Spags leaves Washington without an offer!!!!!!!!!
Spags departed late last night, without an offer
Just sent this in for what we call a "web story," but I'll post it here too.
Steve Spagnuolo left Redskins owner Daniel Snyder's home late on Wednesday night without a contract offer, according to two people familiar with the discussions, and it appears he is leaning towards returning to the Giants for at least another season as defensive coordinator.
Spagnuolo was spending this morning deciding if he wants to be considered for the job, following nearly a full day's worth of talks with Snyder and Redskins vice president of operations Vinny Cerrato. Spagnuolo, who has a new contract on the table from the Giants that will make him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the NFL, flew to Washington, D.C. immediately after the Giants' championship parade and stadium rally on Tuesday evening.
He met with Snyder and Cerrato late into the night, stayed over at a guest house on Snyder's property and resumed talks early Wednesday morning. Those lasted into the night, but Spagnuolo left for his home in New Jersey to discuss the situation with his wife, Maria.
Former Giants coach Jim Fassel is considered the top candidate for the job, along with former 49ers ad Lions coach Steve Mariucci. One of the people familiar with the job search said the Redskins may choose either of the veteran coaches as early as this afternoon.

Giants QB Manning jokes Belichick left field early to 'beat traffic'
NEW YORK -- Turns out Eli Manning has his own theory on why Patriots coach Bill Belichick left the field with one play left in the Super Bowl.
"Trying to beat traffic, I guess," the New York Giants quarterback told David Letterman, during an appearance on the "Late Show" Wednesday.
Letterman replied, "That's why he's a professional. It never occurred to me that the coach was trying to beat traffic. Must have been murder that day in Arizona, for God's sake."
Two weeks before the Giants upset the previously unbeaten Patriots, Letterman was welcoming Lawrence Tynes to his couch after a winning kick in the NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers.
This time it was Manning -- much maligned for so long -- reveling in the adulation of New York fans.
"I don't know if you know this or not, but people in New York City have opinions about their sports teams," Letterman said.
"And every day I would think, I'd say, 'I wouldn't give Eli's troubles to a monkey on a rock.' And they were unpleased with you, with the team, with everybody. And you must have had a sense of this unrest at some point in your four years here in the city."
Replying quite diplomatically, Manning said, "Yeah, well, I knew you were always on my side."
Letterman played the clip of Manning's throw to David Tyree on the go-ahead drive late in the game, in which the special teams player and backup receiver caught the ball against his helmet.
Then he asked about the touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress that gave the heavy underdogs a 17-14 lead with 35 seconds left.
"It really looked so easy, and it was so beautiful," Letterman said.
"A spiral," Manning replied. "That's rare for me."

YES!!!!! It's official, he's staying!!
http://blog.nj.com/ledgergiants/
From Spags' agent, Bob LaMonte, in an e-mail moments ago:
"Spags is staying with the Giants."
Much more to come
MG
Steve Spagnuolo's agent, Bob LaMonte, said his client was not offered the Redskins' head-coaching job, but that might have been because he was never fully into the possibility.
"His heart was in NY City!" LaMonte wrote in an e-mail.
Musta dropped it during the parade.
Anyway...
LaMonte said Spagnuolo had a "great meeting" with Washington owner Dan Snyder and executive VP of football ops Vinny Cerrato over the past two days. "Washington was first class," LaMonte said.
More details -- such as a new contract -- are still coming in.

more, this from ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3235255
New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who interviewed for the Redskins' head coaching job the past three days, has decided to stay in New York.
Spagnuolo was not offered the Redskins job but his agent Bob Lamont said "it didn't matter because his heart is in New York City."
"The Redskins were great ... it was a great interview," Lamont said.
The Giants are also giving Spagnuolo a new three-year contract in excess of $2 million per year, which would make him the league's highest-paid defensive coordinator.
With Spagnuolo out of the running, former Giants head coach Jim Fassel emerges as the leading candidate to get the Redskins job.

I hope the redskins get stuck with Fassel. At least we'll know how to play D against his standard offense of run offtackle on 1st, pass for no/short gain on 2nd, shotgun draw on 3rd. ANNNNNND PUNT.

true, sir. 6 million bucks does make it sweet. but so many times when you hear that a team is courting an offensive or defensive coordinator after a championship, you hope they'll stay but deep down you know they'll be offered a massive deal and have a giant (pun not intended) paycheck waved under their nose, and they're gone. i'm sure you remember John Fox.

Has Eli turned that corner after his performance in the playoffs and Super Bowl?
I really think so. Most of his problems seemed to stem from either overthinking or being underconfident. In the playoffs he played like he was just letting everything happen in front of him and then making the play, instead of forcing the play to happen, if that makes sense. And he has to have all the confidence in the world now.

I was talking to a friend of mine today who was crushed when the Giants beat the Packers :). He was asking me what I thought of Eli now after all that's happened. I was willing to say that he was now an above average quarterback (Which would mean he's in the top 16) based on the fact that he had his most marked improvement under the harshest of conditions. Having said that, am I completely confident that he comes out next year playing like the Eli we saw down the stretch? Not completely but I am convinced that he has now proven something to those around him which I think he's always believed. One good thing is he really doesn't have anything to prove now so he can go out and play loose and he'll get the respect from those who might whine for the ball that he knows best what to do with it. I do however certainly believe now that he could become great and I did not believe that before this latest run.

Eli did seem to be trying to force plays to happen, which explains why he threw so many interceptions in the past. he only threw one this entire postseason in the Super Bowl, a pick that wasn't his fault since it was an easy catch that was bobbled.

Hahaha, is that your spin, sir?
They didn't have anything to play for? How about the fucking Super Bowl? How about becoming the first team to ever go 19-0? How about history? How about a title for someone like Junior Seau or Randy Moss?
If my team couldn't get motivated for that then I wouldn't want to root for them.
As for the Giants, you do realize that they are one of the youngest teams in the NFL and that all of their core guys should be around for a while. Eli, Plax, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Osi, Tuck, Ross. That is the makings of a winner for the future. Not saying they will even win another title but they should be a fun team to watch, provided that Coughlin doesn't fulfill his destiny and become Billick Take 2.

putting the franchise tag on Gibril Wilson would cost $4.4 million; putting it on a LB or RB...$8.1 millon and $6.5 million respectively. So as per usual, the Giants are not expected to use the Franchise nor "transition" tag

Giants-Falcons rumored to be talking Deangelo Hall for the 31st pick in the draft.
The Giants are reportedly prepared to send the No. 31 overall pick in the draft to the Falcons in exchange for CB DeAngelo Hall.
The Giants were reportedly hoping to woo Nnamdi Asomugha or Marcus Trufant, but both were franchised. GM Jerry Reese views Asante Samuel as a product of the Patriots' system. The rebuilding Falcons could probably ask the Giants to add a later-round pick to the deal and get it. Despite the Super Bowl win, Reese smartly recognizes the Giants' CB situation as a need area.

I honestly want nothing to do with this guy! I don't want a guy who roomed with Michael Vick in college and gave a shout out to him in prison on Monday Night Football. I don't want a guy who lines up against one of the best receivers in the game (Carolina's Steve Smith), then procedes to lose all self control and rack up 67 penalty yards in one drive to lose a game for his team. I want my team to stay classy!
I think the Gints should go after Marcus Trufant instead. Or reward guys like Burress, Diehl and Snee, since they're asking for more money. Extend/rework their contracts before they get super expensive in the future. Those guys all deserve a raise!! But whatever you do, don't spend a possible $10 mil (what Hall will be looking for after the trade) on another asshat who wears #21!

I cant blame him for that. He has been good friends with Vick since he was like 18, you cant expect him to be like "oh he fought some dogs, fuck that guy." I would have less respect for him if he did that.

That was just one game, for a shitty Atlanta team that had no QB and everyone knew was going nowhere, he just exploded so I dont really give that much creedence either. I definitely wouldnt be mad if the Giants got Hall. That being said,

I totally agree. Trufant is a fucking solid player, he is good in coverage, a strong tackler, young (like 27 I think) and you never hear him popping shit. Coming to New York would probably get him a Pro Bowl bid, because no one watches/cares about the Seahawks. Is he a free agent, or were you thinking about a trade?

Damn!! Seattle franchised him last week. How'd I miss that?! I'm not sure what my alternative is now besides taking a chance on an Aaron Ross/Corey Webster tandem. Webster had a great postseason, but I'm not completely sold on him yet.
I think the more important question is Safety now. Rumor has it that Gibril Wilson is gonna be asking for Bob Sanders money ($6-7 mil). It would suck to see him go, and the Eagles are one team that's really seeking him out, but I don't think he's worth that, and I don't think Reese will think so either. So is Michael Johnson ready? Or are the Gints gonna look to the draft?

Lets face it, he isn't gonna bring that culture up here with him, he simply couldn't fit in the Metropolitan area with that mindset. He's only 24 years old...fucking younger than BOTH Webster & Ross!!!! As a 2-time Pro Bowler, he's totally worth the 31st overall pick. Will they do it? Probably not. Should they? If they can get him signed to a reasonable extention...luckily the attitude/injury would prevent him from being able to ask for Nate Clements money (8 years, $80 million)

He is nowhere near worth Sanders $$, but the only guys on the squad right now who have in-game experience playing saftey are Butler & Michael Johnson. That's fuckin scary, I want a veteran presence back there. One of the things that I've seen is, after a potential trade for Hall, it'd be Hall & Webster at the corners with Aaron Ross playing Saftey. He'd have to bulk up a bit for it, but he's got the range to be a good free saftey and I think he played some FS back at Texas
Damn!! Seattle franchised him last week. How'd I miss that?!

I'll be PISSED if we let Gibril go. He makes a massive difference on the d. It didnt get mentioned much in the season, but the games we really struggled were the games he missed, and when he came back the D tightened up again.
I like the idea of Hall/Webster corners and Ross saftey, its a real good idea but it just sounds too much like a Madden move to ever work in real life.

Couldn't agree more on all your points. Gibril comes up HUGE for the team time and time again. The struggle comes between Reese and the Maras. Mara likes the big name free agent signings and Reese like to cultivate young talent and hard working guys. Reese is a former scout so he likes the challenge of finding the diamonds in the rough rather then the flashy new toy on the market. I like Reese's way better. You nurture a young player and give them a chance when no one else will... that builds loyalty. Something the Giants organization prides themselves on. Look at something the Patriots organization... They're not loyal to their guys. Players know that if your last name isn't Brady, you're expendable. (Not you Kyle). That has to backfire eventually....oh wait... it did.
I say let Reese do his thing. He's stockpiling young hard working character type players who like playing for the team. And as far as Gibril... As KGB would say, "Pay dat m-yan his money"
Keep the first round pick and draft Dan Connor already! I read in every major mock draft that he's our guy. I'm really psyching myself up for a major let down by the way.

Last year, Knight and Wilson had nearly identical stats. Each had four interceptions and no sacks. Knight had 11 passes defensed and Wilson had seven. They’re pretty even over the last four years, too. Knight has 11 INTs, 25 PDs and four sacks. Wilson has 11 INTs, 19 PDs and six sacks.
Of course Wilson is six years younger and figures to be about $4.5 million per year more expensive.

