Just mildly curious. 2 names that come to mind at the moment are Tori Amos and Carly Simon (yes, there are plenty others) I guess I was just a tad bored

Ani DiFranco. I'm not gay, but her guitar work & songwriting is really neat.
There are a few others.. really depends on my mood.

Definitely Ani, she's one of my favorite artists period.
She's a great guitarist, great writer, she's great live, I love her political views, etc.
(I have a framed 5 froot by 3 foot poster of her, I'm not gay....)
I also like Patti Smith and Susan Tedeschi.

I agree with Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos but I personally just can't listen to them.
I always loved the voice of Delores O'Riordan from the Cranberries but I think most people find her voice annoying.
In metal Candace Kucsulain of Walls of Jericho and Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy and very good vocalists who can easily rival a lot of the men. Also Otep Shamaya from the band Otep has a pretty cool voice for the genre, but her lyrics range from beautifully disturbing to occasionally juvenile.

I think that she's hot. But that's beside the point. Her music is really great.
Some other singer songwriters that I enjoy:
Tori Amos
Nellie McKay
Kate Bush
Sheryl Crow
Liz Phair
In addition to loving the music, I also feel that these women are very hot. I would toe fuck them in a minute.
Alicia Keys
Natalie Merchant
Christina Aguilera (might be wrong, but I think her and Mariah Carey are the only 8 octave vocalists around in pop/rock music at the moment)
Tori Amos

I'm not a snob that knows everything she's done, but Lucinda Williams seems particularly good. And she has a very real edge that you rarely see on females in public life. (a drunk, former? smackhead)....she once puked near my shoes.

I can't STAND Sheryl Crow.
I totally forgot about Joni Mitchell, she's my #2.
Another unique guitar player, and good songwriter.

Lucinda's great, I almost forgot about her. I'm also going to suggest Poe. Her album 'Haunted' deserves alot more credit than it gets.

Dido, amazing voice. The bald chick (aka Sinead O'connor) a wee bit wacky, but also, another great voice.
And of course that wack job, Amy Winehouse. Dusty Springfield, another great talent.
And not to forget, Fiona Apple, who I would have like to slam my cock in her poohah repeatedly, back in the day.

Although I DO NOT like Jagged Little Pill...a lot of Alanis Morrisette's work after that (especially some deep tracks) are really really good.
(Singer, Sognwritter and Multi-Instraments)
Natalie Merchant is another but her politics suck.
(Singer, Sognwritter)
Sarah McLaughlin can be sappy sweet but also has a few deep tracks that are good.

I still love Imogen Heap.
Tori Amos has always been right there as number two. I'll also give honorable mention to Tracey Thorn, I love so much of her work, especially her collaborations with Massive Attack.
