not an exact quote, but I had to be the guy who makes that headline first out of this anecdote.....
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Obama_Lipstick_on_a_pig.html
Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig'
Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:
Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."
The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

edit: drudge got to it first.
edit: apparently, its an old expression.

Great. Even this could be bad for Obama with those women who think he meant Palin is a pig...he probably shouldn't have used that animal.
It's silly...but these women on the fence might take it the wrong way.

there might be a fox news-watching element that somehow gets offended at that, but i doubt that would be your swing voters. if that's who decides elections, i'm moving to liechtenstein.
Lipstick on a pig is indeed an old expression for trying to dress up something to make it more palatable.
Tar Baby is also an old expression for a situation where once you touch it, you can't get away. You can't use the expression in public without people bringing up that tar baby is "a derogatory term for a black child" which I'm not even sure is the case.

Eh, I guess so.
But then I mean he shouldn't be flying and driving all over the U.S, or using electricity...
On the topic of possible speaking faux pas, Biden was in Columbia, Mo this morning, and told a paraplegic state senator (Chuck Graham) to stand up and let people see him...
He recovered by saying, "I tell ya what, stand up for Chuck"
I guess you can't expect him to know everyone in a state senate, but it's still funny. Maybe he is a dummy...
I like the "Stand up, let everyone see ya.... OH!..."
He was in St.Louis also, but I decided I wasn't going to sit in a gym for 3 hours holding a seat before he actually spoke.

McCain's campaign immediately organized a telephone conference call in response and called on Obama to apologize for calling Palin a pig. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin; he had been talking about McCain immediately before the lipstick comment.
and if anyone else doesnt think this will die down....
McCain has used the lipstick phrase, too.
Last year while criticizing health proposals from the Democratic presidential candidates, he said Hillary Rodham Clinton's resembled the failed plan she offered as first lady during the 1990s. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," McCain of her proposal.

It doesn't matter if "lipstick on a pig" is an old saying; it's been a week since the most famous new player in the world uttered her most famous quip "lipstick on a pitbull" (paraphrase) so the comment understandably was immediately taken as a thinly-veiled sexist, childish jab at her.
Which is fine in and of itself, and women should take the same rough-and-tumble as men...
But what an idiotic, thoughtless lapse in judgement. Barry is hemmoraging women voters, and Drudge is already reporting that he called her a fishy-smelling pig. Way to win back those emotion-free women voters stupid!
Barry and his handlers are cracking up. If Earl Douglas has any true convictions he'll aim a bullet through his walnut-sized brain in two months

Anybody who seriously thinks that the phrase 'lipstick on a pig' is a direct insult to Palin, or a sexist jab - as opposed to an age-old, oft-repeated phrase along the lines of 'a wolf in sheep's clothing' - is as dumb as a bag of spanners.

Permit me to type slower
It doesn't matter what he actually meant
His guffawing audience immediately took it to be a slam at her.
McCain's team immediately used it as a bludgeon against him.
Half of the nation's voters have an IQ below 100.
Any sane political operative would have immediately identified it as quicksand to invoke.

That was made long before anyone outside of Alaska ever heard of Sarah Palin.
Look it was Obama taking a jab at Palin, his advisers thought it would be a witty thing to say, the crowd loved it, but its backfired.
Obama needs to clean house in his campaign, his advisers don't have a clue how to run a general election campaign.
Hey Barack, swallow your pride and bring on the team that got Clinton elected, or embarrass yourself with a humiliating defeat in November.

It's not a question of what I think of his campaign, or whether it backfired. I'm laughing at the faux outrage from the right - and it IS faux outrage. It's no different than what the left-wing assholes do, and nobody seems to have a problem calling them on their faux outrage.

Exactly.
Remember when Kerry made his "botched joke" a couple of years ago? Obviously it was a jab at Bush, but the way it was worded made it sound like our soldiers were stupid, and Kerry was criticized for it.

Everything in a political campaign in "Faux". Just like the flag thing, it means nothing but if the Obama camp wants any chance of winning in November they have to stop making stupid mistakes like this.
