UFC cuts Kalib Starnes
UFC cuts Starnes after disgraceful performance
By Kevin Iole
It was a great night for mixed martial arts on Saturday in Montreal, as an enthusiastic sellout crowd of 21,390 packed the Bell Centre to watch hometown hero Georges St. Pierre reclaim the UFC welterweight title from Matt Serra at UFC 83.
It wasn't such a good night, though, for Kalib Starnes, who spent most of the evening running from Nate Quarry in their middleweight bout. A native of Surrey, B.C., Starnes was booed heavily by the Canadian crowd that had been boisterous in its support of all the other Canadians on the card.
After losing a unanimous decision on scores of 30-26, 30-27, and an unheard-of 30-24, Starnes received even worse news: He was cut from his contract by UFC president Dana White.
"He just doesn’t belong in the UFC and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work," White said Monday.
Quarry pressed the action the entire fight as Starnes simply circled and refused to engage. Late in the third round, Quarry pretended to run like he was a track star in trying to find a way to get Starnes to fight.
After the bout, members of Quarry's corner were complaining to Starnes about his lack of activity. Starnes shouted an expletive at one member of Quarry's team, called him a derogatory term for homosexuals and challenged him to a fight.
Starnes couldn't be reached for comment about his performance, but Quarry expressed disappointment with Starnes' lack of effort.
A one-time contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, Starnes was 8-2 going into the bout and had had quality victories over Chris Leben and Jason MacDonald.
"I think if you're fighting in the UFC, you've got to come to fight," Quarry told UFC.com in a post-fight interview. "I would much rather get knocked out than lose a decision running backwards. No disrespect to Kalib. I know the stress really gets to you. A lot of guys, they focus on not wanting to lose instead of wanting to win. I didn't mean to disrespect him in any way. I just got frustrated because you can't fight when somebody's moving backward that fast."

I am very curious what the hell happened there...
I want Kalib's reaction/rebuttal on video ASAP.
That ain't him, from what I've ever seen.

I'm not totally sure, but I think it had to do with the UFC not paying for some of his medical bills after his last fight. He has also mentioned in the past that he wasn't happy with fighters compensation.
Whatever the reason, he went about it the wrong way.

I will say this about that fight. I'm a fan of guys who act classy during the fight and dont showboat and such...that being said, I still loved the way Quarry handled himself, god damn funny.

Was that the fight where the other guy (Quarry?) was putting his arm over his head with his other arm through the hole thus making fun of Kalib?
That was pretty funny seeing Quarry break into a jog.
Kalib isnt all that great anyway. He was scared, that's all.

Good, he absolutely doesn't deserve to be in the ufc at all. I believe at some point during the fight Goldberg said "Well, Quarry is certainly the aggressor in this fight" I yelled at my TV, "HE'S THE ONLY FIGHTER IN THE OCTOGON!"
Good riddance douchebag.

From Sherdog. Kalib's response.
Quote:
|
"“Right now, I have a broken foot [that] I sustained with the first kick I threw in the fight,” Starnes said. “My leg is purple and black from my knee up, I have a black eye, a sprained jaw, and he’s questioning my desire to fight? If that isn’t enough to satisfy him and the crowd, I can show them the medical report. I can barely walk. [Quarry] totally destroyed my thigh with those kicks. I’m sure a lot of people would rather see me suffer a traumatic brain injury and be rendered unconscious. That’s too bad. If that’s what they want, they’re paying the wrong guy $10,000 to get his brain smashed in. Dana White wouldn’t stand and trade with a guy [like Quarry] who had an 80 or 90 percent knockout ratio with injuries like I had Saturday night,” Starnes said. “He wouldn’t cross the street for $10,000. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’m not about to stand there and get smashed to pieces. After I knew my foot was broken, I was trying to back up and work off the jab and keep moving so I didn’t get knocked out.”"
|
If this guy thinks he will get more than 10k per fight from any other org after that fight he's insane. If he was unable to fight and did not want to risk injury it would have made a lot more sense to stop the fight than run away like a pussy for three rounds.

would you like to bet on that?
Vince already passed on entering mma. He was looking at buying Pride when it was for sale but for whatever reason it didnt happen. maybe someone else remembers the particulars. that would have been the move to make
but bring in Kalib Starnes, a semifinalist in a season of TUF? thats a hilarious idea

Starnes was awful, no question. But I dont like the pressure put on fighters to be exciting. I guess for a guy like Dana would rather have it be "ultimate fighting" and resemble a skilled street fight rather than a sport called mixed martial arts, it makes sense. But you cant force a sport to be exciting all the time. Im not interested in watching guys fight recklessly and wild for entertainment sake. that shit gets old imo

So he should have thrown in the towel. no harm no foul. if your injured have the doc stop it, don't answer the bell in the 2nd rd. no ones gonna fault a guy for getting injured. it's a contact sport it happens. imo he's trying to cop out on this one.

The whole standing up the fights I don't agree with, if a guy gets put on his back it should be up to him to get the fight standing again, not the Ref. regardless on if the top fighter improves his position, why can't they let a fighter just throw punches being in the other fighters guard. I think Joe Rogan said something about that a while back

I get where Dana's coming from. Boring fighters lead to less PPV money and less Tickets sold. The reason Arona and Barnett are not in the UFC. They're boring. I enjoy a good ground battle more then the next guy but like a lot of pride fights and some ufc fights you have 1 guy holding the other down. doing no damage and not trying to advance to side mount, mount, back , sub etc. he just holds him down and out points him. Boring and I agree with the stand ups. He doesn't want glorified street fights or you'd see kimbo and james thomson in the UFC.

They need to craft a set of rules that conform more to what they want to see.

in the past year I fell like a lot of the B level fighters have been fighting wild and reckless because thats whats called for now. which is great as a spectacle but not a sport. real, skill based competition is going to be boring at times. any attempt to change that takes away from it. but thats just how i feel.
yeah arona is boring. Barnett isnt, and hes not in the UFC because Dana has a personal problem with him. shocking.

Jebus christ you fucks need to cool out just throwing out some speculation...I mean the guy isn't going to get MMA fights after that display so is pro-wrestling really that far out of the realm of possibility?
I never said anything about Vince getting into MMA I said sign this guy who is getting national press for bascially giving the finger to Dana White...you think McMahon is above that? I mean this is the guy who promoted a match between the Huckster and that Nacho Man with Billionaire Ted and last night had Hillary vs Obama in the ring. God forbid someone throw something out there.
