Even after the dust has settled between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, the prices for Blu-ray players and movies in particular, haven’t gone down. Most decent Blu-ray players cost upwards of $500 and higher. Thankfully, Samsung may be coming to the rescue with its BD-P1500 Blu-ray player.

The BP-P1500, which usually sells for $400, is reported to go on sale on Black Friday at a nice price point of $149.

According to Gizmodo, news of the sale hit consumer electronics retailer Ultimate Electronics.

Up until now, most consumers who opted to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon went and bought Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. With the PS3, not only could you play games and surf the Internet, you were able to rest at ease knowing that the PS3 was actually one of the best — if not the best — Blu-ray player on the market.

Now that console prices are dropping and more movies hitting the Blu-ray format, like Iron Man, expect to see better embrace of the sole high-def format.

In related news, rumors about Microsoft introducing a Blu-ray addon to its Xbox 360 console hit the wires last week. Earlier this year, Microsoft stated that it wouldn’t be introducing Blu-ray for the Xbox 360. Due to popular demand however, Microsoft may be changing its game plan to meet customer expectations. Microsoft may also be considering offering high-def streaming of full length movies through its online services as well.

High-def streaming isn’t a new concept either. Apple has done well with its iTunes service, which allows customers to rent high-def content and stream it to their computers or their Apple TV boxes. Apple’s push into using streaming is no surprise, as none of its Macs have Blu-ray drives in them.

ah yes, Black Friday sales...good luck getting one as the store (never heard of them btw) will only have about 5 on the floor to draw the masses in.

The "due to popular demand" line made me laugh, is the author trying to throw that in the article as fact? :icon_lol:

The prices are still not low enough. Until they drop below $100, people will be perfectly happy with a $50 Walmart special DVD player. Even the cheap ones have decent upscaling and that is good enough for the average consumer.

the Blu-Ray discs themselves are significantly more money than SD DVDs and HD DVDs.

The cost of the discs is why is expected HD DVD to win the format war.

HD DVDs are cheap because they're abandoned and dead. Before they were about the same cost.

It'll be in affordable range around Christmas. Next Christmas the going price will be sub 100$.

HD DVDs were cheaper to manufacture than Blu Ray discs.

That never materialized into real world lower prices. The average cost difference wasn't much. The equipment was sold at such a loss Toshiba kept the disc royalties high. Blu-ray didn't take a loss on the equipment but they kept the cost low on the disc side.

In the end, this doesn't matter as Blu-ray won for the reasons I stated long ago.

Nope it didn't, probably one of the reasons why the format failed, that and Toshiba didn't have the kind of money Sony had to put behind it.

I would have preferred a 3rd format that had the features of HD DVD with the storage of Blu Ray.

But on demand - download - Apple TV type of format will be the long term winner.

Sony is going to end up screwing its own self. They have not won shit. They should be cranking players out and eating the loss, like Microsoft does with the Xbox360. The longer they take to secure this market, the more likely people will find other HD alternatives.

or to just wait it out for the next generation of user HD movie viewing...Which is media less...Just digital files stored on a HD or streamed on demand...
