Opie is not afraid of the vacuum, he just hates the noise. His mother used to vacuum everyday and slammed the vacuum into the furniture and walls. She would slammed the vacuum into the kid's feet and legs if they didn't move fast enough. Opie said it was annoying and ever since he has hated the noise made by the vacuum.

I think it dates back to when he was a small child and his mom thought it was funny to chase him all around the house with the friggin vacume. Then he got his feet cought in the thing and scared him half to death.
