I get why the UFC wants to lower the bar for people to buy PPVs, but a 4% tax (let's face it: all of our cable/satellite bills get a buttload of taxes and fees put on them to the point where most won't notice the $3 tax on a $60 PPV) to fund the commission in Oklahoma kind of makes sense.

Fuck the UFC. Stop charging as much as a year's subscription to Netflix for every event and then complain about a 4% tax. This isn't about the fans. This is about their corporate overhead.

I'm generally on the UFC's side on these things, but I have to agree. This is how Oklahoma funds their athletic commission and it's how I'd like every semi-government organization to fund itself: a small tax on the people who are specifically consuming this particular service.

I have to assume this is part of a general effort by the UFC to cut PPV taxes, but in this case it's just a dumb move.

UFC's doing a lot of stupid shit lately. This isn't how you continue to build a product.

I don't normally quote from the bible, but: "Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall." They are starting to think that they are too big to fail. I'm not sure that's correct, especially when they are spreading themselves thinner and thinner.

And you know that even if taxes like this are dropped, UFC isn't going to lower the price of the PPVs

    I'm with UFC on this
Why should a PPV that has zero to do with OK be taxed for that commission
If UFC does a live event there, they pay whatever bec that states commision is INVOLVED
    A PPV airing is different

You mean, besides Oklahoma State being a powerhouse wrestling program that has produced, among others, Randy Couture?

Isn't that regulated by the NCAA and not the state athletic commission.

And Randy is a cheater, so fuck him and his college

    Agree.

They're basically penalizing the UFC because no other MMA organization has PPV events. It sounds more like OK is trying to get some of that ZUFFA money.

Ok, let me spell it out for you in really little words:

College wrestling programs are factories for the vast majority of the best American MMA fighters. Oklahoma State, because of its excellent wrestling program, is at worst second to Arizona State in producing MMA fighters.

Your question was "who cares about Oklahoma?" My answer pointed anyone with a functioning brain to the answer: the UFC, since they get a lot of good fighters out of Oklahoma.

Every state fighting commission funds itself different ways. Some fund themselves through fees for fights. Some fund themselves through public funding (ie- a portion of the state's tax revenue goes to them). And Oklahoma funds itself by charging $3 to everyone who buys a fighting PPV. Mind you, Oklahoma's fight commission is NOT an MMA commission- it is a FIGHT commission. Wyoming is the only state that has an MMA-only commission. By that token, I believe Oklahoma charges that same 4% tax on boxing PPVs as well, which also funds their activities.

So no, this isn't a pick-on-the-UFC tax. In reality, given that there are probably more MMA fights overseen by the OK fight commission (that's purely a guess, but what the hell), this is probably more of a tax-boxing-fans-and-make-them-pay-for-a-commission-that's-more-of-an-MMA-commission-than-it-is-a-boxing-commission situation. Which is a win for MMA, and therefore a win for the UFC.

They have no right to tax anything they are not the governing commission for
Of course its a pick on UFC thing - they do 16PPVs a year & the article admits they are the $$$ generator for OK without putting a single card on there
ITS BS & OK needs a different biz model for their commission
Why should a consumer that pays for a UFC PPV in OK pay more so some scrub league can be sanctioned?
UFC is doing right by their fans

Are you dense or just being an asshole.

My question of "Who gives a fuck about Oklahoma" is OBVIOUSLY in regards to the situation being discussed, which you OBVIOUSLY understand since you didn't mention natural gas or oil in your answer and tried to answer with something that somewhat ties in with the subject.

That situation is the OK AC.

You shoot back with some shit about college wrestling, so I ask you AGAIN is that something that they even regulate, or is the college wrestling program regulated by the NCAA.

I'm honestly not TRYING to be an asshole (that happens naturally) it is an honest question. If the commission DOES regulate college wrestling then your point MIGHT be valid, if they DON'T regulate it, then your point is as stupid as Mills's opinions on Fedor and Kirk's on Aspartame.

    1. Lets say the UFC and the OKAC can't come up with a deal. What's stopping the UFC from doing Fight Night type of events to avoid the 4% PPV tax? Or is the 4% tax for ordering a PPV?

    2. If that's the case, the UFC can charge 4% more to Oklahoma residents. That would suck though.

    3. Oklahoma has a lot of casinos that operate under a different commission, so if you're a wrestler going to OSU, OU, etc and want to pursue MMA, you still have promotions (like KOTC) that will give you the opportunity to fight and get your name out there.

This backs up my point that UFC was funding the whole system without even doing an event there

    That is BS

It wasn't even really TO the UFC.. It was to the residents of their state.

I think California is trying to do the same thing now too... Wonder if they will reconsider....