A little off topic, but I finally watched the Super Bowl DVD. And I thought it really left a lot of good stuff out!! Normally NFL Films does a great job, but this was pretty mediocre.
No cunty Tiki criticism during the intro part? What about Jacobs spiking the ball into and killing the game clock in Tampa and Dallas? Why didn't they visually show David Akers' shank-aroo in Philly? Why'd they leave out Owens blubbering like the pussy he really is? No Peyton and Eli postgame locker conversation after the Super Bowl? Two seconds of parade footage in the credits?
All those events really were milestones/cornerstones of the season. NFL Films should have taken about another month to finish it up!!

Andrew Mills/The Star-LedgerI wonder if he's also "pretty jacked" about Coughlin's new deal.
Just a quick one here because I have to scoot, but wanted you to know that I spoke to someone today who has recently spoken to a member of Plaxico Burress' camp. The person said Plax is "pretty jacked" about Javon Walker's recent six-year, $55-million deal that included more than $16 million in guaranteed money.
Let me define "pretty jacked" for you in this context. It doesn't mean he's happy for Walker. It doesn't mean he's excited to be playing in a league in which guys are making that kind of money. And it doesn't mean he's muscular. It means he's pretty agitated that a guy who's only one year younger than him, is coming off an injury and had only two big seasons now has a contract worth more than twice Plax's deal from '05.
Again, not saying who's right or wrong. Just keeping you up to date on a situation that bears watching.

Giants lookin at David Carr to be a "veteran back-up" to Eli.
and strange Salary Cap deal with the Giants...
The Giants were also the victim of a somewhat obscure rule that actually adjusted their actual salary cap downward by $3 million based on performance bonuses from the previous year. Basically it works like this: If there were “likely to be earned” bonuses included the team’s 2007 salary total (their “cap number”) that weren’t actually earned, their 2008 cap is adjusted upwards. If bonuses were reached that weren’t included in team salary because they weren’t considered “likely to be earned” (Super Bowl bonuses, for example), the team’s cap is adjusted downwards.
So, even though the league’s unadjusted salary cap was set at $116,729,000, some teams had more room to spend. The Giants had less. In fact, the Giants’ actual cap was $113,632,488. Based on what I explained above, they were docked $3,098,512 off the 2008 cap before free agency even began.
damn...there are 19 teams out there who have more cap room than the Giants right now...and they still need to give raises to Plax, Osi, & probably Strahan (if he doesn't retire)

and don't forget extending Jacobs & Snee who become FA's after this season and next, respectively! Plus, you can bet that Diehl will want a LT contract soon! Use the cap money to get our guys extended and given raises where deserved, we don't need any FA splashes.

Giants 'on the Clock' (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3293577)
Giants' defense raided but not enough to slow it down
The Giants are Super Bowl champs, so times are good for Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning and Co. Repeating will be difficult, but the Giants are built for the long haul. Although their defense was raided a bit this offseason, this team remains intact for the most part. The defense, led by coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, should once again wreak havoc on quarterbacks. The Giants will have a huge bull's-eye on their chests this season and must deal with being the hunted rather than the hunter. That is easier said than done, especially in a brutal division like the NFC East. If Manning continues his impressive growth, this team will be among the NFL's elite again.
Key Additions
New York retained both its kicking specialists and signed veteran Sammy Knight as a stop-gap option for the departed Gibril Wilson at safety. These are far from exciting maneuvers, but punter Jeff Feagles is still playing at a high level, and the Giants desperately needed to add a safety to the mix before the draft. Knight is a low-end starter who is at his best near the line of scrimmage. He led the Jaguars in tackles last season and is a smart veteran who will help keep everyone aligned properly. But don't expect Knight to be a game-changing member of this defense. It is also noteworthy that the Giants signed Coughlin, who wisely changed his coaching style last season, to a long-term deal. This obviously is key for this team's long-term stability, as was locking up defensive end Justin Tuck before free agency opened. This offseason is similar to last year's, during which GM Jerry Reese did very little in free agency. But he then brought in an outstanding draft class that was instrumental in New York's title run.
Key Losses
As is the case with most Super Bowl teams, the rest of the league was aggressive in signing the Giants' free agents, particularly off their outstanding defense. Wilson is now in Oakland, LB Kawika Mitchell is in Buffalo and LB Reggie Torbor is in Miami. The two linebackers, however, are quite replaceable. The Giants will look to fill those spots in a draft filled with several solid prospects. Wilson was not tremendous, but he was a key cog to this defense and will be missed.
Remaining Questions
The Giants could use linebacker and secondary help, particularly at safety. This is not a strong safety draft, but linebacker help should be available, giving Spagnuolo another talented, versatile piece on the second level of this defense. The Giants could still lose Michael Strahan to retirement. If that happened, Mathias Kiwanuka likely would move back to defensive end, his more natural position. However, this would further weaken the linebacker corps. Adding a wide receiver and offensive-line depth would not be a bad idea either if a value selection emerges at these positions on draft day. Overall, the Giants are in very good shape.
Mock Draft: Giants OLB Jerod Mayo, Tennessee
Todd McShay: The Giants are in need of a legitimate upgrade at linebacker and Mayo possesses just the type of athleticism and versatility to find a nice niche within this unit.

Rich Seubert extended to 2012
Seubert, the Giants' starting left guard the past two seasons, signed a contract extension through the 2012 season today, according to someone familiar with the negotiations. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available.
Seubert, who turns 29 on Sunday, had two seasons remaining on his existing contract. After the Super Bowl win, he presented the Giants with a contract proposal that would allow him to finish his career with the team. Seubert's proposal also made his recent salary increases (from $1.05 million to $2 million this upcoming season) due to incentives reached more palatable for the Giants' salary cap because they'll now be converted into a signing bonus and spread over five years.
Seubert told the front office he understood his extension might mean he'll once again become a backup in the future. But the most important part of the deal for him was his being able to remain with an organization that has been loyal to him.

From ESPN...
Where's Jeremy Shockey? Still a member of the New York Giants.
New Orleans's apparent deal for tight end Jeremy Shockey has hit a delay because of the Giants' demand for more than a No. 2 draft pick for the former Pro Bowler, ESPN's John Clayton reports.
The Saints have been debating offering a No. 2 pick, according to sources, but some in the organization would prefer including no more than a No. 3 pick. New Orleans officials' reluctance makes the deal, which could get done on the draft-day clock or Saturday morning before the draft, difficult to pull off.
The Giants have already conducted a physical on Shockey, which could be offered to the Saints if he can't make it to New Orleans in time to have one. Sources indicate the Saints are seriously interested in Shockey, so a deal is likely to get done.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis this week has declined to discuss players under contract with any other team, and has been evasive while meeting with reporters at the Saints' training headquarters. He has apologetically said that he did not want to tip off other teams to the Saints' draft plans.
The 28-year-old Shockey, who earned the first NFL championship of his career in January, broke his leg on Dec. 16 in a game against the Washington Redskins and did not play in the Super Bowl.
He finished the 2007 regular season with 57 receptions and three touchdowns.
Information from ESPN.com's John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report.

I am really happy we got Manningham, but would have also liked to end up with Dan Connor. Maybe we have finally found the WR who can be a big game breaker, like Tim Carter could have been if he could have caught. And if his bones weren't made of paper mache. I dont know if I like the Terrell Thomas pick, but at least he is from a good program. I like Kenny Phillips alot though, his is real athletic and I think has a big upside.

04-28-2008, 10:54 AM
Agreed. Infuriated me that they passed up on Connor twice. They need a linebacker right? So instead of addressing one of their main concerns in round two, they blow a fourth and a fifth round pick on two linebackers who roughly equal one Connor in my eyes.
And why take a QB? Didn't we sign Carr? What about J-Load? Anthony Wright?
To me they wasted three picks. Manningham could turn out to be a steal as long as he straightens up. He's not big, but he's a big play maker and has been for a while. That was actually the pick I liked the most because it was a high risk/reward pick. But to me it looks riskier because they didn't address their main needs right away. To me the two linebackers they drafted after Manningham look like an "oops, we forgot, better make up for that second round pick."
Honestly though - what am I complaining about? We just won a Superbowl.
At least we're not Eagles fans this morning - ewwwww.
I LOVE the Woodson pick, so much. Let him be the 3 for two years so he can pick up the pro offense. Then you have a very capable backup.

Diehl gets extended (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3383997)
Giants pay Diehl for successfully tackling new role
Replacing Luke Petitgout as the Giants left tackle, David Diehl proved he was the real deal and helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLII. Diehl's reward is a new deal that compensates him for the importance of protecting Eli Manning's blindside.
The Giants recently ripped up the former left guard's old contract and rewarded him with a new six-year, $31 million contract. The key to the deal is annual escalator clauses that increase Diehl's salaries between $750,000 and $1.1 million a year as long as he plays offensive tackle.
It's rare for a team to redo a long-term deal toward the beginning of the contract. Diehl was entering the third year of a six-year, $15.5 million extension he signed in 2005 that was scheduled to expire in 2011.
But Diehl was in a rare situation. He made the tough transition from left guard to left tackle and performed at close to a Pro Bowl-caliber level. Since coming to the Giants six years ago, Diehl has started 80 consecutive games. With the exception of Petitgout's release last year, the Giants offensive line has grown together for four seasons and has evolved into one of the NFL's better blocking units.
Aside from his play, Diehl won over Giants management by the way he's handled the transition and his ensuing success. The new contract was signed before the draft, but Diehl kept it to himself.

According to Strahan, the Giants’ players (and executives, and anyone remotely associated with the team) will receive their Super Bowl rings in a private ceremony on May 29. From what I’ve heard, more than 200 rings will be given out (53 players plus guys on the practice squad, scouts, coaches, front office staff, medical staff, equipment staff, etc., etc. …). The players’ rings – which I think are different from the rings given out to others – are valued at more than $10,000 each.
By the way, Strahan showed me a photo of the ring that had been doctored by a friend of his to include blue in the “ny” logo on the top of the ring. Now that looked sharp. The blue in the logo really stood out amid all the diamonds. That’s the way they should’ve been done in the first place, instead of the all-white-gold, all-diamond look the players chose.

the title defense will happen.... minus Michael Strahan, who is retiring.
The New York Giants will begin their road to a defense of their Super Bowl title when mini-camp begins on Wednesday. That defense, however, will be attempted without the services of their team leader Michael Strahan.
Strahan has told FOXSports.com exclusively that he has decided to retire.
...
"It was important that my teammates knew which way I was going before they got on the field to start the work to defend our title," the team's all-time sack leader said from California. "It's time. I'm done."

hat's off to Strahan going out on top. he's undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and you just know he's got a career in color commentary ahead of him. though the Giants lose him, they've still got Osi, Tuck, and Alford up front, all of whom are scary motherfuckers to any O-line.

I don't think they've said what they were planning on doing as far as Kiwi's concerned...He's apparently doing quite well at linebacker, so they may keep him there. They did sign Reynaldo Wynn, so they're not desperate to have him back at DE. I'm interested in seeing how Kehl & Pope(?), the LB's we drafted, fare in camp.
speaking of camp...Plaxico expects contract "situation" resolved before camp (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3451661)
Not practicing at mandatory minicamp created an uproar, but Plaxico Burress thinks his contract situation will be peacefully resolved before next month's training camp.
The New York Giants wide receiver wants a new deal and he told WIP radio in Philadelphia on Tuesday that he thinks it will happen. Camp begins at the University at Albany on July 25.
"Honestly, I think my situation is going to be rectified before training camp," Burress said, according to NJ.com. "I'm not going to worry about it, but I did state that I was unhappy with my current situation with my contract. It'll be worked out."
Burress, who caught a game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining in the Super Bowl to give the Giants a 17-14 win over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots, has three years remaining his six-year, $25 million deal. He will earn $3.25 million this year, $3.5 million in 2009 and $3.75 million in 2010.
But after big deals for Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Javon Walker, Burress wants a raise. But he also wants to stay in New York.
"I don't want to go anywhere. I made that very evident," Burress told the radio station, according to NJ.com. "If I wanted to go somewhere else or if I didn't want to be there, I would have let that be known, too.
Moss, Owens and Walker have worn three different uniforms in their careers. Burress said he doesn't want that.
"I love the situation I'm in, I love the guys I play with, I love the city and I just love everything about me playing football up there," he told the station. "I just want to end my career there. I don't want to travel all around the globe trying to play football. I'll be 31 in August, so I just want to play my last five or six years there and end my career there and hopefully win another championship."

