youtube has me discovering music I haven't listened to in years. This is one style I happen to really enjoy and haven't seen mentioned on here as of yet, ska. Ska is basically Western Jamacian dancehall style music from the early 50's that some British bands picked up on in the late 70's into the 80's if you're not familiar with it.

Ska is older than the 70's british bands. Ska was big in the 60s. The 70s british bands are the 2nd wave.

Love 1st wave and also ska fused music.

Ska was fast music, oldies mixed with Caribbean music.

Baba Brooks - Girls Town 1965:

The fast dancing grew out of style after less than half a decade. Jamaica was too hot for it. Here's Justin Hinds with a variation of ska called Rocksteady. The song is Rub Up Push Up:

Here's ska getting even slower. You can tell it's turning into Raggae by this point.

Jackie Mittoo mixed Ska with Jazz (ignore gay video):

Ska kind of died in the early 70s and was pretty much ignored in Jamaica until a British "shock jock" named Judge Dread started making comedy songs using Ska and doing a Jamaican impersonation. Judge Dread became HUGE, in both the UK and Jamaica. That started the 2nd wave of ska, where it was more popular in the UK than in Jamaica.

Here's Judge Dread:

3rd wave was when it became really international in the 80s.

I'm a big fan of the 70's and 80's "Two Tone" ska. Back in the 90's I really got into the new ska movement. I recently kind of got back into it when I met my girlfriend that's never stopped listening to it. I don't care what anyone says, Less Than Jake and all those poppy upbeat bands are just plain fun to listen to.

Here's Jimmy Cliff live in 1962. Weird seeing Jamaicans not pretending to hump 12 year old boys.

Everyone remembers this rocksteady classic, Desmond Dekker with the Israelites:

Ska sucks. Ska revival isn’t cool, you stupid fuck. The bands are only in it for the bucks. And if you don’t believe me you’re a schmuck. But the trend will die out with any luck. Rudy, a message to you Rudy… Fuck you Rudy!

Operation Ivy.
Rancid has a few good ska/punk songs.
Tim Armstrong also put out a solo album that's pure ska/reggae (some people may be put off by his mushmouthed/stroke victim/retard delivery, but I like him).
Also the first Suicide Machines album has a few good ska tunes, as well as punk.

Sorry to be a stickler, but that honor actually goes to bands such as The Toasters, Operation Ivy, Fishbone, and Bim Skala Bim.

Bosstones definitely brought ska-core to the forefront though.

I didn't even know that Ska was still around. I wouldn't know since I'm not thirteen anymore. I don't Sk8.
