Default UFC 69 "Shootout" *SPOILERS INSIDE*

I couldnt find a watching thread for the PPV, so here tis.

I am posting this at 9:40 p.m. and under the spoiler tag are the results up till now. I will try to update them periodically, if I can. The results so far are from sherdog.com

Spoiler

Topics (which I'm sure have been covered in the UFC sticky thread)

1. Does Serra stand a chance?
2. Is Diego going to have his first UFC loss?
3. Will we see the "Swick-atine"?
4. Will Big Brad the Giant fall?

----

My answer to my own questions (yes, I need help)

1. No, because even with a takedown, GSP, will make an athletic move to get right back to his feet. Would I like to see it, sure, underdog wins are always fun. Wont happen.
2. No, thats only form the heart, cause Diego is one of my favorite fighters right now.
3. I hope so!
4. Havent seen him for a while, so its up in the air for me. cointoss.

----

Up to date : LIVE RESULTS

Yushin Okami vs. Mike Swick next.

I really like Swick as a fighter and as a personality.
I hope he dominates Okami.

Swick is getting a standin o. He is big in his home town.

----
1st round

good kicks exchanged, feelling out eachother mostly.
flying knee blocked by Okami.
Okami got the takedown.
Mikes strugling for guard while taking glancing blows to the head and side.
Okami is trying for a kamura
Mikes fighting hard.

First rounds over.
Okami probably won that because of the takedown and control.

----
2nd round

Swick missed a spinning back kick.
feeling each other out again.
takedown attempt by Okami blocked by Swick.
Okami got the takedown.
fight for guard and Swick blocking all blows.
stood up by Mario.
Swick got a good left in.
Stumbled Okami, but quickly recovered.
Okami got another takedown.
standup again by Mario.
Swick teeing off, Okami rocked.
and the round is over. he has the momentum and a standing o.

----
3rd round

feeling out again.
Rogan makes a good point about Okami not swinging his left.
a onehanded fighter.
still feeling out.
Okami taking deep breaths, Swick lands and trys to combo.
caught him with a right.
Okami countered and got the takedown.
Okami has the mount now.
not good for Swick.
Okami has his back.
hes lkanding blows,
Mario is about to stop it...
Swick reversal.!!!
Okami rubber guard.
TIME IS UP!
what a great fight!
they both left it all out there.

----

Yushin Okami by unanimous decison.

Big Nog to the UFC= Pride is dead

those who dont go to the UFC will go to other orgs. who becomes the number 2 org is the question. k1 heroes probably has the best shot, and pride will have to be rebuilt from the ground up. maybe Im jumping the gun, but it looks like dana white is gona gut pride of the big names.

Josh Koscheck vs. Diego Sanchez
Round 1

a couple of punches and a striaght kick or two.
then a shoot at the end of the round by Kos and a reversal by D

----

Round 2

not a whole lot again
no good follow ups
a few good punches landed by Kos
and a few good flurries by D
no follow ups tho.

----

Round 3

BIG boos from the crowd...

that fight stank.

only a head game fight.
that was all Kos.
this better be unanimous

...

and it was. 30-27

----

Diego didn't bring it, but neither did Josh.
Kos was only concerned about the "W"
not about a good fight. Kos couldda put his all out.
It was a "W", thats all.

Matt Serra vs. Georges St. Pierre

Round 1

Serra with some good leg kicks
and a puch flurry or two
moving and feeling e/o out
Serra connected!!!!
GSP is rocked
GSP IS DONE

MATT SERRA WON!!!!!

GSP is out.

(I'm callin a fix!)

----
GSP looked sloppy after a slip and a sharp shot, not a bomb
but after he was down, Serra hit him hard with a couple.

(sherdogs account (much better wording than mine))
Round 1
Serra lands a straight right to the body. Serra lands another body shot. Serra looks very comfortable with his striking. St. Pierre is throwing one strike at a time thus far. Serra rocks St. Pierre with a right hook and another punch. He pounces and mounts St. Pierre then pounds away until John McCarthy halts the bout. Matt Serra becomes the new welterweight champion at 3:25 of the first round.

Mmmmmm... those words taste good. Can I get a side of mustard to go with that foot?

I am glad Serra won.
Still callin Bravo Sierra.
GSP is not that sloppy, ever.
I like Serra's attitude and confidence.
That still didn't look like any GSP approach to a fight that I've ever seen.

Oh, well. Its done.

Still got to see an amazing fight in Leonard Garcia vs. Roger Huerta.
Those guys left it all out there. (other than the size) It looked like two Forrest Griffens out there swingin' ... all heart and no stop.

Nice to see Kendall Grove make some great ground moves.
That was a good display of his talent, watch out for him.

Why? why would they fix it? just a question, thought you might want to elaborate.

Actually saw the highlights on ESPN's SportsCenter. ....no joke. Sierra caught him with a good right and stunned GSP, then finished him. I still can't believe he won but good for Matt, I liked him during TUF 4, he was always coaching and helping the guys on his team.

That was my immediate reaction upon seeing it.
Without thought or any insight. I saw how quickly it happened and couldn't believe it. Upon further thought, I don't want to beleive it was a fix and after watching it a couple a more times, I dont think it was.

That was my gut reaction, right when it happened.

I gained a lot of respect for Serra after TUF too. Great attitude and personality.