I can't wait for opener against the Skins. I'll be in either 102 row 17 or 328 row 22 all season. See you animals there!

Adam Shefter on Sirius radio is reporting that Snee signed a 6 year extension.
edit - and now its all over the place. Garafolo's blog: http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2008/06/breaking_news_giants_extend_sn.html
The Giants and right guard Chris Snee have agreed in principle to a six-year contract extension that will keep one of the NFL's best young linemen in blue through the 2014 season, according to someone familiar with the progress of negotiations. The person, who requested anonymity because the deal hasn't been signed and announced by the team, did not provide financial details but said Snee will now be among the top five highest-paid players at his position.
Snee, coach Tom Coughlin's son-in-law, was scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the coming season. The Giants second-round pick in 2004 (one round after the team selected QB Eli Manning, has started 59 of 64 regular-season games since winning a starting job in his rookie training camp.
More to come on this.

Booooooooo seat licenses (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-giants-seatlicenses&prov=ap&type=lgns)
Giants fans to dig deep for seats in new stadium
The New York Giants will charge fans between $1,000 and $20,000 for the right to buy season tickets in the new stadium they are building with the New York Jets.
The Jets have not said if they plan to sell personal seat licenses, but Thursday’s announcement makes it appear inevitable both teams will do so.
The Jets did not immediately return a call.
Giants co-owner John Mara said most of the 82,500 seats in the stadium, scheduled to open in 2010, will carry seat license fees of $1,000. Less than 5,000 seats will carry license fees of $20,000.
Mara acknowledged he is worried about angering longtime fans of the Super Bowl champions. The charge applies to each seat a ticket-holder owns.
“We tried hard to come up with a plan that guarantees everybody the opportunity to stay in the building,” he said.
He said it would be “extremely difficult” to build the $1.6 billion stadium in the Meadowlands—whose cost is being split evenly by the two teams— without asking fans to help pay for it through seat licenses. Mara said the license fees will raise $300 million to $400 million.
Personal seat licenses are used by team owners to build stadiums. The one-time payments guarantee the buyer the right to control the seat for as long as the team plays in that stadium, and can be transferred or sold for whatever the market will bear. Besides paying once for the seat license, fans still have to pay the cost of season tickets each year.

If anyone has John Mara's email address, he needs cock pictures. I hope the fucker dies a slow death in a construction accident at his $1.6 billion dollar stadium. I've had 4 tickets in my family for 45 years. Now it's going to cost me $40K to keep them, on top of the $50 per ticket, per game increase. Fuck you John Mara. :mad4:
Giants now no different
Friday, July 18, 2008
In an era when most pro sports franchises treated fans like human ATMs, available for cash withdrawal 24 hours a day, the Giants were different. They operated like an old-fashioned family business, one that valued their customers' loyalty over the size of their bank accounts.
That's gone now. Maybe your first reaction to the news that the Giants would charge up to $20,000 for personal seat licenses was outrage. Without question, PSLs are one of the great rip-offs in sports, a one-time fee for the privilege to cough up more cash to buy tickets.
But for me, the feeling was sadness. The Giants are selling off a large part of what made them unique. For decades, they were a mom-and-pop shop that just happened to be part of the richest sports league on the planet.
Now, if you've had four seats near the goal line since Giants Stadium opened in 1976, that shop will soon charge you $40,000 for the PSLs and $5,600 for the season tickets to keep them. There's another option: Move to the upper deck and "only" shell out $4,000 for the PSLs and $3,400 for the tickets.
The team blames the current financial crisis and soaring construction costs in the new $1.6 billion stadium. But will the bells and whistles of the new building really be worth a second mortgage to the average fan?
"This is no way to treat the fans," *** Freyland said yesterday. The Bergen County resident has had his tickets since the team played in the Yale Bowl in the early '70s, and plans to pay the $1,000 fee to keep them. Still, he feels betrayed. "This isn't the way the Giants used to do business."
The proof was on display before every game. Walk around the Meadowlands parking lot, visit the first tailgate you see, and you might find a fan like Jerry Foley. He signed up for the soon-to-be-irrelevant season-ticket waiting list in the early 1990s, and after barely moving an inch for years, realized he'd be an old man before he actually got tickets.
So he sent team patriarch Wellington Mara a three-page letter explaining how he bled Giants blue, how every game day he would tailgate in Lot 13-A with a bullhorn to lead fans in cheers. He closed with this kicker: "All I want in life are healthy kids and Giants tickets."
A few weeks later, he got a call from Mara's office -- he was getting his season tickets. Writing a letter won't work any more. Now, fans will have to sign a check, one with a lot of zeroes, maybe to one of the ticket brokers that will gobble up all the PSLs they can find in search of a profit.
Wellington Mara is gone now, but his memory lives on with fans -- and in angry letters to his son. John Mara called the decision to sell PSLs "the hardest one -- by far" of his career running the Giants, made most difficult by the letters that tell him his father would never have done this.
"That phrase gets to me," Mara, the team's CEO, said in a phone interview yesterday. "They know where my sore point is. And they're probably right. But he didn't have to face this size of debt, either. ... As the costs went up, there was no other way of doing this."
Mara did not want to do this. He was about as fair as you can be when asking fans to subsidize your billion-dollar business. He could have charged much more -- just take a look at what the Dallas Cowboys are doing at their new stadium, where the most expensive PSLs are $150,000.
In some cases, the Giants will be handing fans, who choose to sell their PSLs, a tidy severance package for their years of fandom. The team is asking fans not to view the PSLs as an investment, but there's little doubt some will jump on the chance to sell them for several times what they cost now.
Hey, the team is trying to make a quick buck off them. Why shouldn't they do the same?
The crowd at Giants games is going to change dramatically, and so is the way the fans feel about this franchise. And don't think for a minute that Jets owner Woody Johnson is going to be a hero and pass on the PSLs. That announcement of the Jets' plans is no doubt coming soon, which means fans from the two teams will pick up a significant chunk of that $1.6 billion price tag.
This is how it works in pro sports. It's not your loyalty that matters to teams any more, it's the size of your wallet. For most of their existence, the Giants were an exception. Not any more.

I talked to my "financial adviser" and he's come up with the solution for me. Purchase all 4 licenses now at $10K each, then flip two of them for $40K in 2011. This way I'll still have 2 tickets, make a 100% profit on the other two, and still have $20K invested "in the bank' on my two tickets that I keep. Plan "B" is flip all 4 licenses in 2011 for $80K, and watch the games at home in HD.
Sorry, you'll still be paying out your ass. Just a lot more.

Training Camp opens on Thursday, first practice is Friday (http://www.nypost.com/seven/07202008/sports/giants/champing_at_the_bit_120650.htm)
Champing at the Bit
Ears ringing with praise, Giants to begin repeat bid
Never before have the Giants arrived on the campus of the University at Albany as Super Bowl champions, and they've been heading upstate for training camp since 1996. As the start of a new preseason arrives, what, pray tell, can the Giants do for an encore?
"Let's get better," Eli Manning said.
Indeed, improvement is on the minds of the Giants as they report Thursday and hit the field Friday morning for their first practice. It will be a 24-night stay - slightly shorter than usual - and during that time the Giants will hear early and often how their rousing playoff upsets, culminating in the astounding 17-14 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, were so inspirational and unexpected. How the Giants balance those wonderful memories with the mundane and grind of a hot, sweaty camp should go a long way in determining how productive their stay will be.
"Last year is OVER," cornerback Corey Webster said. "Time to start working toward a new goal for this team right here. It's a different team than we had last year, new people, totally different year. We start from the bottom and try to work our way back to the top."
After a fairly turbulent offseason, the Giants might not confront many glaring summertime issues. They must replace defensive end Michael Strahan, who for the bulk of his 15 years dominated on the field and off it with his oversized personality.
All eyes and ears on the very first day will be on tight end Jeremy Shockey, initially to see if he even shows up, and afterward to gauge his attitude and physical health. The only way Shockey will defuse all the negativity swirling around him is if he reports to camp, puts his bitterness behind him, and shows his surgically-repaired leg and ankle can withstand the pounding.
There are others to watch: Plaxico Burress wants more money and likely will get it before camp. If not, in fairly non-threatening terms he said he might not participate in practice. There will be a battle for the backup quarterback job, with reclamation project David Carr hoping to fend off Anthony Wright. The defensive starting unit needs to find a new weak side linebacker to replace Kawika Mitchell, who signed with the Bills. Gerris Wilkinson is the favorite to win the job, with free-agent addition Danny Clark also in the mix.
"I definitely feel like [the coaches] feel it's my time to be there," Wilkinson said.
The competition for the starting safety spots figures to be intense, with two newcomers (veteran Sammy Knight and rookie first-round pick Kenny Phillips) looking to unseat returning players James Butler and Michael Johnson.
"I didn't win a Super Bowl," said Knight, a veteran of 11 NFL seasons. "I take my hat off to them. For me coming in, it's like kind of riding the wave a little bit. For me, man, I'm hungry, if anything it's that added incentive for me - I can smell it, I'll see the ring, I see the banners, it pushes me that much more, especially seeing the joy these guys have from winning that Super Bowl."
In addition to monitoring Shockey's mindset and health, two other players coming off broken legs - linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka and running back Derrick Ward - will also look to make strong comebacks. Super Bowl hero David Tyree is coming off knee surgery and likely will be limited at the start of camp.
The Giants are scheduled for 29 practice sessions, with 10 two-a-day workouts, including eight night practices. Unlike previous years, the team will break camp prior to the second preseason game. Usually, the Giants break camp before the traditional third preseason game against the Jets.

