UFC 89 on Spike?
UFC and Spike TV close to deal for UFC 89; title fight could be added
The UFC and Spike TV are close to finalizing a deal that would put October's UFC 89 event on free basic cable -- a week before the recently announced UFC 90 event that will likely air on pay per view.
A source close to the event tells MMAjunkie.com ( www.mmajunkie.com) that the UFC 89 announcement is expected soon.
However, when reached for comment today, Spike TV Vice President of Communications David Schwarz had no comment.
UFC 89 takes place Oct. 18 at The NIA in Birmingham, England. The main event features "The Ultimate Fighter 3" winner and popular British fighter Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben. Also slated to compete are Lyoto Machida, Thiago Silva, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Shane Carwin and Marcus Davis.
However, a major addition to the card has been discussed.
After this past weekend's UFC Fight Night 14 event in Las Vegas, UFC President Dana White said that UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who defeated James Irvin in the event's headline bout, will likely next fight Patrick Cote. (Yushin Okami had been next in line for the title shot, but he recently suffered a broken hand while training.)
White said that if Silva fights in September at UFC 88, that it would likely be against Cote.
However, one source close to the fighter tells MMAjunkie.com that Silva, largely considered the world's top pound-for-pound fighter, could instead be added to the UFC 89 fight card in Birmingham to bolster the nationally televised line-up. (And UFC 88 would instead feature its originally scheduled pay-per-view main event of Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans.)
Before the deal is finalized for UFC 89, Spike TV and the UFC first need to agree to a fee for the broadcast. The addition of a marketable star such as Silva, whose fight with Irvin peaked with a hefty 3.8 million viewers this past Saturday, would surely make the event more attractive to Spike TV and potential advertisers.
If Silva is moved to UFC 89, it's not known if Cote would still be his opponent.
Again, though, the possible UFC 89 title fight is far from finalized and has merely been discussed as a possibility.

On Monday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship officially announced that UFC 89, taking place in Birmingham, England would, as previously rumored, be shown for free on Spike TV on a same-day tape delay. The event will broadcast in the United States at 9pm EST/PST.
The promotion also confirmed that former heavyweight fighter, Brandon Vera, will have a prolonged stay at 205lbs as he is set to face off against former “Ultimate Fighter” season 2 cast member, Keith Jardine at UFC 89.
Vera made his debut at 205lbs on July 19 where he pulled out a unanimous, albeit lackluster, win over UFC newcomer, Reese Andy. Jardine will return for the first time since May when he suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Wanderlei Silva.
The main event for the England show will be popular countryman Michael Bisping taking on the very heavy handed, Chris Leben. Also on the card will be two more light heavyweight tilts as Thiago Silva takes on another undefeated phenom in Lyoto Machida, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou squares off against Luis Cane.
The card will also feature Chris Lytle as he faces Paul Taylor and Marcus Davis against Paul Kelly in welterweight action.
FIGHT CARD:
-Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben
-Lyoto Machida (#5 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Thiago Silva (#10 Light Heavyweight in the World)*
-Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (#7 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Luiz Cane
-Keith Jardine (#9 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Brandon Vera
-Akihiro Gono vs. Dan Hardy
-Marcus Davis vs. Paul Kelly
-Jess Liaudin vs. David Bielkheden
-Sammy Schiavo vs. Per Eklund
-Sam Stout vs. Terry Etim
-Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain
-Paul Taylor vs. Chris Lytle
-David Baron vs. TBA

So does the winner of Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva jump up to title contender?

I'm really not a big fan of him. I'm not saying he's not nasty and he is fun because he is unique but I just dont really like him. And running from Tito for three rounds didnt help. And I cant stand Tito.

I would think Shogun would like another shot at Forrest, and Lidell will probably get a shot before either of those two. But the winner of this fight has to be in serious consideration for a shot.

Thats what kind of annoys me about the UFC. IMO Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida, & Thiago Silva should be all in line for a title shot rather then Chuck or Shogun. I would have to assume that the winner of Chuck/Evans would get the next shot.

not really. A LOT of fighters just out point people. jab jab hold jab jab hold. it ruined boxing and i can't even watch it anymore. they need to start taking points for excessive clinching and maybe it will be interesting again. for every good fight there are 10 bad boring ones

did you see Vazquez Marquez 1,2, and 3? Katsidis Casameyor? Margarito Cotto this past weekend? If not, why would you think you know anything about it?

I was never a big K1 fan. Is K1 Max the one where its kickboxing for rounds one and three but full mma for the second round (or something like that)? I seen something like that a long time ago and dont know what it was exactly. I actually think Bob Sapp might have been in the fight I saw.

K1 Max is straight kickboxing. The fighters weight about 155. Not always very exciting but its extremely skilled stuff.

I'm not getting in this arguement AGAIN. I've said in the past and I'll say it again. not EVERY fight is terrible but Lennox Lewis style ruined boxing for me and a lot of people. To many guys try to out point guys and it's annoying. that's all i'm saying