Nobody had Serra. A lot of us were pulling for him, though. Talk about taking advantage of an opportunity put in front of you.

Here’s how Thomas Gerbasi at UFC.com described the fight:

Odds mean nothing. The past means nothing. In mixed martial arts, what matters is what happens when the bell rings. And when the bell rang at the Toyota Center tonight, Matt Serra came to fight. When you do that, good things can happen, and they did for the Long Island native, who stunned the mixed martial arts world with a first round TKO win over Georges St-Pierre to win the UFC Welterweight Championship in the UFC 69 main event tonight.

Serra had earned his title shot by winning season four of The Ultimate Fighter reality show. St-Pierre, in his first fight since taking the 170-pound title from Matt Hughes last November, was expected to roll over his challenger en route to bigger and better things.

It was not to be.

A smiling and relaxed Serra (16-4) showed no fear of the champion as he met him in the middle of the Octagon to start the bout, but St-Pierre was sharp as he shot out kicks and the occasional quick flurry. The challenger responded with kicks of his own to the champion’s legs, but St-Pierre (13-2) appeared to be too fast for his foe, apparently just biding his time until he decided to pounce.

But that’s why they fight the fights, and just as soon as those words were written, Serra threw a looping right hand that grazed the back of St-Pierre’s head, forcing him to lose his balance and stumble twice. It was all the underrated Serra needed, as he swung for the fences and landed on the still recovering champion, who got into deeper and deeper trouble with each shot the New Yorker landed.

Suddenly, St-Pierre was on the mat, and Serra followed him, never letting his hands stop moving until referee John McCarthy pulled him off at the 3:25 mark and declared him the new welterweight champion of the world.

“Tonight I got beat by a better fighter than myself,” said the always gracious St-Pierre. “He beat me fair and square. I’m very sad right now, but I will come back.”

Undoubtedly. But for now, there’s a new boss at 170 pounds

Quote:
Diego vs. Kos was 15 minutes of fucking horseshit fighting. That fight goes up there with Arlovski vs. Sylvia 3 and Liddel vs. Horn 2, and Griffin vs. Bonar 2. Im so dissapointed in Sanchez, he had to know that he was loosing the fight and didn't to shit to try and win it. Just another case of a fighter who gets more concerned about a winning record then winning a fight.

I guess weed doesn’t cure all.

Quote:
I knew Okami was good, but i really underrated him. He dominated Rory Singer and Kalib Sterns two TUF vets who i didn't really had to much skill. At the end of the first during the ring break, you heard Mike Swick say to his corner he was too strong. Despite a flurry of punches to end the second round, Mike just got mentally and physically controlled the entire fight. Really bummed about this fight, Swick was a fun fighter to watch and I was pulling for him.

I knew very little about Okami before this fight. I’m a bit surprised to see Swick get beaten by that – but hey –that’s mma. Anyone can get beaten (and eventually does).

Quote:
Kendall Grove looked sick..... against a can. Kudos to UFC matchmakers for padding another posterboy. Lol, despite that Da Spyra is FUN to watch.

Yeah, he needs to be given some more challenging fights already.

Quote:
Heath Herring returned to his winning ways, Pete Sell managed to find a way to get out punched by a submission fighter

Gotta say – as much as I like Sell – I beginning to think he’s not all that smart. He keeps losing fights he should win.

Quote:
a newer slimer Josh Haynes got knocked the fuck out by Luke Cummo.

Hell yeah. Go Luke Cummo!

Heres’ the UFC.com description of that fight:

New Yorker Luke Cummo got the night off to a rousing start with a second round stoppage of Josh Haynes in a welterweight bout.

A fast pace was set early, with Cummo (8-4) the more accurate puncher while Haynes’ shots were heavier. The New Yorker did land the most telling blow of the round though, getting his foe’s attention with a thudding left hook with under two minutes to go.

The pattern continued in the second, with Cummo potshotting with both hands, and eventually, he hit paydirt with a picture-perfect right hand that put Haynes (9-7) on the canvas. Haynes crawled forward on the mat, trying to clear his head, but it was too late, as referee Kerry Hatley stepped in to halt the bout at the 2:45 mark

Quote:
Rumors on the messageboards are that Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz got into a incident at some point during the PPV, and were seperated by security.

Ha! I would love to see some footage of that.

Quote:
A crazy week of MMA, to wrap it all up. Apparently the Tito Dana White boxing match is back on after Tito pulling out becasue he wasnt going to get paid for it. They announced the fight will be on Spike April 12th.

Yeah, saw that announced during the premier episode of TUF. Ha, ha. Its always comes down to the money, doesn’t it? I’m very curious to see what kind of fight Dana White has in him.

Happy Easter!

Nope...Not after the way GSP dominated Matt Hughes. This is why I love MMA and the UFC. A fighter can beat any fighter on any given day. Last night was Serra's day.

Alan Belcher is not a can. He is a talented up coming youngster with good ability and solid size(6'2 185). Grove did look good yesterday.... but I feel he would get DESTROYED by a wrestler or a BJJ blackbelt. He has alot of talent but i see MANY holes in his game.

fantastic fight. i have probably watched that serra/gsp fight 15 times on my dvr. it was pretty much unbelievable.

congrats to serra, i dont think it could have happened to a better guy. but i think that this belt is going to be a rotating belt. no one is really going to hold onto it for a year+ like hughes did.
