oops, before I posted I just read the title of the thread and it said "Metal fans, What are you listening to?".

I didn't realize you were asking to list only 'new' metal bands.

In my opinion, 95% of all the "new" Metal Bands out there suck. Never again will there be bands out there at the same caliber as Old School Metallica (I refuse to accept anything after the black album), Megadeth, Pantera, and other such great bands that made metal.

never again. one band comes VERY close to that for me though..... Iced Earth.

along with Demons & Wizards (half iced earth, half blind guardian).
nevermore is a great band too, getting into them more and more.

Giving my vote also for Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, and Nevermore. But would also like to add Bronx Casket Company, 3 Inches of Blood, and be on the look out for Beyond Fear(Ripper Owens side band) due out in May.

Yeah, my bands are kinda old but thats why I asked for your new or sorta new metal bands. I want to see what you guys are listening to, and now you have an idea what Im listening to. I am just always looking for new stuff and will take your recommendations and maybe other people will get something out of this.

Oh yeah, when I said new metal I didnt mean Nu-metal but I am not ruling out that sub-genre either.

I agree it is hard to find any new metal these days so lets say the last 15 yrs or so-- ruling out hair band metal.

Lets keep this open with any and all suggestions. I just need some good shit to listen to.

I am definitely going to start by checking out Iced Earth though

I've always been a metal head, but rarely a band rocks my world enough to buy their CDs.

I'm usually stuck in my old school mode with:
Mercyful Fate (Melissa / Don't Break The Oath & any live versions but get them all if released to support the King)
King Diamond (I buy them all, but lost a little interest after "The Eye")
Coroner (the MOST underrated metal band ever. No longer a band, but seek out their stuff. You will not regret it.)
    Black Sabbath
    Metallica (lost me at Justice)
Megadeth (lost me after Rust in Peace after Mustaine quit drinking...)
    --------------------
But there's a few new bands that I'm really digging.

    Mastodon
    Dew-Scented (very heavy Slayer-esque)
Enochian Crescent (good luck finding any of this but truly awesome musically)

There's a few others that I would "Tune-Select" when XMLM was on the sats.

    shadows fall
    slipknot (nu metal)
    candiria
snot (not sure if they even count as a "metal" band, plus the lead singer died like 7 yrs ago)
Hed P.E. (not sure if they count as "metal" either, but they are fucking hardcore)
and of course Korn ( they ARE fucking metal, fuck all of you who say otherwise)

You definately must find some Coroner. As I mentioned in my previous post, they are disbanded, and I haven't been able to find them in the stores, but definately out there in the MP3 world

    CDs / LPs

    Death Cult (demo)
    R.I.P.
    Punishment for Decadence
    Mental Vortex
    No More Color
    Grin

And though many can't stand the vocals, you can't loose with some good ole' Mercyful Fate (especially Don't Break the Oath or anything before that. Musically some of the best dual guitars out there)

Just to name a few with recent albums:

    Mudvayne
    Slipknot
    In Flames
    Iced Earth
Exodus (new album - Shovel Headed Kill Machine is brutal, first album with Rob on vocals)
Bruce Dickinson - His solo albums are what Maiden should have been.
Lacuna Coil - a change of pace
    Cradle of Filth
Fozzy - Chris Jericho nails the old-school style
    Killswitch Engage
Avenged Sevenfold - working that two-guitar harmony ala Maiden
    Shadows Fall
    Amorphis

Seven Witches - Aside from Jack Frost (Savatage) on guitars, lineup has changed with every album. Prior to new album, James Rivera (Helstar, Flotsam & Jetsam) was on vocals. Joey Vera plays base on 'Passage to Other Side' album. Alan Tecchio (Hades, Watchtower, Non Fiction) is singing on new album.

Lately I have been listening to Rumplestiltskin Grinder. Good stuff if you like older thrash sound. I really like the newest Kreator (Enemy of God). Crotchduster (Big Fat Box of Shit), pretty goofy stuff. The new Nile isn't so bad either. High on Fire (Blessed Black Wings).

I have been bored with a lot of the newer stuff lately. I have been listening to a lot of Carcass, Immolation, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Death lately. Bands such as Testament, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Iced Earth, Nevermore, Death Angel, and older Megadeth get listened to on a weekly basis.

I am 30, and have listened to nothing but metal since I can remember hearing sound. I used to be pretty big into the metal scene, but now I'm not to involved anymore, but I still keep up with the current happenings, and still only listen to metal.

Oh, also a newer band called Angel Blake. A couple of ex members of The Crown. I have only heard a couple of demos, but I really like what I have heard.

I think it's safe to say that at any time, not just now, there is a lot of crap out there. But I think we are just more aware of what is out there then ever before because of the internet and computers. Instead of relying on a label to produce, package and distrubute, cheap recording, file-sharing and the web has made it easier to get your band heard. Yeah, we used to trade tapes and so forth, but it still took one person in your town to somehow get a hold of an album or plunk down their money based on the cover art, and then if it was good, pass it along. Metallica built their career this way.

But we're over here now. We read posts on a message board that says "check this band out", and head off to Limewire, iTunes, etc. to hear for ourself. And since we can at least sample the band for free, we hear a lot more clunkers then we would if we had to put down our $16 first.

All told though, the sheer volume of material avaible means that you find a lot more stuff that you like than you ever would have before.

I agree with what you said and that is why I wanted to create this thread. I used to be able to troll the internet(myspace, itunes) and randomly look for new bands under metal searches etc...but now I find it impossible to sort through the crap because a lot of new shitty bands have saturated the genre.
And it seems that anything slightly heavy is deemed metal. Word of mouth is the only way now for me. 70% of what you guys have mentioned I either already own or at least heard of and maybe forgot about but now will check out.

Keep the suggestions coming b/c you guys have given me a lot of great recommendations and last night alone downloaded 60 new songs from the suggestions you made.

I know exactly what your saying, basically there is more of an available volume of music out there, and most of these bands suck, so the suck percentage is alot higher.
What I have noticed is, these bands, alot of them have no problem hitting the instrumentals, but they are very week when it comes to vocals. For some reason all these new bands out there, no matter what they want to deem themselves, all sing out of their fucken nose. I dont know why, but that is the thing now in music, sing as nasaly as possible, and i fucken hate that.
