So Microsoft is doing pretty good in Japan. Not great, but good. Good enough to beat the PS3 last month. This is the Xbox 360 display at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. The banner in the front is an advertisement for an entertainment festival in Akihabara — it's a red herring, disregard. Back in August, the Xbox 360 sold out in this very store. If you've been to Akihabara, you know that this is a very large retailer. Lots of shoppers! So for Microsoft to sell out right here is a good sign, and it's great for the Xbox 360's reputation in Japan. This demo set-up is not. Well, no, the set-up is fine, it's the upkeep. But just as Microsoft starts to gain ground in Japan, an old friend rears its ugly head...

Hrm. Let's get a closer look. Over there, right about that price cut poster.

Hello, you. Out of all the demo kiosk consoles Microsoft needs working in Japan... Doubt this will catastrophically affect Xbox 360 sales in Japan. Microsoft will most likely sell lots of consoles this holiday season. (So will will Nintendo and Sony. Everyone wins!)

Says youre lucky.
In all fairness this is another non story. The display models are running all day in a case that has no air flow. Its no suprise that it died. Most electronic equipment will die under those conditions.

A group of 6 of us were playing Halo 3 Saturday night, which has become a semi-regular ritual. 2 of the 5 360s involved in our group (2 of the guys were playing split screen) red ringed during the session.
Both of the guys who's boxes failed have both had red rings already. One was playing on his refurb he got back from the first failure, the other was playing on a fresh machine (he had modded his original failure, so couldnt send it back. The new one was unmodded at the time of failure.)

I'd say that's great marketing for the Shitbox PleaseFixMe...it shows the consumer exactly what they're going to get.

Why do some people ,when they send their 360s that have RROD, buy a new 360 until it comes back or something?

That's just it, fanboys are not fair. The fact that these display models DO run non stop in a glass case means nothing. "HAHA SHIT BOX! M$ M$ M$!!!!11!"
My cousin has had one for nearly 2 years, no problems. The first guy in our group of friends to get a 360 bought it at launch, it was still working perfectly when he sold it a few months back when he upgraded to the Elite.
Out of the 7 people I know personally who has a 360, one guy had to send his in, got another one and it's been running fine for over a year. I had to send mine in, had the replacement for a while now, no problems. No one else has had any rrod's.
You only hear about it when they fuck up, you don't usually hear about the ones that last.
But I guess these are just RARE exceptions or something, right?

If he bought it last xmas it should still be under warranty. Get his serial number and stuff, go to the xbox site and put the info in. It will tell you if you're still under warranty or not.
If so, request a repair, they'll ship you out a prepaid box in a couple days and once you send it back, you should have another xbox within a week or 2.
If this is an Xbox bashing thread, let me just give a big fuck-you to Microsoft for delaying Xbox Prime Time. This also delays the Netflix content on XBL.

I remember when the Gamestop clerk was trying to talk me out of a PS3. He said he heard the Best Buy display model locked up and broke. This was before the RROD became well known. Looks like ignoring his attempt to sell me a 360 worked out well.

I'm a big a Sony fan as anyone, I probably border on fanboyism my fair share of times, but I am realistic and honest. This is a non story, and more propaganda formed by game sites to drive traffic and get people posting and arguing on their site.
I know more people who have PS3s than I do 360s. Out of all the people who own PS3 not one person has had a problem. At least 1/2 of the 360 owners have had theirs RRod. Thats not news, either.

Yea realistically, KneeKnee has a good point. Not a fan of xbox, but its the truth. You can't run anything for 24 hours or more, in such a small cramped space, and expect it to run as if it were sitting in a well ventilated living room.
Its usually the 1 gen ones that Red Ring the most. My sister's Bee Eff got a 360 THE day it was released, and of course it was a RRoD whore. Those are usually the gerbil units, pushing the product out to the consumer to see what if anything will be fucked up. Its better to wait a year or so, THEN get one.

Yup.
Early adopter? Impatient? Oh well, dont cry when your machine shits the bed. I always give a new game console a year to succeed or fail before I invest. This also works out for me when I let the idiots who wait in line in a tent pre-release field test the new unit for me for about a year, and discover what wonderful bugs need to be shaken out.
