GW Bush Speech in Oklahoma brings out the "Real Conservatives"
Quote:
Ex-President George W. Bush welcomed to Woodward, Oklahoma
Woodward, Okla. -- Former President George W. Bush was greeted by thunderous applause on the Fourth of July as he told thousands of spectators in a rural Oklahoma rodeo arena that the U.S. was "the greatest nation on the face of the earth."
Bush was given six standing ovations as he spoke in GOP-friendly Woodward, a town of about 12,000 residents in northwestern Oklahoma.
About 9,200 tickets were sold for the event -- the biggest crowd for Bush since he left office in January.
Bush spoke of the bravery of injured troops he had met as president, and thanked members of the military for their service. He told the crowd it was nice of them "to give a retired guy something to do."
The former president has turned up in a handful of out-of-the-way places since he left office, and he surprised city leaders in Woodward by accepting their invitation to speak at festivities celebrating the $25-million renovation of a local park.
Woodward is friendly territory for Bush, who visited the town two decades ago while campaigning for his father's presidential bid.
Oklahoma hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964, and was the only state in 2008 in which every county voted for the GOP candidate, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
In 2004, Bush won 80.9% of the vote in Woodward County as he defeated Democratic challenger John F. Kerry.
Bush's principles ring true in Oklahoma, said Kris Day, who owns the Cowboy's Tack Shop with her husband, Neal.
"We're conservative," she said. "We don't spend money we don't have."
It was reportedly the first presidential visit to Woodward since the 1950s, when Dwight D. Eisenhower landed at the airport outside town en route to view local drought damage.

It's a good thing to see Conservatives are smart and know what their government is doing.

Ok... some people still like Bush. Hell, Obama has done far worse than Bush and you still adore the guy.

What exactly does Bush have to do with that the government is doing NOW?
I forgot, Obama isn't spending anything and we now have a surplus. My bad.
And.... The LA Times really is a great, unbiased source. I'm glad you used it. It's not like they ever sat on a story about a former Presidential candidate and his mistress/babymama/lovechild situation.

Oklahoma is the only state in which McCain won every county. As for urban areas, I think Tulsa, OKC and Phoenix were the biggest urban areas he won.
Remember this....

I'm not sure if there are any countries that are better than the US, but the pre 9-11 US was a better country than it is today.

Or the same. These are the same people who made "Dancing with the Stars" a hit. Don't act like they're finally enlightened.
And I have a hard time using the word "democratic" for anything the modern democrat party stands for.

Except that Oklahoma is a federal welfare state. I pray to Mary, Joseph, and baby jesus every night that a dollar for dollar federal spending cap kicks you right in your hypocritical chicken-fried-steak eating cunt.

Get a new gimmick, please. We get it. New York is better than every other state. You don't need to continually hammer that tired point home.

Apparently it was supposed to belittle people who may have supported Bush, even if he didn't always do the "conservative" thing.

Yes Don I know... for you any fact or data that runs contrary to your GoP thought programming becomes a gimmick, lie, or treason.

Technologically, it is a much better place: there are better phones, Internet, etc. plenty of cures were invented, medical procedures and care improved. The way the vast majority of Americans were able to communicate and trade 10-15 years ago can barely be compared to the way they can now.
Socially, things have improved a little when it comes to the level of acceptance of minorities, maybe even immigrants etc.
However, for those of us who like to still be in charge of our lives, all this progress is trumped by the massive deterioration of our political system. For the past two decades, government on every level has been working to erode every single liberty individuals have in this country, both their property rights through taxation and environmental/community activism, financial regulation, etc. as well as personal rights such as free speech (FCC rules have been tightened, N word has been banned and buried in several places, etc.), the right to bear arms, or be free from government search and seizure, etc.
If the US is still the best country in the World, that's just because Europe has been moving toward fascism at an even greater pace.

I think Menino is mocking Bush for his government spending line.
Which would be a more appropriate slam, if Obama hadn't signed in legislation that increases government spending FAR beyond anything Bush or Republicans did, and in general Democrats weren't / aren't happy that he's not spending more.
Don't criticize someone for doing something that your guy is doing worse, and you're happy about.

This.
Remember the good old days when record deficits were an outrage, holding detainees indefinitely was un-American, two wars were an unnecessary burden, and taxing employees' health care benefits were bad?

Holy Shit you're right! Who do you recommend I vote for that embodies those ideals?
(And when were "the good old days"? the Ford administration?)

No, the good old days were just last year. Back then the certain elements of leadership (and I use that term loosely) & the public were actually bothered by those things I listed. So bothered, in fact, that they decided to give the Democratic nomination to a gimmick that pumped out neat speeches.
As for voting recommendations, I could care less who you vote for. It's just find it annoying to see people praise Obama for doing the same things that Bush did, and that they spent 8 years bashing him for.