Giants PLAYER AUTOGRAPH NIGHT
On Monday, July 28th the Giants football team will spend time signing for the fans immediately following the evening practice. Practice begins at 6:10 pm. When the practice is over (practice usually lasts about two hours), Coach Coughlin will ask all the players to stay after and sign autographs for all of the fans. The players will then proceed to various areas of the fence and autograph alley (the walkway the players take back to their facility). In the past, players have signed autographs for about 20-30 minutes. In order to maximize the number of fans reached, the players do not typically sign more than one item. Cameras are permitted at practice, however, the fence around where the players practice prohibits any staged photographs during the autograph session. Come see your favorite Giants practice and stay for autograph opportunities!
Giants YOUTH DAY
On Monday, August 11th the Giants are hosting Giants YOUTH DAY at Training Camp. Come watch your favorite players get ready for the 2008 season! Practice begins at 2:40 pm. Fans can enjoy the day's youth focused activities including the youth football inflatable area. Following the afternoon practice, young Giants fans and their families can stay to enjoy an interactive Giants program. Since this event is all about our young Giants fans, there will be giveaways, face painters, an expanded football inflatables area, skill contests, staged drills and more! At the start of the program, a player will head over to the center of the Stadium Field where kids can see him and take pictures from the bleachers (Aaron Ross, R.W. McQuarters, and Sam Madison have all attended the event in past years)! There are no autograph opportunities during this program; however, there will be special raffles for children to win autographed Giants memorabilia. The after practice program will last for about 30 minutes, which is entirely dependant on the players post-practice regimens.
Giants Albany Idol: New and Improved!
Come out and watch contestants compete for the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the Giants pre-season game on August 28th vs. the Patriots! The competition begins at the start of the evening practice at 6:10 pm on Tuesday, August 12th. In a new and improved format, the finalists from 104.5 the Buzz's radio contest will sing their favorite song for one minute. The group will then be broken down to a select few who will then sing the National Anthem, competing for the chance to sing on August 28th. Contestants compete on the Stadium Field and there will be a special Giants celebrity guest judge. There will be giveaways and raffles so be sure to come out and support your favorite singer! Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at Giants Stadium? Click here to find out more about how you can sign up and be the next Giants Albany Idol.
Past and Present Brunch
The 3rd annual Past and Present Event will be held on August 10th after the 8:40 am practice. Jessie Armstead and Chris Calloway will be the alumni hosts for the VIP viewing of practice and the brunch. There will be a Q&A session and autograph opportunities with them. Tickets are $125 and available on a limited first come, first serve, basis. Please call (201) 935-8111 x3030 to reserve your spot.
Gatorade Beat the Heat
Gatorade will be promoting the "Beat the Heat" program, highlighting the importance of keeping hydrated during summer activities. The program features a partnership with the Kendrick Fincher Foundation, an organization named after a young football player who died from heatstroke during football two-a-days and is dedicated to heat safety education. Keep an eye out for these kiosks and Donation Days, where fans can donate money to support proper hydration.

There's a potential that the Giants could wind up with the Saints 1st round pick instead of their 2nd. Here's how...
Saints traded their 4th rounder in '08 & a conditional second-or-third in '09 to the Jets for Vilma. If Vilma plays 85% of their defensive plays & signs a contract w/ the Saints, the Jets would wind up getting their 2nd round pick in 2009.
Since that trade happened first, the Jets would get the 2nd round pick. As a result, the Saints would have to send their 2010 first round pick to the Giants to make up for not being able to live up to their part of the Shockey trade

Plaxico still not happy w/ his contract, but will NOT hold out (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3500077)
Report: Burress upset with contract talks but won't hold out from camp
One Giant headache is gone now that Jeremy Shockey has been traded to the Big Easy. Plaxico Burress is trying to assure the Giants he won't become another one for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Burress, who has been campaigning for a new contract, told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., that he will report to training camp on time when it begins Thursday.
"I'm going to be at camp. I'm going to get out and practice," Burress told The Star-Ledger. "I said that I may not have, but the smarter thing for me to do is to show up and show my teammates I'm ready to play football."
That doesn't, however, mean he'll be a happy camper.
"It shouldn't have gotten to this point. It just shows me as a person how important I really am to them," Burress told the newspaper. "This thing's a two-way street. It's not a one-way. … It just opens your eyes a little bit to the people you're walking around with. You look them in the face and they smile at you."
Burress told the newspaper that he remains hopeful that a new deal can be agreed on. However, sources told the New York Daily News that the two sides remain far apart in negotiations.
Burress, who caught a game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining in the Super Bowl to give the Giants a 17-14 win over the previously unbeaten New England Patriots, has three years remaining on his six-year, $25 million deal. He will earn $3.25 million this year, $3.5 million in 2009 and $3.75 million in 2010.
But after big deals for Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Javon Walker, Burress wants a raise.
However, one source told the Daily News that the Giants "have gone about as far as they're willing to go."
Agent Drew Rosenhaus also says his client will report to camp on time, however.
"I don't think that we've ever had discussions about him holding out," Rosenhaus told the Daily News. "That's not him. Plaxico will be at camp regardless of the status of the negotiations. We've been able to separate the negotiations from what Plax has to do for the team."
Burress missed five team meetings in last month's minicamp and, according to the Star-Ledger, was fined $42,000. Shockey, who was traded to the New Orleans Saints on Monday, also was fined $25,000 by the team for "conduct detrimental to the team," the newspaper reported.
According to the Star-Ledger, Shockey spent the entire minicamp inside Giants Stadium while his teammates were practicing outside. Coach Tom Coughlin told reporters that Shockey wasn't excused from practicing with the team. The newspaper reported that it's unclear whether Shockey was fined for sitting out the practices or for his reported screaming match with general manager Jerry Reese.

From the "No Shit" Department...
Coughlin: Shockey's attitude led to trade to Saints (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3502417)
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Two days after the Super Bowl champions traded disgruntled four-time Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey, Giants coach Tom Coughlin kicked off training camp on Wednesday by stressing the importance of the team over the individual.
"I think what my position will be and what I think the team will be ready to accept is the fact that the reason we won was because of team," Coughlin said a day before players reported to the University at Albany. "Team over self was why we won."
Coughlin believes the team mantra played into Shockey's desire to leave the organization after six productive years, ending up with the New Orleans Saints.
"I think that with the quality of the individuals that we have, the character of our team, that they certainly are going to realize that the attitude about believing in one another, about supporting one another, about the idea of taking the names off the back of the jerseys, that is what served us best last year," Coughlin said.
In other areas, Coughlin said:
• The Giants are ready for the challenge of being targeted this season.
• Receiver David Tyree, whose phenomenal catch led to the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl -- is not close to being ready to go following offseason knee surgery.
• The team hopes no action will be taken by the NFL against running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who was jailed for a month this summer on an old probation violation.
Coughlin spent most of the opening minutes of his news conference talking about Shockey, who missed the playoffs with a broken leg and then complained about his role in the offense in the weeks after the stunning upset of the New England Patriots.
"Jeremy Shockey is an excellent football player," Coughlin said. "He is an individual who loved the game, loved to play the game, was a good physical blocker, and a guy when he caught the ball and had it in his hands could make things happen."
However, Shockey was also a distraction that neither Coughlin nor team executives would tolerate. Hence, their willingness to accept second- and fifth-round draft picks from the Saints as compensation, saying it was in the best interests of the team and Shockey, 27, a former first-round draft pick.
Shockey didn't just complain. He accused the team of leaking information to the media. While nursing a badly sprained ankle, he refused to even make a token appearance on the field during a veteran minicamp in June and then got into a shouting match with general manager Jerry Reese.
It all resulted in the trade just days before the opening of camp. It was a deal that surprised teammates and even tight ends coach Mike Pope, who learned of it while flying into Newark Liberty International Airport.
Pope said he believes that in some cases a player can be in one place too long.
"I think the circumstances that happened with the injury and the things that went on in his mind -- having to sit and watch the Super Bowl and watch the team continue to succeed -- I don't think his worth in his own mind diminished, but I think he realized, as this organization realized, the fans and all you folks realized, that organizations and teams can keep moving when individuals aren't there," Pope said.
Pope said he spoke to Shockey several times but was unable to get him to reconcile with the team.
Pope said it will be hard to replace the contributions Shockey made to the running game, but he hopes that second-year pro Kevin Boss, who has gained 20 pounds in the offseason, will step up this season.
The goal for the Giants will be to avoid the problems that have plagued recent Super Bowl winners. New York has failed to get back to the playoffs in the three seasons after they appeared in the title game.
Coughlin plans to discuss that in his first meeting with the players, while reminding them that hard work got them a title last season.
"No one ever gave us or anybody else anything and we don't expect it," he said. "We are not asking for anything."
Pope remembers the challenges from the previous years-after.
"We will be challenged like most of these players can't even imagine," Pope said. "It is going to be undeniably the hardest year in their short careers and they are going to find that out very quickly."

I think that Boss Mathews and Johnson will be able to replace Shockey. I liked shockey but he seemed liked he wanted it to be about him. When Barber retired they didn't just rely on 1 running back, they used 3 they should do the same with the TE's . I do hope they eventually resign Burress because he 's been a key player and he has definitely change since he's been on the Giants. Meaning he's not like shockey or the way he was in Pitt. Giants' Bradshaw Will Spend ANOTHER 30 Days in jail (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Giants-Bradshaw-will-serve-another-30-days-in-j?urn=nfl,97719)
According to a story today in the Bristol Herald-Courier Ahmad Bradshaw's recent 30-day stint in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon, Va., was actually only the first of two 30-day terms he's scheduled to serve. The second, according to the report, will be served by the New York Giants running back, next offseason.
The story is fascinating and digs a little deeper into the mystery surrounding Bradshaw's jail term, which has never fully been explained. According to his lawyer, the Giants' running back was jailed due to a violation of a probation from an incident that occurred when he was a juvenile. And both the lawyer and the Giants insist that the incident occurred before he was drafted by his current team. Virginia authorities have been uncooperative with the media, and Bradshaw has refused to speak to the press since camp opened. The NFL, meanwhile, is investigating the incident and has not ruled out the possibility that Bradshaw could be suspended for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.
According to various sources, the reason for the mystery is that authorities in Virginia screwed up. The sources insist that the incident that triggered the probation was the infamous incident in 2006 when Bradshaw, then at Marshall, stole a PlayStation from a teammate. Apparently when he was convicted, the state overlooked the fact that the crime was a violation of a previous probation. Apparently sometime during the Super Bowl run, when Bradshaw's story was told over and over again in the press, someone realized the oversight and informed authorities. Then a deal was struck for Bradshaw to serve the time he should've served in 2006.

should be a big game for the extra WRs - Moss, Hixon, Hall, etc. Those 3 (along with Tyree) are fighting for 2 (possibly 3, depending on how the roster shapes up) spots.

