An influential auto safety group is calling on states to raise the minimum age to get a driver's license. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says states should raise the minimum age from 16 years old to 17 or 18.

How about making the driving test a little harder? My neighbors daughter had an accident during the test and had her license a month later.

i was watching this on the news tonight, quite frankly im split on it, since it wont effect me because im 38, but, i think instead of raising the driving age they should not only make the test harder, they should retest people more often, every one, like a lottery or jury duty, you never know when its going to happen, just out of the blue when you get your renewal your picked at random to take a retest, with technology today you dont even have to drive a car, just make it a simple reaction time/ rules of the road test, that you can take on a computer or simulator, then if you fail the simulator test you have to take a road test, driving is a privilege not a right, if you cant handle the privilege then maybe you shouldn't be driving. im kind of jaded because i work in the auto wreck industry so i see a lot of stupid people wrecking there cars for stupid reasons, there's nothing funnier than some asshole that is clearly wrong screaming about how the other asshole caused the collison.

x2. Besides, there's a chance that some kid was born in September, started school early, and won't turn 18 until they're a college freshman. That's asinine.
I don't know if it's the kids today or it's just being publicized more, but it seems like they're getting into more accidents & the severity is increasing. NJ is putting all these restrictions on kids when they get their license. I don't think it's helping, either.

My son turns 16 in January, and I have already told him he has to wait until 17. 16 is just too fucking young, in my opinion.

Can kids really have a license at 16 now? I went through that in MA in the late 70's, I remember it as being able to get a learners permit at 16.5 and a license at 17.
Guess it depends on the state.
I don't know how you people survived without cars at 16. I had to get to a damn job and there was no way my parents were going to pick me up from work at 10:00 at night.
On top of that, my senior year I took a radio TV for half the day. I had to be at school for "zero hour", drive across town to the vocational school for three hours, and then drive back to the high school for the rest of my classes. Then I had to drive my ass home, get my homework done, and then drive to work...sometimes before my parents got home. Could never have done it without a car.
I've heard that most people don't have driver's ed in school anymore. That may be the problem.

If I had my way they would both raise the driving age and lower the drinking age to 18. 16 year olds are not mature enough anymore.

I wouldn't trust most 16 yr olds with a riding mower let alone a car

Completely fucking agree. If that was the case, maybe the old bitch that hit my ride wouldnt have been allowed to drive since she couldnt see my big black truck in the middle of the day. Bitch.
My vote is that there should be a two year driving course. The Japanese are some of the best drivers in the world (the ones in Japan) because of the strict driving restrictions that they have. (so I have heard)
a 16 year old behind the wheel is the equivalent to a waterhead with a gun.
