the driver, 18-year-old Abdusbasiyr Blake, with armed kidnapping and felony murder.