IN A PERFECT WORLD, the hat would be sitting on Tom Brady's mantle and the woman holding the hat in an impoverished and remote village in Central America would still have her teeth.
. (Globe Photo / Todd Vachon)
. (Aaron Kaplowitz)
But there is perfect and there is near perfect, and the slightest difference explains how I came to be standing in a puddle of mud, carefully balancing a 75-pound purple backpack on my shoulders in San Gregorio, Nicaragua, urging my new best friend Hannibal to assure the toothless woman that we were serious about giving her actual money for this hat.
When the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII, the loss kept the Patriots from finishing the season a perfect 19-0. With the game's outcome in question until the final play, the NFL had both Giants and Patriots Super Bowl champions apparel ready on the field for the victorious team's players, leaving nothing to chance when cameras captured the first celebratory shots. Reebok and the NFL added an extra touch to the Patriots' championship shirts, a testament to the team's storied place in history. A "19-0 Perfect Season" patch was sewn onto the hats, and the T-shirts carried the same message.
So when the 18-1 Patriots failed to live up to Reebok's prophecy, World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, arranged to ship the memorabilia to people in need in nearly inaccessible places, ensuring that these treasured items would not see the light of day back in the States.
But with a trip to Panama and Costa Rica already in the offing, Ilan, my roommate at Boston University, and I, both lifelong Giants fans, decided that dipping into Nicaragua for a few days to try and get our hands on the rare collectors' items was a necessary addition to our itinerary. And a way for us to stick it one last time to our friends in Boston who were still crying over the Super Bowl.
OUR ADVENTURE started in Managua. For a dollar each, we ducked into a microbus for the one-hour drive to Diriamba, the town that had been reported as the destination for the Patriots gear. They packed 17 riders into 14 seats, with one generous traveler angling his body out of the window. Squished against a grimy window in the back row, I jockeyed for leg space while squabbling with Ilan about the absurdity of our trek.
"We don"t speak a lick of Spanish," I yelled to him over the engine noise. "How are we going to do this without an interpreter?"
"Relax," he said.
"Do you expect all the villagers to just walk around wearing these shirts and hats?" I said.
"Relax. We'll figure it out."
The teenager wedged between us shot me a perplexed look, probably cursing the karma that got him sandwiched between two bombastic schmoes from New Jersey.
As if on cue, our fellow passengers turned around in unison, scrutinizing us. They became animated and argumentative. We had no idea what they were saying, but it became clear that money was at the root of it. The man sitting in front of Ilan turned around and told him that we had to pay an extra dollar for our massive backpacks.
It turned out that Lawrence was an oral surgeon in training who was born in Nicaragua and had become a fan of American football while living in New Orleans and Tampa. We told him about our quest for the Patriots hats and shirts that were sent to Diriamba. He said we were crazy, but offered to take us to his in-laws' pharmacy in Diriamba, where someone might be able to help.
Once there, we humped our backpacks through the streets, searching for signs of Patriots perfection on every corner. Lawrence's wife seemed confused by her husband's bizarre posse, but welcomed us into her parents' store. They made several calls on our behalf, but no one seemed to know about World Vision's gift.
Ilan and Lawrence disappeared into a back room to scan the Internet for more clues while I waited with the bags. Suddenly, Ilan rushed into the room.
"We know where it is," he said, grabbing his backpack.
Ilan and Lawrence had watched a video imbedded in a Time.com (http://time.com/) article that mentioned World Vision taking the hats and shirts to San Gregorio, 8 kilometers away. We navigated our way to the bus station.
As our microbus bumped and slid for 45 minutes along the mucky road connecting Diriamba and San Gregorio, I caught a glimpse of a man trudging up the road wearing a blue and white Patriots Super Bowl Champions hat. We were on our way.
San Gregorio's mud-soaked road farted underneath our sinking feet as a flock of teenage boys descended upon us like vultures encircling a carcass. We were scouring the area trying to find someone -- anyone -- who spoke English when we met Jose Samuels.
Standing on his porch, Samuels introduced himself in broken English, hoping to understand why two disoriented foreigners were pointing to kids' shirts while repeatedly pantomiming a football-like throw. He welcomed us into his one-room home and offered us coffee. I began explaining the purpose of our mission. He looked confused.
While Ilan waited with the bags, I followed Jose down San Gregorio's main road. We turned up a trail in time to meet a cow herd lumbering toward us. Jose never flinched, leading me to a patio where a group of women were settling into their creaky rocking chairs. Jose disappeared into the dilapidated dwelling.
When he returned, 6-year-old Luna was by his side. Luna took one look at me and understood why her uncle had brought her outside.
"What are you looking for?" she asked me in perfect, unaccented English.
"Where did you learn English?" I replied.
Luna explained she was from Morristown, New Jersey, just 15 minutes from my own home. She and her mother were visiting family in San Gregorio. Luna got excited at the mention of the New York Giants but didn't know where I could find the shirts, nor did any of her relatives.
I RETURNED WITH JOSE to his home, where Ilan was sitting with the Samuels family. Ilan and I lugged our bags out of Jose's house and found some villagers who thought that the shirts were available at the church. We were nearing the battered church's doorway when a grungy young man on horseback approached us.
"Ingles," he said.
"Ingles," we repeated.
The guy on the horse pointed to a slight man in sagging blue jeans and a stained polo shirt, who introduced himself in clear English as Hannibal. According to Hannibal, he had fled Nicaragua in the '80s, sneaking into the United States after the Sandinista National Liberation Front ousted the Somoza regime. Hannibal told us that he had gotten married in Los Angeles, where his wife and children still lived, but that he was deported several years ago when his lawyer failed to renew his immigration documents.
He offered to help us, and soon we were accosting villager after villager, receiving new information and hot leads each time. We snaked our way through the back roads and happened upon a young woman sitting at a rectangular entry carved into a chicken-wire fortress. Hannibal spoke to her, then waved Ilan and me inside, where I saw people standing around a circular pavilion, looking into a dirt pit enclosed by long wooden boards, and I heard a frantic cacophony of clawing, clucking, and banging. Only then did I realize that I was standing among roosters being trained for cockfights.
Walking past the furious birds, we made our way to a counter where a teenage girl was selling beer. Jessica told Hannibal she used to have a Patriots shirt but didn't know where she had put it. Besides, she said, why would we want it? The XXL-sized shirts were too big for humans.
I glanced at my watch. It was 4:30 p.m. Hannibal told me the final bus out of San Gregorio left at 5.
Hannibal quickly led us to a row of one-room hovels, where we met a wrinkled woman sitting outside in a mint-green dress and a white apron. Her warm smile revealed a mouth lacking teeth. Hannibal and the woman talked for a few minutes. I reminded Hannibal that we were willing to pay money for a hat or shirt. The woman entered her shack and returned with a black plastic bag.
My fingers curled with anticipation as Ilan removed a fresh, clean shirt and a never-worn hat. This could have been Brady's. This should have been Brady's.
The woman couldn't believe we were willing to pay money for these things. We gave her $5, a sizable amount in the area, and handed Hannibal an equal finder's fee before sprinting down the road as the bus began to gain speed out of town. The driver slowed to let us on.
On the bus, I studied the "19-0 Perfect Season" hat and pointed out to Ilan the line etched into the red and blue Velcro strap: "WE WANTED IT MORE."
Not as much as we did.

Shit, very not good news courtesy of Garafolo: http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2008/08/ny_giants_rookie_lb_goff_suffe.html
DETROIT - Rookie LB Jonathan Goff suffered a back injury in tonight's game against the Lions.
Goff, the team's fifth-round pick in April, suffered a fractured transverse process in the second quarter of tonight's game against the Lions. That's (potentially) a bad injury. It was exactly what former Giants DE Adrian Awasom suffered last year against the Packers when he collided with OL Tony Palmer on a kickoff. Awasom was out for the season after only two games.
The transverse process is a bone that juts off the vertebrae and links the spine to muscle.
More to come on this. I don't want to guess that Goff's season is already over, but that might be the case. We'll see.
9:03 p.m. UPDATE This is probably going to depend on the severity of the fracture. Just found a few examples of guys missing a few games while other guys were done for the year. So we won't jump to conclusions.
9:06 p.m. UPDATE And this link says the average time lost is 3.5 weeks, so maybe he'll be okay. Again, we'll see.
9:34 p.m. UPDATE Posted this in a comment below but wanted to add here: In the quick research I've done here, it seems the location of the injury will be key. With Awasom it was in his neck. With other guys who had it in their lower back (Edgerrin James in 2003), it was only a few weeks. Will find out the location after the game if I can.

Kenny Phillips looked really good tonight. He made me feel okay about losing Gibril, I think he'll he just fine. He made some really solid tackles, and he seems like he can fly around the field. I also am excited we picked up Craphonso Thorpe, he was explosive at FSU and if he makes the team, we could have a good balance of possession guys (Toomer, Smith, Plax) and speedy playmakers (Manningham, Moss and Thorpe).
So pumped for the season.

Tynes to have exploratory surgery on knee (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=txgiantstynes&prov=st&type=lgns)
Giants K Tynes to have surgery Friday
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY (TICKER) —New York Giants placekicker Lawrence Tynes will miss his second straight preseason game Saturday night - and perhaps a lot longer.
The Star-Ledger reported that Tynes will undergo exploratory surgery on his left knee Friday that will determine how much time he is expected to miss.
Citing three sources with direct knowledge of the injury who wished to remain anonymous, the newspaper reported it is possible that Friday’s procedure could reveal an injury severe enough to land Tynes on season-ending injured reserve.
Following Thursday’s practice, coach Tom Coughlin said there was no update on Tynes, who also sat out Monday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns.
“I don’t know what to tell you there,” Coughlin said. “He says he is (better), but they haven’t given him the green light.”
Josh Huston will replace Tynes in the lineup Saturday. He converted all five extra points against the Browns but missed his only field goal attempt from 42 yards.
Last season, the 30-year-old Tynes kicked a 47-yard field goal in overtime to beat the Green Bay Packers in the NFC championship game and send the Giants to the Super Bowl. He was rewarded with a five-year, $7 million contract extension in February.
But Coughlin said he has no idea if Tynes will be ready for the regular-season opener vs. Washington on September 4.
“Right now, we need to know at least what the expectation is,” Coughlin said.

Some good news for New York Giants K Tynes?

Lawrence Tynes' exploratory arthroscopic surgery today on his knee revealed no structural damage, according to Giants vice president of communications Pat Hanlon.
The soreness in his knee will continue to be rehabilitated, but the kicker who lifted the Giants into Super Bowl XLII with a winning 47-yard field goal in the NFC Championship Game might well not face the prospect of being out of action for the entire season.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Osi Umenyiora will need surgery on his injured knee and miss the entire 2008 season.
The details of Umenyiora's injury and surgery are unknown, but this is a huge loss. The Giants could handle Michael Strahan retiring because of Justin Tuck, but losing Umenyiora will force them to either move linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka to right end or start old journeyman Renaldo Wynn there. Tuck will likely see more double teams on the strong side now, hurting his IDP value

here's the espn story
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3551499
The defending Super Bowl champion Giants reportedly will likely have to play this season without one of their best pash rushers.
The Star-Ledger, citing an unnamed source, reported Sunday that Osi Umenyiora (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4514) suffered serious ligament damage in his left knee Saturday night that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season. The Pro Bowl star defensive end will have surgery, the newspaper reported, rather than try to rehabilitate the injury.
X-rays taken during the Jets' 10-7 win were negative. An MRI took place on Sunday.
"I talked to him when he was in the locker room, in the training room," fellow defensive end Justin Tuck (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8488) said Saturday of a halftime exchange. "Obviously, he was down. It's unfortunate when any injury occurs, but hopefully, it is nothing serious and he will not miss any time."
Umenyiora left the locker room before the game ended and was not available for comment.
Umenyiora told Tuck that "he was good," Tuck said.
The two-time Pro Bowler was hurt with 10:48 left in the half on a third-down incomplete pass by the Jets' Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=112).
Defensive tackle Barry Cofield (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9710) did not get a chance to talk to Umenyiora but he recalled the play.
"It looked like he was turning the corner and just kind of took an awkward step," Cofield said Saturday. "The turf is hard and playing at that speed on that edge, you can tweak things."
The 26-year-old could not put any weight on his leg. He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Saturday that Umenyiora was in pain.
"The doctors told me there was no ligament damage," Coughlin said when pressed.
Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks. He added seven tackles in the Giants' run to the Super Bowl.
The Giants are a bit thin at defensive end this season with the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=495). Tuck has replaced Strahan. New York also signed veteran Renaldo Wynn (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1206) in the offseason.
With Umenyiora sidelined, the Giants could move strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9618) back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.
"You are always concerned any time a player like that goes down," Kiwanuka said Saturday. "That's not good. We know the type of player he is and if he can come back he will. But we have the personal to step up in his absence."
Kiwanuka sidestepped moving back to defensive end, saying that decision is up to the team.

