Default Silva vs Cote UFC 90

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote to headline UFC 90

The worst-kept secret of a title fight finally has a date; UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (22-4 MMA, 7-0 UFC) will next defend his title Oct. 25 against the resurgent Patrick Cote (13-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC).

The UFC 90 title fight was today reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, citing UFC President Dana White.

The fight takes place at Allstate Arena just outside Chicago and airs on pay per view.

The bout will be Silva's official return to the middleweight division; on July 19 he defeated James Irvin at UFC Fight Night 14 in a light-heavyweight non-title main event.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) previously reported, the Silva-Cote fight was briefly under consideration for UFC 89, an event that takes place Oct. 18 on Spike TV. Instead, though, it'll headline UFC 90, which given the rash of recent UFC events, had few options remaining for a headline bout.

Silva, arguably the world's top pound-for-pound fighter, pushed his win streak to eight straight -- including seven straight in the UFC -- with the victory over Irvin. It was his 10 straight win via stoppage.

Cote, meanwhile, began his UFC career with four consecutive victories, but since appearing on "The Ultimate Fighter 4," the 28-year-old has won four straight in the organization (with an additional win in the Canadian-based TKO promotion).

Cote most recently defeated submission specialist Ricardo Almeida via unanimous decision at UFC 86 to earn his title shot.

Thales Leites (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and Goran Reljic (8-0 MMA, 1-0) have agreed to meet in a middleweight bout at October's UFC 90 pay-per-view eveent.

A source close to Leites said bout agreements were recently signed and that fight is now official.

Leites was expected to fight in September at UFC Fight Night 15 but will instead return at UFC 90, which takes place Oct. 25 at Allstate Arena just outside Chicago.

Leites will go for his fith straight victory in the UFC since suffering a unanimous-decision loss to Martin Kampmann at his 2006 octagon debut. The 27-year-old Brazilian most recently scored a split-decision victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 85, though the win was aided by Marquardt's two costly point deductions.

Leites will now meet undefeated Crotian Reljic, who will drop to middleweight for the fight. The fighter, who competed throughout Eastern Europe before signing with the UFC, scored a second-round TKO of Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84. It was his eighth straight victory -- and the seventh to come via stoppage.
