Our mayor really wants to save us from ourselves....

NYC Board of Health approves ban on sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces

Ban will apply in fast-food joints, movie houses, Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias and most other places selling prepared food

BY TINA MOORE / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

The size of your soda just shrank.

The city Board of Health voted Thursday to ban super-sized sugary drinks at restaurants and concession stands.

Unless blocked by a judge, the ban will go into effect in six months.

Sugary beverages will now be limited to 16 ounces after the board voted 8-0, with one abstention, to approve Mayor Bloomberg’s signature proposal.

The controversial plan, which is meant to curb obesity, came under withering criticism from the beverage industry and some civil liberties groups.

The restriction applies only to establishments that receive letter grades from the Health Department. That means certain outlets, including 7-Eleven and its Big Gulp, are exempt.

There was little doubt that the Board of Health, whose members were appointed by Bloomberg, would stand in the way of the mayor’s plan. One member, Sixto Caro, opted to abstain from voting.

It is the latest in the Bloomberg administration’s wide-ranging plan to make the city healthier. Previous initiatives include a ban on public smoking and the posting of calorie counts in restaurants.

I wonder how stupid he'll feel when people buy 2 16-ounce drinks instead of 1 20-ounce drink.
The mayor suggested that. He also suggested that retailers charge more for drinks if they're worried about losing money.

That's how billionaires think.

I don't think they have prepared food in 7/11. I'm not sure those pre-wrapped sandwiches in the fridge count. There aren't any 7/11s with real deli counters.

Gonna get all KIRKCHEMTRAILZ1111 but doesn't this just seem like a test measure to see just how much of the State's cock the citizens will take in their sheep colons? Looks like the answer is balls deep if they are willing to let people tell them how big their fuckin' soda can is going to be and they don't do anything about that level of psychotic micromanaging and state control.

This is the natural following of the ban of smoking in public establishments. Just a little bit at a time, then they really got you owned.

Haven't been in one in years... but don't they have those hot dog roller things? Plus the beverage dispensers... those things can get pretty gross if they aren't cleaned/maintained.

The monthly rent for a Bloomberg terminal is $1500. There's 350K of those around the world.

That's a spicy meatball...

Wait, he actually suggested buying 2 drinks? Doesn't that contradict his agenda of reducing how much soda people drink? Thank God I don't live in NYC. I don't understand why people keep voting for him.

Well, the last election, the one he "bought" by changing the rules regarding term limits (changing them without it going to a public vote), he barely won. He thought he was going to waltz right in, and found out almost half the city hated him. So the past 3 years he's turned this city into his own personal playground/SimCity.

The first step is the red light cameras. If a population will sit there like "They will keep us safe." while they install those fucking things... then the nanny politicians know they're dealing with a flock of compliant and docile sheep, and then it's bend them over and there is no limit to what they'll take in their asses.

And oh did they ever stuff the NYers asses full of those red light cameras...

I'm against Mrs Bloomberg's ban but I say fuck all these fatties.

Q) Seriously, who needs to gulp more than 16oz of sugary awfulness at one sitting

A) Fatties, that's who.

Suffolk County has been aggressively putting up those things in 'major' intersections. Every time the flash goes off they've nailed another sucker.

I love me some XL sodas and I'm 6'4", 140 lbs. (135 lbs. if I take an especially large dump). I may be speeding towards diabetes, but I'm not fat. If I can't get a nice big drink the next time I see a concert at MSG or go to a Yankees game, then what the hell am I supposed to pee in on the car ride home? A puny 16-ounce cup will overflow and make a mess, sir!

You are one tall, skinny mothefucker if I do say so myself.

Yeah, I'm no fatso either (5'9", 160), but a 20oz fountain coke goes great with 2 slices.

Don't forget it's been proven they shorten the yellow lights, prolly increasing accidents, but generating revenue. You can be fat if you want, it's not up to the state to say shit about legal products. They really don't have anything better to do than devote resources to such a fucking non-issue?