Put Kiwi's hand on the ground and move someone to his linebacker spot as the depth at linebacker is better than it is at DE. I could name 3 players that are irreplaceable. Eli, Osi and AP. what a phenomenal fucking birthday present. This blows, but its not the end of the world. Luckily, Accorsi had a major hard-on for DE's. Either Kiwi moves back to DE (which I think is the most likely scenario), or they try to lure Strahan back with a shitload of cash. (Someone before said hes under contract with FOX so he can't come back - all of those contracts have clauses so they can return to the field if they want - see Keyshawn Johnson for instance)
It sucks that we will have to move Kiwi back, he was starting to look really good at LB, plus, when Osi returns next year, what do you do with Kiwi? Move him back to LB? Can't keep fucking around with him like that, let him sit and learn at LB or DE, don't keep moving him back and forth.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade. Danny Ware is making himself an extremely valuable chip, and teams around the league are looking for the next Ryan Grant.
Stay tuned, should be an interesting 11 days.

Kiwi moves to DE with Tuck & Tollefson with Wynn as a "hey we need a body" guy. Should wind up replacing him with Wilkerson (Wilkinson?) but I would not be shocked to see Blackburn steal the spot instead. Report: Strahan open to returning (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3552159)
Looks like Osi's injury may not be as horrible a thing as we thought! Although when I saw pictures of Strahan on the sidelines, he looks like he lost a lot of weight
Reports: Strahan would consider returning, Giants open to idea
Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan would consider returning to the team in the wake of Osi Umenyiora's season-ending knee injury, the New York Daily News has reported, citing an unnamed source.
According to the paper, Strahan, 36, who retired in the offseason after helping lead the Giants to a Super Bowl championship, would come back with the Giants if offered an $8 million contract for this season, according to a source close to the seven-time Pro Bowler.
"If the Giants make a sincere overture, it's a good chance that Strahan would consider coming back," the source said, according to the Daily News. "There are other things he has to take into consideration: the money and his contract with Fox."
Strahan currently holds a position at Fox Sports as an NFL studio analyst.
"But if the Giants really want him, they have a shot," the source said. "It's not out of the question."
The Giants appear open to the idea.
Co-owner Steve Tisch told the New York Post the Giants have warmed to Strahan returning.
"Would I like Michael to be a New York Giant this season? Absolutely. Absolutely," Tisch told the Post. "Will he be? I have no idea. I don't even want to put a percentage on it but things changed very quickly [Saturday] night and if one of the potential solutions is to reach out to Michael, worst-case, it's certainly worth a phone call.''
Strahan was in Greece on vacation Sunday when he heard the extent of Umenyiora's injury, the Daily News reported.
Strahan wouldn't confirm the possibility of returning in an interview with the NFL Network.
"I haven't heard from anybody else, so to say if I would or wouldn't is premature," Strahan said. "So I'm enjoying my retired life right now."
Coach Tom Coughlin said the team is considering all its options.
Strahan retired in June, ending a 15-year career highlighted by the Giants' stunning Super Bowl victory over the unbeaten New England Patriots.
Coughlin recently talked with Strahan about his new career working on Fox's pregame NFL show on Sundays.
"The only thing I talked with Michael about was his new challenge, moving forward in his new assignment and he was very excited about that," Coughlin said, according to The Associated Press.
Agent Tony Agnone said the Giants have not contacted him to ask about Strahan.
"Obviously, he loves the Giants and obviously he is working for Fox," Agnone said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Right now he is relaxing and getting ready for his Fox gig."
Strahan missed all of training camp last season while mulling retirement. He reported to the team a little more than a week before the season opener and played well.
However, he trained while thinking about retirement last year and was in good shape.
The Giants open the season on Sept. 4 against the Washington Redskins.

Kiwi has been moved to DE, Coughlin said it today and all the beat reporters are confirming it.
Vacchiano: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/
Tom Coughlin has a plan to replace Osi Umenyiora, and for the moment it doesn’t include Michael Strahan.
The coach announced a few moments ago that Mathias Kiwanuka will move back to defensive end after one year as a strongside linebacker.
“I talked with him yesterday,” Coughlin said. “He was more than willing to do whatever he could do in the best interests of the team.”
Coughlin said Danny Clark will work in Kiwanuka’s spot at strongside linebacker. That means Gerris Wilkinson will play on the weakiside.
As for Strahan, Coughlin said, “There hasn’t been any discussion that I’ve been involved in” about bringing him back. However, he also said “We’re going to explore every option.”
Garafolo: http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/beat_writers_blog/
With Osi Umenyiora out for the season, Mathias Kiwanuka will move back to defensive end.
Tom Coughlin confirmed the team's decision to take Kiwanuka, drafted in 2006 as a defensive end, from linebacker and move him onto the defensive line. Kiwanuka spent his rookie season at DE, but then transitioned to outside linebacker during the past two training camps.
More to come.
MG
also from MG's blog, an update on the Strahan watch:
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he hasn't spoken with retired DE Michael Strahan since he was on the sidelines for the team's preseason game against the Browns and he hasn't been involved in any effort to lure him back to the team.
"There hasn't been any discussion that iIve been involved in there," Coughlin said after a morning walk-through. "We're going to explore every option that's available. The last time I talked with Michael he had accepted his new challenge and was very happy about that."
Coughlin didn't want to speculate further about Strahan's intentions and said there is no time table for a decision on that front. He added that even though Strahan missed training camp last year, "his mentality was different."

Minor news: Craig Dahl tore his ACL again (the OTHER one this time, sucks for the poor guy) and is out for the year.
Major News: The Giants have contacted Michael Strahan, and the 2 sides are talking abouta comeback.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/2008/08/25/2008-08-25_source_talks_underway_between_giants_and.html
The Giants have reached out to the recently retired Michael Strahan, and talks are currently underway to see if they can lure him back for a 16th NFL season, the Daily News has learned.
According to a source close to Strahan, the seven-time Pro Bowler received a call from a Giants official Monday to gauge his interest in coming back to replace the injured Osi Umenyiora. The Daily News reported earlier Monday that Strahan is willing to come back if the Giants make a "sincere effort" to woo him and make an offer of $8 million for the year.
It's not immediately clear who in the organization called Strahan - who is on vacation in Greece and is currently planning to remain there until the end of the week - but several friends of his said Monday that he would definitely be interested in talking. A couple of those friends said he might ask the Giants for as much as $12 million, though another thought $8 million would be enough to lure the future Hall of Famer out of his brief retirement.
The Giants offered Strahan a deal worth $6.5 million with incentives back in the spring before he announced his retirement on June 9. Now that Umenyiora is out for the season with a torn lateral meniscus cartilage in his left knee, the Giants might be willing to up their offer.
For the moment, according to a Strahan friend, the Giants at least made the first step, by calling him to let them know that he was wanted and that they were serious about bringing him back. The talks are in the early stages, the source said, and it's not clear when Strahan will talk with the Giants again.
Earlier Monday, Tom Coughlin made the announcement that he planned to fill the void left by Umenyiora by moving linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, the position he was drafted at back in 2006. Coughlin said he hadn't been involved in any internal discussions about Strahan, but he refused to close the door on Strahan's return.
"We're going to explore every option that's available," Coughlin said.
GM Jerry Reese indicated the same thing in a statement, which read in part "We'll continue to research all of our options."
Until they know for sure whether they can bring back the 37-year-old Strahan, it appears the Giants will continue to move forward with their plan to switch Kiwanuka back to end. Coughlin said he spoke to Kiwanuka Sunday and he was willing to make the move.
"Mathias accepted every job that we have offered and every task we have presented him with," Coughlin said. "I talked with him yesterday and he was more than ready to do whatever we wanted him to do that was in the best interests of the team."

Reese finally calls Strahan's agent
(http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/08/reese-reaches-out.html)
While someone in the Giants organization is busy trading text messages with Michael Strahan, GM Jerry Reese has reached out to Strahan’s agent.
According to the agent, Tony Agnone, he spoke with Reese earlier today about whether Strahan would be interested in returning to the Giants. Agnone said the discussion was very general and very preliminary and definitely didn’t involve any talks about money.
They ended with Reese telling Agnone to let the Giants know if and when Strahan decides he’s serious about a return.
“They reached out and they talked to us about the possibility of Strahan returning,” Agnone said. “It’s something he’s thinking about.”
Agnone said that Strahan wasn’t considering a return at all before his friend and former teammates, Osi Umenyiora, suffered a season-ending knee injury Saturday night. After seeing that, Agnone said, Strahan “feels the ship isn’t even out of the harbor and they’re already taking on the cannons. He feels like maybe he should jump back in there.”
Agnone insisted he had no idea what the 37-year-old Strahan would decide to do, or what would happen if he told the Giants officially that he’d like to return.
Strahan is in Greece and has no immediate plans to return to the United States before the end of the week at the earliest. He’s also scheduled to begin his work with Fox as a studio analyst soon, but one source close to the defensive end said getting out of that contract shouldn’t be a problem.

It turns out Super Bowl XLII was Michael Strahan's final game after all.
The recently retired perennial Pro Bowler told FOXSports.com exclusively that he has decided to remain retired and has turned down the Giants' offer to lure him back to action.
"This has been one of the toughest nights of my life," Strahan said from Greece. "But after long deliberation and throwing around a million scenarios in my head for the past day, I think it's just best if I stay retired.
"I have gone back and forth on this because as a player you'll always want to play, you'll never lose that urge to be out there. But I could only do this if I could commit 100 percent, physically, mentally, emotionally and I can't do that. I've tried to convince myself and my body to give it one more year, but in the end I just don't think I could turn it on like I need to again."
Strahan and the team held discussions and he says the money was enough to do the deal. But in the end, it became a matter of whether or not he wanted to put his body through the rigors of another NFL season.
"I really love my life now," he said. "It's great having nobody put a finger on me. You really put yourself through an awful lot in this league, more than people realize.
"I've got a great home at FOX now and I think it's where I belong. I wish I could've had different news for Giants fans but I've known for a while I'm done.

oh well, can't fault the guy for not wanting to come back. Strahan did more for this team over the past 15 years than most players ever do.
a lot of people said the Giants weren't going to repeat this year. and i'm not saying that i don't hope they make it back to the Super Bowl. even a Giants fan since the cradle like myself couldn't have predicted that they were gonna win the Super Bowl this time last year. but with Strahan gone and Osi out for the year, they'll be hard-pressed to put together such a dominating defensive line they'll need to make it back. i think every fan wants their favorite team to win it all every year and the Giants fan in me wants them to, but the realist in me knows just how hard a repeat is even with a healthy team, and there's a part of me that kinda thinks that the Giants winning the Super Bowl for a second straight year might make what they did last year look a little less magical, you know? no matter what happens this season or next season or the season after that, we'll always be able to talk about the 2007 season as the best time to be a Giants fan.
maybe i'm trying to be an optimist, or maybe i'm just talking crazy, but the season hasn't started yet, and February is very far away right now. guess we'll just have to wait and see what this season has in store. go Giants, motherfucker.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyg) shored up their defensive end position by signing former Philadelphia Eagles (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=phi) first-round pick Jerome McDougle (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4473).
A source told ESPN.com's John Clayton that McDougle receives a one-year, $1 million deal.
http://assets.espn.go.com/i/headshots/nfl/players/65/4473.jpg McDougle
The Super Bowl champions lost seven-time Pro Bowler Michael Strahan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=495) to retirement in June and then had two-time Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4514) sidelined with a season-ending knee injury a little more than a week ago in a game against the Jets.
New York moved Mathias Kiwanuka (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9618) from linebacker back to defensive end days after Umenyiora was hurt.
A first round pick in 2003, McDougle was cut by Philadelphia on Saturday. He played in 33 games in five seasons and had three sacks. He missed all of last season with a triceps injury and was out for all of 2005 after being shot in the abdomen during a robbery during the offseason.
"It is great -- defending Super Bowl champs -- I look good in blue," McDougle said. "I feel good to be here, staying in the division, so not really much of a difference as far as guys you are going against, and I just feel good to be here, to be wanted, and I am just looking forward to doing some good things on this defense."
Coming to the Giants, McDougle will played under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who was a linebacker and defensive backs coach with the Eagles until being hired by New York.
"Coach Spags has done a good job here," McDougle said. "He really gets after it and kind of put his own niche on kind of the defense that we were running there in Philly. It is good for me because there is a lot of movement, which allows for guys like me a chance to kind of move and get after the quarterback a little bit."
To make room for McDougle on the 53-man roster, the Giants waived defensive tackle Rodney Leisle (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5664).

