I think it is very possible for him to survive for 9 minutes underwater but his physical condition could prove to be too much for him.

All they are going to do is pump 100% oxygen to him right before he holds it...
Normal air only has ~21% oxygen in it, and when you breathe you dont even get close to using all 21% with each breathe. So if you get 2 lung fulls of 100% you'll be able hold it for a long time...
