Sucks. Seems like such a nice guy. Was surprised this wasn't on the music portion of this site today so I'm glad I posted it. I randomly saw it on theprp.com
It happened sometime yesterday.

Update:
The Deftones camp have put out some more updates on band bassist Chi Cheng's current condition. Band drummer Abe Cunningham checked in with the following:
"Hi,
I spoke to Chi's mother this morning, the Neurosurgeon treating Chi says the first 72 hours are critical, and as of now he is fighting the good fight and the doctors remain optimistic. We are seeing your prayers in action. The family asks that all the prayer warriors out there to continue to pray for Chi, and keep sending out your positive energy!
Today's good deed for Chi is to call someone you love, remind them of that love by saying "I love you," and like yesterday remind them to buckle up.
-Abe"
Meanwhile, Chi's mother has also checked in with an update which states that Chi is expected to endure a tough recovery and will more than likely be able to return to the stage. It can be found in its entirety here. Chi was involved in a car crash early last week which was said to have left him in coma.

Chi Update 11/18
Hello Friends,
My apologies for the delay in updates. Chi's condition remains the same - serious, but stable. He still lies in a coma, however his vitals (heart, lungs, and blood pressure) all exhibit very stable functions and doctors have begun removing much of the excess monitoring equipment. Chi remains strong in his fight to recover.
Winston Churchill once said, "Never give in - in nothing, great or small, large or petty, except to convictions of honour and good sense." Today, please be especially aware of your personal choices. Never give in to pressure and try not to be discouraged. Your good choices each day will bring good things back to you and create a better life for you and yours.
Moving forward, I will be creating a new blog dedicated to my daily updates. It will take me a few days to get this up and running, so please bear with me. Deftones will continue to update you on Chi's condition when there's a significant change in his condition.
Thank you again for keeping Chi in your prayers. It's keeping all of is strong.
Our love to you all,
Jeanne

Aw geez. So dead. Hate to say it but it's either that or in a coma for a long time. I don't see him coming out. I pray to god he does though.
Is it too early to speculate on the future of the band? I don't seem them as the type to replace a member. Hopefully they can release the newest album they've been working on. I think Chi would have wanted that.

A poem I wrote about this situation.
Bassist in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
Bassist in a coma, I know
I know - its really serious
There were times when I could
Have murdered him
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to him)
No, I dont want to see him
Do you really think
He'll pull through ?
Do you really think
He'll pull through ?
Do ...
Bassist in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
My, my, my, my, my, my bassist, goodbye
There were times when I could
Have strangled him
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to him)
Would you please
Let me see him!
Do you really think
He'll pull through ?
Do you really think
He'll pull through ?
Do ...
Let me whisper my last goodbyes
I know - its serious

I first saw Deftones way back right before "Adrenaline" came out when they opened for Korn at the Limelight. I was completely blown away and they became my absolute favorite band for the next 5 years or so. I have seen them live more than any other band (22 times) and although my tastes swung back toward the more extreme side of metal I had always remained a fan. Keep fighting Chi.

I first heard of them when Scott Ferrell was on here locally back in the 90's. Been listening to them ever since. That was one of the best things that ever came from that show.

Just read this...
DEFTONES To Be Joined By Former QUICKSAND Bassist For BAMBOOZLE LEFT Appearance
Sacramento's DEFTONES will be joined by bassist Sergio Vega (ex-QUICKSAND) for the band's April 5 appearance at the Bamboozle Left festival at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California.
DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng remains in a coma following a November car accident. He was gravely injured in a November 3 car crash in northern California and has not regained consciousness since.
Commented the band: "With the announcement of our appearance on Bamboozle, we felt like its time to address some things. First, Chi. Our fallen comrade has not made significant progress as of late, but continues to fight on from his accident. Doctors are working feverishly to return our brother to us, and we continue to hold out hope and faith that Chi returns to the life he has waiting for him and can join us on stage once again.
"For everyone that knows Chi, knows that he never wanted down time. Chi always wanted to keep working and never slow down, which is why we feel confident in returning to the stage at Bamboozle in April. Chi would want it, and we want to make sure we're keeping his legacy alive.
"Back in 1999, Chi had to leave the band for a brief moment and our close friend Sergio Vega filled in to keep the train moving. 10 years later, Sergio is going to step in once again while Chi is down. Sergio is family to us, and had received Chi's blessing before, so without a doubt we know that if Chi could tell us now, he would give us his blessing again.
"In the meantime, we continue work on our record, and as for Bamboozle, we felt like we needed to poke our heads up for a quick breath before we buckle down and get this record finished... So we'll see you all in Irvine."
Cheng is 38 years old and is a poet as well as a musician. He released a CD of his poetry called "The Bamboo Parachute" in 2000.
Cheng has been a member of DEFTONES since its formation in 1988. The band released its debut disc, "Adrenaline", in 1995 and scored a platinum record with 2000's "White Pony".

I'm happy to hear they are going to continue to play. I don't think Cheng will ever recover as bad as that is to say. It's very sad to hear that he has had no improvement.

From what I understand from reading that is that he called for his mom. I hope he comes out of it and makes a full recovery from his injuries.

As much as I hate PETA, Chi is a big supporter. So they are supporting him. Aparently his medical bills are outrageous, so there is a certain PETA tshirt that you can purchase and some of the proceeds will go to chi's medial expenses.