Yeah he was on his back. In full speed motion, I didn't hear the whistle until after the 2nd guy went in there...If the ball had come out he'd have been down by contact anyway.

Way to defend the title fellas.
Offense looked inconsistent, Eli's timing looked off with everyone except Plax. Love the re-signing of the big man too.
Defense looked fucking great, even the drive Washington scored on, they only had to go 35 yards after the return (coverage team needs work) and the bullshit flag.
Next time we play them, someone had better take a cheap shot at Chris Samuels' knees for cutting Kiwi on the last play.

I didn't know that they'd signed Plax to the extension...just like they said, it got done before the season started. Offense looked pretty good in the start, still need some work with the red zone offense. D was good, could have done with some more pressure on Campbell; pass coverage was pretty decent too. Special teams.....the old men can still kick, but Christ, can someone make a tackle?
oh if they didn't show it at halftime, Steve Tisch came out to apparently talk about a cancer benefit...I couldn't hear him because he was busy getting booed louder than John Cena in Philadelphia. It was ridiculous how loud it was...brutal booing for the PSL's :haha7: :haha7: :haha7:

Jacobs is a beast, hopefully he can keep that up, lots of pounding to his body though.
Hope Kiwanuka is ok, cant afford to lose him also.
Liked what I saw from the defense last night, love the blitz.
I actually liked what I saw from Manning last night, much more confidence I thought. I also thought his passes were tighter but he does need to change it up a bit. They will start double teaming plax if he doesnt find another big target. May need to get Boss more involved.
Overall they need to finish better. The touchdown drive was great but they stalled way to much in the red zone after that.

no clue...Jacobs broke a few runs on Thursday that Bradshaw would have taken to the end zone. Not like I'm complaining, Jacobs still got me 16+ points. Maybe it was an unofficial punishment for that whole "jail time" thing. I only saw him return the opening kickoff and that's about it.
oh, and Plax's contract is very heavily incentive laden (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/09/plaxs-deal-loaded-with-incenti.html); including games played, mini-camp & training camp participation.

What was with the lack of Bradshaw last night?
I think that it was an unofficial benching for spending a month in jail.
I just think that Coughlin/Gilbride are too smart to continue to pound Jacobs like he did on Thursday. Even though Ward seemed to come in for a whole drive at one point so he did get some rest, I think that the fact that Jacobs missed the first couple of games last year because of the injury in the Cowboy game, kept him fresh for the playoffs.
This is the first time I've actually felt good about a Committee of RBs. If they all stay relatively uninjured, it should be a good year for the Giants' running game.

part of an ESPN NFC East Blog by Matt Mosely
Former Miami Hurricane Kenny Phillips is having a similar impact for the Giants, who made him the final pick in the first round. In the months that have followed, I've started to hear other teams' scouts talk about how they coveted Phillips. He hasn't cracked the starting lineup yet, but he takes the field in the dime package. GM Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin know that he'll be starting for the next six or seven years, so there's no rush.
Phillips, though, was the buzz of training camp. He has the rare ability to make plays in coverage and then be physical near the line of scrimmage. In the tradition of other safeties from the U, he loves to punish opposing players.
"You don't like playing against guys like that," Plaxico Burress recently told the New York Times. "They can be in the middle of the field, the quarterback can look him off, throw to the other side of the field, and he's right there to put his helmet under your chin or pick the football off. There's only a few guys in the league that can do things like that."
When I sat down with Reese during training camp for an hour, the conversation kept turning back to Phillips. He sorts of glides around the field, but when the ball is thrown, he has what scouts refer to as "sudden speed." And the fact that he has excellent ball skills gives him the potential to be a six- or seven-interceptions-a-season guy.
btw, why don't I ever get to sit next to fans like this? "whaa"

I dont like the play calling. it got the job done but bombin it like that is bound to get picked. on the other hand, Giant's receivers seem to be 2 feet taller than Cinci's backs. great ctach by toomer
yeah, I'm with you there...was NOT a fan of it, especially when they were at the Bengals 38. I was fine with them staying in the shotgun, but run a fucking draw play!
Ugly ugly ugly, but a win nonetheless. Into the bye, 3-0...needed to win all of these games; hopefully they can come out of the bye with some more motivation

Boss catches a TD that Shockey surely would have dropped, and Shockey whiffs on a block that leads to a Reggie Bush fumble returned for a TD. I love it!

Eli...the Comeback Kid (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/09/eli-is-the-comeback-kid.html)
If you were surprised by what Eli Manning did yesterday, or even by what he did in Super Bowl XLII, you shouldn’t have been. Throughout his entire short career, he has absolutely been The Comeback Kid.
In his 64 career starts, including the playoffs, Manning has rallied the Giants out of a fourth-quarter hole to either take the lead or tie the game an amazing 16 times. Eleven times, including yesterday’s 26-23 overtime win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the comeback has resulted in a win.
And if that doesn’t impress you, consider this: The Giants have trailed in the fourth quarter in 38 of Manning’s 64 starts - more than half. Yet he’s rallied them to win 28.9% of those times. So if the Giants trail in the final 15 minutes, Manning has basically given them a one-in-three shot to win.
Here is the breakdown, comeback by comeback. Notice, too, that 7 of the 11 have come since the beginning of last year:
2004 SEASON
Jan. 2 (2005) - Giants 28, Dallas 24. Giants trail 24-21 with 11 seconds remaining when Manning, then a rookie, famously audibles out of a doomed pass play into a Tiki Barber run. Barber goes three yards up the middle for a touchdown and Manning’s first win.
2005 SEASON
Oct. 16 - Cowboys 16, Giants 13. Manning leads the Giants down the field for a game-tying touchdown with 19 seconds left in regulation (one drive after Brandon Jacobs fumbled at the Dallas 1). Cowboys go on to win in OT on a 45-yard field goal by Jose Cortez
Oct. 23 - Giants 24, Broncos 23. Maybe his most famous regular-season comeback. Down 13 with 13 minutes left, Manning rallies the Giants and eventually hits Amani Toomer with a game-winning touchdown with 5 seconds to go.
Nov. 13 – Vikings 24, Giants 21. Manning overcomes ugly, four-interception day by leading a touchdown drive (and two-point conversion) to tie the game with 1:21 remaining. But defense falls apart and Vikings deservedly win on a 48-yard field goal with 10 seconds left.
Nov. 27 – Seattle 24, Giants 21. This should’ve been a win. Down 21-13 with 4:33 remaining, Manning leads Giants to a tie on a touchdown pass (and two-point conversion) with 1:59 left). He also sets up three ensuing Jay Feely field goal tries (40 at the end of regulation, and 54 and 45 in OT) but Feely misses them all.
2006 SEASON
Sept. 17 – Giants 30, Eagles 24. Trailng 24-7 entering the fourth quarter, Manning engineers his biggest rally in his best game (31 for 45, 371 yards, three TDs), tying the game with a field goal drive in the final seconds. He won it on a a 31-yard pass to Plaxico Burress late in OT with two Eagles defenders about to hit him on a blitz.
Nov. 5 – Giants 14, Texans 10. Not very dramatic, but the Giants did trail 10-7 entering the fourth quarter. The game-winner was a TD pass to Jeremy Shockey with 7:49 to go.
Dec. 3 – Cowboys 23, Giants 20. The Giants are down by a touchdown in the final minutes, but Manning rallies and hits Burress with a 5-yard TD pass with 1:06 remaining. Unfortunately, Cowboys K Martin Gramatica wins it with one second to spare.
Jan. 7 (2007) – Eagles 23, Giants 20. Trailing 20-13, the Giants overcame a 2nd-and-30 and Manning ended up tying the game with an 11-yard TD pass to Burress with 5:04 left. Of course, the defense couldn’t hold and K David Akers eliminated the Giants from the playoffs as time expired.
2007 SEASON
Sept. 23 – Giants 24, Redskins 17. The Giants trail 17-10 as the fourth quarter begins, but score twice in the final 12:33, including a 33-yard TD to Burress with 5:32 remaining. Of course, the defense saves everyone with a last-second goal-line stand.
Oct. 7 – Giants 35, Jets 24. Giants trail by a field goal entering the fourth, but take the lead on a 47-yard catch-and-run by Burress. They put the Jets away for good on Aaron Ross’ interception return for a touchdown with 3:15 to play.
Dec. 2 – Giants 21, Bears 16. With their season slipping away, the Giants trail 16-7 before scoring twice in the final 6:54. The game-winning 2-yard run by Reuben Droughns (set up by a brilliant pass to Burress) comes with 1:33 remaining.
Dec. 23 – Giants 38, Bills 21. Technically this goes in Manning’s column, though he had little to do with it on a day he fumbled five times. The Giants did trail 21-17 in the fourth, though, before two interception returns for touchdowns and an 88-yard TD run by Ahmad Bradshaw made it a blowout.
Jan. 13 (2008) – Giants 21, Cowboys 17. It was a fourth-quarter comeback, but only barely. The Giants trailed 17-14 before a Brandon Jacobs’ on-yard touchdown run, 2:24 into the fourth quarter put them up for good. Manning’s best moment was a touchdown drive in the final seconds of the first half. And don’t forget R.W. McQuarters’ game-ending INT to seal the deal.
Feb. 3 (2008) – Giants 17, Patriots 14. Down 14-10 with 2:39 to go against the undefeated New England Patriots, Manning calmly jogged out onto the … oh, you know the rest.
2008 SEASON
Sept. 21 – Giants 26, Bengals 23. Down 20-16 with 4:39 left, Manning leads them to a go-ahead TD to Kevin Boss with 1:50 left. The Bengals rally to kick a FG at the end of regulation, but Manning connects on a couple of big passes to set up the game-winning field goal in OT.

That article with Eli's comebacks reminded me of the Seattle game when Feely kept missing field goals. Probably as brutal a regular season loss as the Giants have had during the Eli Era. And the eerie similarities with the Tynes, Packer Championship game last year made that 47 yarder in O.t. when it sailed through that much sweeter.

What a fucking maroon. Plaxico Burress suspended 2 weeks by the team (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3606150) for an unexcused absence. He wasn't at practice on Monday and didn't answer his phone or answer messages to say why he wasn't there.
He'll miss the game against the Seahawks & obviously any/all practices this week as well. Bet you feel silly getting that contract extension, and now because you're being an asshole, you get an immediate 12.5% cut in your base salary.

Rosenhaus and Plax are filing a grievance with the NFLPA. They both agree that he broke the rules and needs to be disciplined, but feels that a 2 week suspension is too harsh. Plax doesn't want to let his teammates down by missing a game.
The good news is that he agrees that he needs to be punished, so I have faith that this won't escalate into something awful.
Other news - Dick Lynch died. RIP Dick.

Sad to hear about Dick Lynch :(
hopefully the NFLPA works it quickly and there's not much of an issue with the team. If he can wind up getting it reduced to one week, that would be the best. Unfortunately, any practice time missed between Plax & Eli will throw them even more off chart...you can see that they're not perfectly meshing right now, they need time to work together

Rosenhaus said Burress spoke with Giants director of player development Charles Way on Monday evening, but he added there was "miscommunication" between the player and the team.
When the hell did that happen? Wasn't he the fullbacks coach?
In other former Giants news, a very sad story:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3607238
TAMPA, Fla. -- The 3-month-old son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant died Wednesday morning, coach Jon Gruden said.
Matthew Tryson Bryant apparently died in his sleep, Gruden said. The coach did not have further details. Matthew was born June 16.
"We're shocked and very saddened by this," Gruden said. "It's just a horrible tragedy, and I can't explain it."
Gruden said he was not sure if Bryant will play in Sunday's game against Green Bay. The player's situation would be addressed later in the week, the coach said.
"The entire Buccaneer family is deeply saddened by this tragedy," Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen said in a statement. "The Bryants have been an inspiration to our entire community through their commitment to their family and their exhaustive efforts working with children and those in need in the Bay area. Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and Melissa during this difficult time.''
Bryant, a seventh-year pro in his fourth season with Tampa Bay, kicked a winning field goal in overtime against Chicago last Sunday. Two years ago, he made the third-longest field goal in NFL history, a 62-yarder to beat Philadelphia.

In an effort to fire Hawks' fans up for October 5th Giants/Seahawks game, one Huddle poster named "Mason" decided the best way to do that was with some good ol' 9/11 trash talk. Ugh.
Giants fans and non-Giants fans unamused by the weak attempt at Seahawks solidarity are rightfully appalled. The original poster, obviously aware that this wasn't the intelligent or human way to stoke this non-rivalry, is scrambling to pull the thread. Unfortunately for Mason, too many people offended by the post already emailed in with the visual evidence and the text. (I'm told he's now writing under a dupe account named "Anguish".)

Giants RB Danny Ware arrested for public drunkeness (http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/092908/new_338108999.shtml)
Running back arrested while standing in traffic, police say
Athens-Clarke police were more concerned with 23-year-old Danny Ware’s drunken conduct early Sunday than they were impressed with his Super Bowl ring.
Officers arrested the world champion New York Giants running back on an alcohol charge as he joined other Georgia Bulldog fans who wallowed in the aftermath of Saturday night’s defeat to the Crimson Tide of Alabama.
Ware, a Georgia football standout, was drafted last year by the NFL Tennessee Titans, claimed on waivers by the New York Jets, then signed by the Giants two months before their Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots in February.
Ware and a 24-year-old Dallas woman attracted a police officer’s attention at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday at East Clayton Street near North Jackson Street because they seemed oblivious to traffic that had to steer around them as they stood in the street talking, according to police.
Ware admitted that he’d been drinking, and a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.152 grams, police said.
The woman, Jennifer Henderson, refused to take a breath tests, police said.
Each was charged with pedestrian under the influence and pedestrian in the roadway.
Ware was released from Clarke County jail at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday after he posted a $500 cash bond.Looks like he made the best of his bye week....
as for Plax...looks like he may wind up getting the financial portion of his suspension reduced

Giants & Eli working on new contract?
from BBI:
Giants Working on New Deal for Manning?: The Bergen Record is reporting that there is a rumor circulating that the Giants and QB Eli Manning’s agent are working on a contract extension that could be finalized before the 2008 NFL season is over. The deal supposedly will pass the 7-year, $99.2 million contract his brother signed with the Colts in 2004. Eli’s current contract is set to expire after the 2009 NFL season.

And here is a great read on Garafolo's blog about the offensive line:
http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2008/10/new_york_giants_offensive_line.html
Shaun O'Hara ducked behind the wall outside the Giants' locker room, trying to make his 303 pounds small enough to hide in a little cubby hole long enough to scare his fellow offensive linemen.
"Rrrraaaaahhhh!" O'Hara growled when Rich Seubert, Chris Snee and Kareem McKenzie came around the corner on their way to practice.
"Rrrraaaaahhhh!" Snee and Seubert yelled back, neither of them having flinched. McKenzie, a few days removed from suffering a concussion, never broke stride and kept looking straight ahead.
David Diehl, who emerged from the locker room moments after O'Hara's failed scare tactic, let out a "Rrrraaaaahhhh!" as he adjusted his gloves -- perhaps just to feel like part of the group.
it continues from there.

Plax temporarily hospitalized:
http://rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=128188&id=19
Plaxico Burress had to be hospitalized temporarily Thursday due to soreness in his neck.
Tests revealed no structural damage, but Burress' neck hasn't made much improvement since last weekend and his status for Week 8 is up in the air. "They say there’s nothing bone, no vertebrae, nothing like that," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He’s very sore, still stiff." Plax hasn't practiced yet this week and there's a real chance he'll have to sit out against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ league-best pass rush had no sacks and, according to the final stat sheet, no quarterback hits. In other words, they didn’t touch Eli Manning once. Not once. So game balls and raises to the entire offensive line. And Manning should buy them all a nice dinner, too.

Great news (at least I think so): The Giants will not be wearing their awful red jerseys Sunday afternoon. In fact they're not going to be wearing them at all this year.
We can only hope that this is a permanent decision, though I have no reason to believe it is. Of course, if it is and you've already purchased a red jersey, let this serve as a lesson to you. Buy into these silly marketing gimmicks at your own risk.:clap9::clap9::yclap::yclap:
fucking hate those jinxed jerseys
And Osi says that he could have been ready to play (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/10/osi-i-could-have-been-ready-to.html)
The Giants have the NFL’s best pass rush with 26 sacks in the first seven games. Now try to imagine how much better it would be with a healthy Osi Umenyiora.
It can’t happen. But it could’ve happened, because Umenyiora said today that his rehab from knee surgery is “about a month ahead of schedule,” and he could’ve been on track to return to the field later this year.
And if you think that’s painful for you to hear, imagine how much it hurts him.
“It hurts. I’m not going to say it doesn’t hurt. It definitely hurts,” Umenyiora said. “Especially seeing the way things are going with the team and how they’re playing. It just looks like they’re having a good time. I wish I could do it.”
Of course, Umenyiora - who was at the ESPN Zone in Manhattan today with several of his teammates to play in a cross-country Xbox Live showdown to promote a new game, Far Cry 2 - knows that the Giants had little choice but to put him on season-ending injured reserve after his left knee locked up during the Giants’ preseason game against the Jets on Aug. 23. Once he opted for surgery to fix a problem that had lingered for about a year, there was only a slim chance that he would be ready in time for the playoffs.
It just so happens that he beat the odds. Umenyiora, the Giants’ lone Pro Bowler from last season, already started doing some jogging and some light cutting - two things he wasn’t supposed to do until late November. With no games to get back for, though, he won’t be doing any football-specific drills until the spring.
While it’s painful for Umenyiora to sit this year out, especially with the defending champs off to a 6-1 start, the sixth-year pro doesn’t have any regrets about opting for surgery, especially since his knee has been hurting since Opening Day last year. That’s when he believes he tore the meniscus in his left knee initially, and he played through the pain all year.
“That’s what I think. I think it actually tore then,” Umenyiora said. “You guys didn’t know about that (the Giants officially called it an “irritation” to his meniscus). But I was doing some things to keep the swelling down. Ronnie Barnes and the medical staff were doing a great job of taking care of me. But I played on that all last year.
“Then, when I fell this year, the part that was floating around got caught in the joint. That’s why I couldn’t straighten the knee out. They had to go in and take it out.”
Now, when Umenyiora returns next spring he believes his knee will be “stronger than ever.” And in the meantime, the injury has given him a chance to plan for his post-NFL career. He’s done some work with ESPN (Monday Night Countdown), was the color commentator on the United Kingdom broadcast of the Giants-Browns game two weeks ago, and tomorrow he’s taping a segment for Showtime’s Inside the NFL.
“This injury has afforded me so many other opportunities,” he said. “I’m starting to work on my second career. I couldn’t do that playing football. This was my sixth year. It’s not like I have 10 more years to play. I only have a short period left. It flew by. So that’s the silver lining.”
Of course, he also does rehab work on his knee for two hours a day, and then does his regular workout for another 90 minutes. So it’s not like he’s spending all his down time in a TV studio or booth.
One place you won’t find him, though, is hanging around the Giants’ locker room. “If I was around it,” he said, “I would go into depression.” He prefers to keep his distance, to keep his mind off football as much as possible.
But he promises he will be there, if necessary, for Super Bowl XLIII down in Tampa.
“When they make it,” he said, “I’ll be there.”

I have a red AP jersey but I only bought it because I was going to that Giants/Dallas game a couple years back and sitting in the end zone and they wanted the fans to wear red. I do my part. Glad they not wearing them this year though, I dont like Big Blue in red. I want to see a throwback to the Simms/LT/Hampton Giants uni's.

I would love it if the Giants alternate unis were the ones from 1986/1990. Of course I also say that the Jets throwback unis shouldn't be the Titans one, it should be their Al Toon Jets unis.
I don't like the red jerseys myself, especially since I think we're winless in them. Fucking hate wearing them against the Cowboys. To me, they're like Notre Dame's green jerseys

We won the game I was with the red jerseys. But I'm pretty sure that was it.
And the Jets using those old Titans jerseys is so gay. Those green jerseys were ok. I didnt like how they were almost the same green as the Eagles though.

I wish the Giants did wear a throwback jersey but guess they kinda are because the NY is the old one. Can't wait till tomorrow. really pumped for the game. " LET'S GO GIANTS"

anyone else watching the Titans/Packers game and rooting against the Titans? if the Giants win and the Titans lose, you think the Giants will be #1 again, considering they're in the tougher conference?

I wanted Jacobs but he didn't make it back to me as I spent my first two picks on wideouts to completely abort my annual strategy which got me nowhere the past number of years.
As much as I like Jacobs I still see my boy Rodney Hampton as the real #27. I remember when they drafted him, I was so hoping that Emmitt would fall to them but Hampton was a good consolation prize. Too bad he broke the leg in the playoffs that year, would have been to see him in that Super Bowl.

And he just made that look fucking easy. So fucking happy they are completely kicking these fuckers while they are down. Complete demoralization. Romo should just stay home and fucking Jessica instead of even bothering.

now here's the question...do I have him sign a jersey (Tuck, Snee, Strahan, or an old cheap Taylor that doesn't have his name on it) or have him sign a card

I remember watching that game at my grandfather's and being fucking happy about the beating they laid on the Bears (especially after what they did to my all-time favorite player Jim McMahon) but sad that Hampton got injured. He still had a pretty solid Giants career but playing in that Super Bowl would have been awesome.
I met him back in the day when the Giants had a two or three year stretch of coming to my high school in North Bumfuck, New Jersey to play basketball. Met Hampton, Meggett, and other guys like Keith Hamilton. Was pretty fucking cool. Anyway, I'd just get an 8x10 on ebay. You'll overpay for shipping but it'll come out much better than a card. I've been trying to collect as many premium type pieces like that to eventually put in a separate room for whenever I get a real place to call my own.

I used to like Aikman but what a fucking dolt he is most of the time. They should demote him and put him on the fucking B team with that asshole Siragusa and let Moose escape from that horseshit.
